On the 2nd day of CNY OK Feb 20, 2015

Yay!
Heavenly Wang is open on 2nd day of CNY…

1st day of CNY (Chinese New Year) is always a very happening day. With visits to the in-law in the first half of the day & my own parent's house later in the day…

2nd day is a relaxing day in our family. Finally had a good night's sleep since the 29th day of the previous year…as it was our traditional believe that no sleep on the last day of the Lunar Calendar in order to keep Longevity for the elders (守岁)…
So waking up late on 2nd day is nothing extraordinary…

We had the Mee Rebus Set ($6.80) & the Signature Toast Set ($4.90). The noodle is well cooked to al-dente but the sauce is a little thicker than usual. It's a pleasant surprise that the eggs were already cracked into the saucer. Hubby liked the coffee as it was thick & not too sweet. The toast were crunchy but as usual, we think it was too thin…

There was only 2 lady staff at the counter so the queue took a little longer to move. Used tableware also took a little longer to clear from the tables…
lol

Anyway, it's really nice to have a cup of hot, steaming Teh-O on a relaxing day with family…

It's a good chillaxing experience…
smile

It's been a long time since we last came here.
Today is a rainy day & we need piping hot soup to warm us up...
So we came here for dinner...before going for our weekly grocery shopping in that mega, air-conditioned supermarket.
There was no queue & we got seated rather quickly.
Decent space between tables

Decent space between tables

The pictures & decors on the walls & shelves above were very nostalgic.
Tables & seats were decently spaced apart.

Menu

The Menu had been upgraded but so is the prices... sad
The Soups used to be $4.50 onwards just a few months ago...now they're at least $6 onwards...
The soup bowl used to be almost double the rice bowl...now they're the same size...
sad
Piping Hot Peppery Soup

Piping Hot Peppery Soup

We didn't want a fat-laden meal so we didn't order the Pork Ribs Soup.
Then again, all varieties of meat were drowned in the same pot of hot peppery stock...

- the pieces of stomach were huge & long
- not as tender & soft as it used to be
- it took me a long time to chew

- tasted just nice, not too salty
- it's not soft but rather Q enough as a good bite

- soft but not fragrance enough to attract a second order

We liked the fact that there's no service charge.
We liked they kept their wet tissues priced at 20cents each.
We liked the efficient elderly service staff...they're friendly & warm.
We liked the hot peppery soup, especially on a rainy day...
In fact, we liked it so much that we'd asked to top up our soup 3 times!
Shiokalicious!

Tips:
Ignore the rest, just order the Pork Ribs Soup 排骨肉骨茶 ($7)...only the Pork Ribs Soup!
No, not even the Premium Loin Ribs Soup 特级龙骨肉骨茶 ($9.50) - not worth it...

Big Screen & Huge Ceiling Fans

Big Screen & Huge Ceiling Fans

K.Cook Korean BBQ Buffet restaurant has a very practical setting. The high ceiling enabled it to be equipped with a big screen & the huge commercial fans reminded me of those in the MRT stations.
The gangway was very narrow, there's only enough walking space for one person at any one time between the tables.
It is uncommon to see an establishment (in this upscale town area) spotting different tables & chairs. The whole look is chaotic & rather unsettling for me. Perhaps the owner has not decided on a fixed design or it's just that all the different furniture are just too comfortable to be left out.
lol
Flavorful

Flavorful

Anyway, we were very fortunate to be seated at a corner table next to the counters, in the air-conditioned area.
Very tempted to just hand over all the plates of food.
Better to weave through the congested walkway as hands-free as possible.

Hotplate & Small Drip Bowl

Hotplate & Small Drip Bowl

Each table was fitted with a very big BBQ Gas Hotplate & a small stainless steel drip bowl (for excess oil/charred pieces from the Hotplate).
There was hardly any space left for other dishes.
All the instruction on the Hotplate were in Korean, it's very unique.
Perhaps they're specially imported as we've not seen them in the market before.
smile
Beautiful Sujeo

Beautiful Sujeo

We proceeded to pick up the Sujeo at the self-service counters.
There were 2 baskets, 1 filled with the common stainless-steel Sujeo while the other is of copper (presumably, as they're slightly heavier).
I've also noticed that some were delicately engraved with flower designs, even on the mouth piece of the spoon.
I liked this detail.
smile
Fresh & Crunchy

Fresh & Crunchy

Although this is clearly a meat-eater's paradise, I'd expected it to have more than just the common local lettuce...to compliment the 10 types of meat served here.
Some similar restaurants in the Heartlands are already serving Romaine, Butterheads & Iceberg.
Quite Disappointing...
sad
Not oily & Delicious

The vegetable pancake is not crispy but was filled with veggies & not oily...
The Bulgogi Beef was flavorful & tender, very delicious...
Mildly spiced, chewy & filling

The big pieces of mildly spiced rice cake was chewy & cooked with generous pieces of fish cakes, quite filling...
Crunchy, refreshing & appetizing

Crunchy, refreshing & appetizing

We liked this Spring Onion Kimchi very much.
It's crunchy, refreshing & the sourness just opened up our appetite, salivating...
Thick, bland & unappetizing

Thick, bland & unappetizing

The pickled raddish is thick, bland & not crisp, very unappetizing...
Springy & gratifying

Springy & gratifying

I like to eat BBQ Seafood but they only serve 2 types of seafood, prawns & squid rings.
These squid rings were relatively large in size & tasted very springy.
Perhaps because they were always kept in containers filled with ice.
Very gratifying...
Well-seasoned, yummy!

Well-seasoned, yummy!

The 10 types of marinated raw meat were thick & needed a little longer to cook.
I liked to eat the Beef Bulgogi, Hot Sauce Chicken & Pork Belly very much.
The beef & chicken were well-seasoned while the Pork Belly was lean but not tough.
Very delectable...
smile

Everything had to be self-service here.
Wished they'd also let us clear our used dishes on our own as the staff were a little slow with collecting them.
Maybe they were short-handed because tonight was extremely crowded.
They were kept very busy with refilling the food stations & mopping up the water seepage from the Ice & Drink Station (next to our table).
The Soup pots were empty tonight.
Eventually, they'd stopped refilling the Seafood containers.

I barely had time to try the salad & fruit station.
In fact, our group was ready to leave when I was just about to get a drink.
shocked

Verdict: chopstick chopstick

It's considered quite reasonable to charge nearly $30 per person in an uptown joint like this.

Personally, I will not travel so far.

*** Did you know (source:wikipedia)***

Sujeo (수저) is the Korean word for the set of eating utensils commonly used to eat Korean scuisine. The word is a portmanteau of the words sutgarak (숟가락, "spoon") and jeotgarak (젓가락, "chopsticks").
{A common reference to the Korean Chopsticks & Spoon.}

Bulgogi (Korean pronunciation: [pulɡoɡi]; Korean: 불고기) is a Korean dish that usually consists of grilled marinated beef.

An Unusual Yum Cha Time... OK May 02, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Restaurant | Dim Sum | Seafood

Did you know...
"Fingers Kowtow" means fingers kowtowing (head bowing, metaphorically speaking...) -
Long time ago, there was an emperor who liked to go into the streets (bringing his royal subjects along) in plain clothes, to see how the commoners go about their daily life. Feeling thirsty & hungry, this group went into a tea-house. A service staff left the pot of tea near the emperor's seat. It was a common sight that whoever has access nearer to the teapot would serve tea. The emperor followed suit. All his royal subjects at the table were very surprised & some wanted to leave the seat to kowtow to him. He eyed them not to do so in order to keep his anonymity. Then one of them respectfully tapped twice on the table with two bend fingers & gave a slight nod of his head with eyes looking down (representing the bend knees on the ground & kowtowing). This gesture of appreciation had since passed down from then on...

When a Cantonese speaks of "Yum-cha" (饮茶 or also known as "Ban-ming" 品茗), it's commonly known as a Chinese style of enjoying morning/afternoon tea, which is a meal that involves drinking Chinese tea and eating dim sum dishes. "Yum-cha" means "drink tea" ("ban-ming" poetically meaning "tea appreciation").After shopping, we were wondering where to have our dinner. Then, we chanced upon this Yum Cha outlet near Changi City Point Mall.

It was rather late (less than an hour before closing time) but getting a table was still a challenge. We were lucky to get a table soon after we arrived. This place has high ceiling & the warm lighting was very inviting. The wooden chairs were rather unique (but it was very crowded so I didn't take any photo). Planks on the chairs were curved down towards the center, making one felt as though it was hugging our precious bottoms. Tableware were made of white-china (porcelain?) giving a clean & classy look while the acrylic condiment sets were easy to maintain & user friendly.

We were surprised when the service staff gave us a PDA for us to order our food. She was a little impatience but gave a very quick briefing nonetheless...when we told her that we had not been to any of their outlet before & this was our first time. It took us a while but we managed to order 3 Set Menu Specials - $11.80 nett per set (noodle/congee with 1 type of dim sum & a drink per set) & 2 extra dishes.

Look at the hot & flowy custard...

Look at the hot & flowy custard...

My humble opinion:
- both types of noodle were bland & a tad too al-dente...prawn wanton was springy...char siew was a little dry, not too charred & was a little too sweet for my liking...
- I would prefer the siew mai to be steamed a minute lesser as they were rather dry & a little tough...
- the skin of the crystal chives dumpling was thin on top (as in the picture) but was thick underneath, the chives looked as if they were mixed into the dough of the skin but were still slightly undercooked...
- the honey roasted char siew tasted the same as from the noodle counterpart but I'd expected it to be much tender & juicier though...this dish was saved by the steamed peanuts that was soft, juicy & very flavorful - nice...
- congee was flavorful & not too thick, pork was tender & the century egg was not mushy...it was tasty
- carrot cake was the most delicious of all...not oily, slightly crispy outside but soft inside, I liked the taste of the roasted meat (腊味) amidst tiny shreds of carrot...yummy!
- I was delighted to see the hot & flowy custard in the custard buns - not many restaurant managed to achieve this result...

To be fair, the overall experience was ok...but it was very expensive.

Verdict: chopstick chopstick

I might go back to try other dim sum dishes when they have a much better valued promotion.

A Cozy & Serene Place OK Apr 06, 2014
Categories : Bars/Lounges

We came here wanting to visit Miss U Cafe but only to find One Bistro Wine Bar at its location. It looked like a nice wine & dine place, so we went in. There were a few alfresco dining tables outside the main entrance. Inside was cool, cozy, calm & tranquil. Not many tables were occupied then but every customer seemed to be wearing a smile, looked contented & chatting away happily.
A cozy & serene place

The streams of beautiful crystals & lights at the glass-panel seats was sparkling like a page from a fairytale. It caught my attention & the service staff immediately led us to the sofa seats.

Once seated, the service staff brought us glasses of iced water & lightly introduced us to some items on the menu. I was pleasantly surprised when he then excused himself politely to allow us some privacy to go through the menu on our own.

The hint of lemon in the iced water was very refreshing. Ahh...

Hubby decided on Nutella Banana Crepe ($8.90) & Iced Hazelnut Chocolate ($6.50) while I ordered an Irish Cream Latte ($5.90). The service staff took our order, repeated it, thanked us & left.
smile

Hubby asked for the staff again as he emerged from the kitchen. We were worried that we didn't see any sign indicating the use of parking coupons as we walked in. He reassured us that this area was considered a private estate & so no parking coupons were required. Nice...

However, the restaurants will be fully packed & no car park lots will be available on the nights of any typical weekend, eve of Public Holidays & on Public Holidays.

The food did not take long to arrive...but one look & we both agreed that the spread must have been done by an intern chef... lol   I couldn't helped but noticed that the crepe was done the other side up & it also reminded me of a baby wrapped in pampers... tongue
That gave us a good chuckles...
lol

Nutella Banana Crepe ($8.90) & Iced Hazelnut Chocolate ($6.50)

Nutella Banana Crepe ($8.90) & Iced Hazelnut Chocolate ($6.50)

Hubby said that it didn't taste as bad as its look. The combination of plain crepe, fresh banana, Nutella spread & chocolate ice-cream was quite pleasant on the palate. But the Iced Hazelnut Chocolate was rather bland. It was not cold enough & lacked the fragrance of the hazelnut & the soothing chocolaty taste.
Irish Cream Latte ($5.90)

Irish Cream Latte ($5.90)

My Irish Cream Latte was another letdown. It was not hot enough & did not smell nor have any taste of the Irish Cream.

Verdict: chopstick

The whole experience was rather disappointing. Perhaps if we were here at a more popular time slot, it would be completely different. After all, we've always wanted to visit a restaurant with such ambiance that was also located not far from home. Besides, the staff were efficient, polite & friendly. We both agreed that we would give it another chance in the near future.
