Would never have found out about this place if not for a recently organised private book event that was held here. Located amidst the blocks of HDB flats, it is very much a whole in the wall. They sell some pretty decent home made ice cream though, and, like your typical ice cream cafe, coffee, waffles and such. Apparently they offer some imported Japanese ginger ale as well. Not so crazy about their tiered pricing for normal and premium flavours though. If you're prepared to pay the extra, go for their Lemon Bluberry Yoghurt or Pistacho. The extra $1.60 makes all the difference, as i soon found out. I settled for their Salted Gula Meleka and Honey Cinnamon Persimmon. The latter was alright but the former was too salty for me. On the bright side, they do give generous scoops.

Cosy, quiet hangout Smile Dec 04, 2011

Categories : Café

Stumbled upon this cosy little cafe one late afternoon while my friend and I were exploring the Duxton area. Apparently, it had just opened not too long ago, and the place did seem like it was still settling into the business of things. The owner said that they specialised in alcoholic cakes, which piqued my interest, and so we decided to try them out. I had the Chocolate Rum cake while my friend had the Lychee Martini. Both were great on the palette, with the alcohol taste apparent yet not overpowering. I preferred the latter as it was lighter and slices were generous.

Cake decor, on the other hand, appeared somewhat amateur-ish, and pairing was kinda sub-standard - the cakes came with a shot glass of what tasted like store-bought chocolate ice cream and Ribena respectively. I thought these factors kinda undermined the standards of their cakes, esp if they are looking to compete with the big boys in the area. But i guess staying out of the radar is a good thing too, for those who are looking for an unpopulated place to spend a quiet evening chilling out. They're open for event bookings too.

Apparently, this cosy little white-washed cafe is the first Singapore franchise of a modern-concept Italian ice cream cafe. It sells good, authentic gelato in flavours that pack a punch. My vote goes to their Salty Peanut and Blueberry Cheesecake. I had a taste of their Whisky Cream, and trust me when I say it is strong. Same goes to their coffe drinks, so if you're looking for a good mid-day jolt, you should check them out. But what really sets them apart is that they offer soft-serve yoghurt and gelato too (albeit in much more limited flavours). That's not something you see in every gelato store. My friends and I had a go at their waffles too, looked good but it wasn't crispy enough for my liking. Nontheless, their traditional gelato is good enough to have me camping in there with a good book all Sunday afternoon , if only it were nearer my home.

This is one of my favourite places to go for ice cream due to their extensive array of flavours, and of course, the fact that their ice cream is home/store-made (vs. factory-churned)! I like to sample their mind-boggling flavours (read: Salty Egg Yolk, Curry Apple etc.) even if i don't end up actually getting them. :X My regular favourites are Salted Caramel Cheesecake and Apple Pie. Yes, there are actually chunks of apple in them!

They expanded their store not too long ago, to include a proper dining area with more tables and stools, but may still be a bit cramped for some, especially with their loyal stream of crowd. Find some place else with good upholstery and fancy music if you're looking to park and chill. Otherwise, this is the place to satisfy your ice cream cravings.

Categories : Taiwanese | Chinese | Restaurant | Dim Sum

I am not an ardent fan of dim sum and such, but since my friends picked out this place as a belated birthday celebration for some of us, I went along. There, social marketing worked its magic and we ended up ordering the much-hyped-about Xiao Long Bao (Steamed Pork Dumplings) and Fried Shrimp Cake, along with a basket of Shrimp Siew Mai and Wanton in Spicy Sauce.

Ok, Xiao Long Bao fans are gonna hate me but i must say, I never really understood all that fanfare over those steamed pork dumplings. I've tried the ones at Crystal Jade and some other places I dont remember (says a lot) and unfortunately, they all taste the same to my undiscerning tastebuds. Or maybe i just haven't eaten enough of them to know the difference. In any case, the Xiao Long Baos here tasted like...just that - Xiao Long Baos. Yummy if you're hungry, but not crave-worthy.

Xiao Long Bao (Basket of 10)

My favourite of the lot was probably the Fried Shrimp Cake. It was like crispy prawn paste that had been deep fried till golden brown and chock full of crunchy pieces of shrimp. It works, and is good eaten just as it is. Dipping it in any sauce would just taint it. Word of advice: This goes fast, so if you have more than 4pax, you might want to consider ordering double.

Fried Shrimp Cake

Like the shrimp, hate the thick dumpling skin. And don't be fooled, under the shrimp is minced pork.

Shrimp Siew Mai

Apologies for the less than appetizing photo below. Chopsticks got to it faster than my lens could. The sauce for this dish was okay, not too spicy if you're not one for spicy food. It does kinda look better than it tastes though. Anyway, by this time, they were all starting to taste the same alr. Which brings me back to the reason why I don't particularly fancy dim sum. They all start to taste the same after a while.

My friend also ordered a Noodle with Minced Pork in Bean Sauce. I didn't try that so i can't comment much, but he seemed to have enjoyed it well enough.
