To-gather Cafe - Bedok Smile Feb 01, 2015

To-gather Cafe

I was around the vicinity during the last public holiday, since bedok is famous for the bak chor mee hence i decide to eat it again. Due to the long queue, I u-turn back and drop here to try on this cafe. The cafe is packed and there is a waiting list, hence i left my contact number and went for a stroll nearby.

When i was shown to my seat, the cafe is still full. You will have to make your order at the counter and pay your bill right after ordering. Nets and Credit card payment are available

Different cakes for selection. Chocolate lava cake is their best seller while the matcha lava cake is limited quantity

Caller, but it is actually table number. Guess they will use it when they are short handed

Simple menu

Mocha ($4.50) - Lots and lots of foam on the top of the mocha. I wont say this is one of the best i had but still ok, only that i dislike the too generous amount of foam that was on the top.

Seafood Aglio Olio ($8.90) - I am bewildered by the amount of seafood that was served with the spaghetti. There are squid, salmon and prawns in this dish. Abit spicy but still delicious. I really recommended this dish if you drop by.

Grilled Pandan Chicken ($8.90) - Unique pandan flavour, i can only savour this taste at the bottom of the grilled chicken, guess it was the sauce that give this pandan taste. Overall, still taste not bad.

Matcha Lava Cake with Ice Cream ($6.90) - The cake is soft and mist, matcha flow out once you cut the cake. Vanilla ice cream taste good when you eat the the matcha cake. Recommended to try. But if this is not available, you can try their best seller which is the chocolate lava cake.

Can you see the matcha flowing out at the middle section of the cake?? Yummy

Verdict: 4/5

Price: $8.9 onwards

I like this place very much. Cheap food with good service, only negative area is that the seats are limited. Beside this, they also provide reservation service, you can leave you contact number and they will call you once the seats are available.

I love the matcha lava cake. This dessert is newly launched i guess as the quantity are limited. The other best seller is the chocolate lava cake. You can try it too. The ice cream taste good and should eat with the warm cake together to give you a warm and cold sensation.

The other most worth waiting dish is the seafood Aglio Olio. Alots of ingredients are added in with such a cheap price. Waiting time for this dish is a bit long, but i guess it is really worth it.

Along the stretch of shophouses near Haji Lane, there is this nostalgic old style coffeeshop selling Foo Chow delights for many years. Of course, one of the highlight is the Foo Chow fishballs which many of us are familiar with. All the Foo Chow fishballs and dumplings here are handmade from fish paste, which is a very uncommon practice to find in Singapore.

On the menu: Red wine chicken soup, Foo Chow fishballs and dumplings noodles, yam abacus and fried rice cake.

Red Wine Chicken Mee Sua ($5.00) - I totally enjoyed this bowl of red wine chicken soup. Soup was just nice, neither too thick nor oily. Flavouring was acceptable, not as heavy as its reddish appearance. Broth was lightly absorbed by the mee sua which makes it a perfect combination to eat with. Chicken meat was tender as well. However, raddish was undercook.

Foo Chow Combination ($5.00) - A bowl of combination ingredients which includes foo chow fishballs, pork dumplings and fish dumplings. Fishball is irregular in shape and totally not bouncy like the usual machine-made fishballs. However the portion of fishpaste is little, thus makes the fishball taste slightly starchy instead of bouncy. Dumplings were good, thinly wrapped with minced pork and fish. Mee pok noodles were tossed in braised black soya sauce (lor chap) which makes the springy noodles very flavoured.

Well marinated minced pork within a foochow fishball

Verdict: 3.5/5

Rather than usual brunch along the Haji lane area, do come for a filling bowl of authentic foochow fishball noodle for a change.

Dining table with chequered table top. This is not for decoration only, its the clever idea of the owner for customers to have a match of checkers or other old school games while waiting for food. This is to make their customers avoid using the handphone all the time. Sit back and enjoy a game or 2, laugh it out instead of looking at your handphone all day. Have a game, loser pay for the bill!! Hahahaha
Rootbeer with vanilla ice cream

BBQ and garlic chilli winglets available too.

The weirdest ingredients you would find in your pizza - ikan bilis, otah and cucumber. Thick chunk of otah, generous toppings of cheese together with thin and crispy crust makes this local flavour pizza exceptionally outstanding. The spiciness is just right and adds on a punch to this savoury pizza. You would not stop with just one slice. Try eating your nasi lemak in pizza style!

This unique dessert definitely worth mentioning. Bottom layer of nutty pistachio biscuit base topped with light pistachio mousse. A perfect combination of smooth and crunchy texture hit the spot entirely. Overall not too sweet and the vanilla ice cream blends well with it too. Do not leave Potbellies without tasting this dessert.

Potbellies certainly serves awesome food for their patron's bellies. This themed restaurant at the heartland of Tiong Bahru is a good place to chill and have a good meal with your friends or family. Though prices are slightly steep, the food and service certainly worth its value. Plus, the serve is good, the staff will on and off ask you for your opinions or have a chat or 2, interesting engagement which i am amuse and at the same time enjoying. Both indoor and outdoor seats are available. Will come back again to try other exciting dishes on the menu.

Long Phung Vietnamese Restaurant Smile Jan 29, 2015

Categories : Vietnamese

(This photo is taken after 3pm when the queue had already subsided.. LOL)

An authentic Vietnamese Restaurant, Long Phung, located at Joo Chiat road serves quality food at affordable price. The restaurant is popular with locals and the foreigners as well. The queue is quite long when i reached there at 2pm and i had to wait 15mins to get a seat.

Their specialty is Pho Dac Biet - Sliced beef noodle which i had heard so many people talking about it

Restaurant is full even after 2pm. My goodness.......

Vietnamese Spring Roll (Small $7) - 4 spring rolls wrapped with vermicelli, vegetables, bean sprouts, sliced prawn and pork. The rolls are extremely fresh and crunchy. The vermicelli is used instead of turnip which we usually see from the chinese spring roll version. The softness of the vermicelli in this spring roll is wonderful. The vegetables and bean sprouts adds crunch to the spring roll and if you are a meat eater like me, there are prawn and pork slices wrapped together too.

Dipped into the sweet brown sauce with peanuts bits for extra flavors and crunch.

Chicken noodle soup ($6.50) - The clear broth is fantastic! It is tasty and not salty. Lots of garlic, onions and bones must have used to create this wonderful broth. The broth is not oily and with the Pho (kueh tiao noodle), it is simply delicious. Generous portion of vegetables and garnish. Really a comfort food!

Grilled Pork Vermicelli ($8.50) - Slightly more expensive dry noodle but it comes with fried spring roll and grilled pork chop. A bowl of slightly sweet syrup is given to add in the mixture for easy mixing. Lots of ingredients such as fried onions, peanuts, bean sprouts, cucumber and cabbage are added into the vermicelli as well. The dish itself taste superb. The syrup makes this dish slightly sweet which make it very appetizing and refreshing. The amazing part is the fried spring rolls and pork chop which are fresh, not oily and goes well with the other ingredients. Really a must try dish.

Verdict: 4 /5

Good food, fast service and affordable pricing. This is really a good place to visit if you have not do so. Try it, you may change your mind about Vietnamese cuisine. They are much more delicious than what you think.

A flagship of Teppi Japanese Restaurant, Hanare serves Chirashi Don as one of their main dish. Located near Orchid hotel, you can find Hanare at 3rd storey of a shophouse (beside Blue Ginger).

You can choose curry set

or Bara Chirashi Don set

Customer can choose to opt for a Buffet Set ($19.90), or their famed Bara Chirashi Set ($17.60) which is their mini buffet where you get a bowl of Chirashi Don with unlimited servings of 4 side dishes and miso soup. The Bara Chirashi Buffer Set ($29.90) entitle you the whole buffet side dishes. I would recommend Set B if you are a big eater.

Side dishes Buffet area

Cook your own noodle. The broth is thick and savory.

Fried prawn, fried saba, croquette and fried chicken chunks (left to right)

Fried salmon belly!!! The meat is thick and juicy, of cos the fats play a part in it!

Mini Buffet set consist of fried salmon pieces, salad, braised salmon, edamame etc etc

Miso soup at your own helping

Highlight of the day: Chirashi Don. Loads of fish given on a bowl of rice. The fish consist of salmon, tuna, clam and roe. All the ingredients are marinated and taste savory and fresh. Mix abit of wasabi to further enhance the taste.

You would be having warm rice with cold sashimi, such a wonderful combination.

Verdict: 4 /5

The prices is very affordable consider that it comes with the buffet and chirashi don. The food fare pretty good and i have no complaint on the chirashi don. However due to its small capacity, it is unable to cater for too many customers.
