yummy tom yum Smile Jun 13, 2012

Categories : Coffeeshop

The coffee shop is opposite UOB Plaza 1, and behind Market Street (Golden Shoes) Food Centre. They have outdoor sitting area, indoor and more seat on 2nd level with air con.

Tantalise your tastebuds, and treat them to the slightly zesty and tangy tom yum flavours that will leave you wanting more... and more… and more.

They have 4-5 types of noodles to choose from, selection of fresh slice fish, fried fish, or tom yum.

If you take away, additional 20cent is chargeable for the container. They will separate the fried fish in a plastic bag so that it won't turn soggy.

My favourtie was maggie mee friend fish tom yum!

The stall is located within the Eunos Crescent Food Centre, right in behind Eunos Mrt. They are at the corner of the centre row.

I can say this is the BEST India stall around this area. Their prata is also one of the better one.

You have to try the bee hoon goreng puteh ikan bilis @ $3.50/$4.

They are not stingy in the ingredients, with potatoes, crunchy ikea bilis, veggies and eggs, simple yet so delicious. I would say the BEST bee hoon goreng in Eunos Crescent!

They open as early as 8am and close as late as 10pm.

RESH and REASONABLE Seafood Smile Jun 13, 2012

- The Shop
Located at Pioneer Food Village on Tuas West Avenue, the over 18-years old non air-conditioned eatery serves Chinese and seafood cuisine.

Isolated in the Western corner of Singapore, surrounded by industries factory, it is not accessible for most of us unless you are working in this area or living in Jurong, Boon Lay and Chinese Garden. Having said that, Singaporean can drive all the way to Johor Bahru for the cze char (煮炒 - “cook and fry”), I am sure you wouldn't mind coming to the other end of our island for their FRESH and REASONABLE price seafood too!

- The Food
Fish Maw Soup @ $4/bowl

Chockful of prawns, mushroom, fish maw and bean sprouts in a thick stock that has a smooth consistency, not the watery kind yet not overly starchy/gluey.

XO Sauce Seafood Crystal Kway Teow @ $8, $12, $16

This dish is famous for its crystal kway teow, and we were especially excited to try the latter as we had not tasted this in Singapore before. Also known as "fen pi" or "bean flour sheets", made from green bean flour, they look translucent kway teow but have a firmer texture than the rice-flour variety. Wok fried with a savoury combination of succulent seafood and XO sauce.

Sweet & Sour Shell-less Prawns @ $24, $30, $40

Hassle free to peel the shells as they are deshelled! Crispy prawns glazed with sweet & sour sauce.

Kung Pao Shell-less Prawns @ $24, $30, $40
Lightly battered prawns sauteed with roasted cashew nuts and dried chillies in kung pao sauce. Personally I would have preferred them more spicy. ;p

Special Braised Pork Ribs with Flat Buns @ $12, $24

Braised to tenderness, bones removed and with a tempting layer of fat pairs well with flat steamed buns. Place a slice of pineapple together with the braised pork in between the bun and pour some sauce over, guarantee to bring a huge grin to your face!

Steamed Pomfret with Nonya Sauce @ $6 per 100 grams

The fresh fish is absolutely delicious, all of us rave about it! The sauce is not spicy, flavorful yet not too strong that overtake the freshness of the fish. If you do like steam fish with sweet, sour and maybe a little spicy flavour, I bet you will love this dish to bits.

Stir-fried Dou Miao $12, $18, $24

This are not the regular ones that look similar to mung bean sprouts, which are full of stem, crunchy but hard to chew. This dou miao has more leaves and is known for its delicate taste. Not everyone knows how to appreciate this chewy veggie, but I likes the unique taste of its own.

Their duo maio (snow pea sprouts/shoots) are imported from Taiwan and is not available everyday.

Black Pepper Crab @ $4.50 per 100 grams

The fresh black pepper crabs were tantalizing to the taste buds. The sauce has lovely peppery taste to match that sweet succulent crab meat.

- My Opinion
I had a satisfying meal! All the seafood are fresh and nicely cooked that the meat are not stick to the shells.

The fresh quality and good taste makes travelling the extra mile worthwhile. Definitely have to try their specialties Special Braised Pork Ribs, XO Sauce Seafood Crystal Kway Teow and Steam Pomfret with Noya Sauce. But be careful, one missed turn into Tuas from the Ayer Rajah Expressway, you would have ended up at the Second Link's Immigration checkpoint.

- The Shop
Gu Ma Jia in Chinese literally means "Auntie's House" serves Chinese Cuisine and Tze Char. The term "Gu Ma" comes from the Chinese way of nephews or nieces calling their eldest aunt. "Gu Ma" loved to organize family gathering where she would be able to cook for the family, basking in the happiness of being able to eat as a complete, united family.

A few years back (August 2009), the family came together and opened a family restaurant named "Gu Ma Jia" and ever since, it has become a place for families to gather, strengthening family bonds through the joy of eating. Therefore, "Gu Ma Jia" not only provides food that tastes like "home", but also a strong symbol of love and joy.

Their 2nd floor is use to hold function that can comprises 70pax, 1 VIP Room with 4 tables for 40pax. They provide food catering for all kinds of buffet functions and corporate events too.

The restaurant is easily accessible from the Potong Pasir MRT (North East Line), and there is a nearby Bus Stop 60211 right in front of POSB, Macpherson Road (8, 61, 64, 65, 66, 90, 125, 147, 151, 154, 628).

- The Food
Herbal Chicken Soup @ S$8.80

Nothing can be more comforting than having a bowl of hearty and nutritious homemade soup during mealtime. This soup is full of herbs, chicken and some clams which is a delightful way to start any meal. The herbs are not overpowered and aroma is just right.

Crispy Bean-jal @ S$12, S$18, S$24

I don’t like brinjal and I have phobia eating it (you don’t want to know why, trust me). However this was the first time, I swear it was really the first time I enjoy eating brinjal because it doesn’t taste like one!

The brinjal are cut into thin slice, deep fried in coated powder and seasoned with special sauce that is extracted from vegetables. The sauce is slightly spicy with a little sweetness. The unique combination to stir fry with french beans create an unique taste to the palette.

Kyoto Pork Ribs @ S$20

Sauteed pork ribs flambeed with Rose Wine was served on a sizzling plate wrap in aluminum foil. The aluminum foil will be drench with rose wine and ignited with fire upon serving. The aroma of rose wine and pork ribs mingle together to exude a distinctive scent. The soury from black vinegar and sweetness of the special sauce brings out the fragrance of the tender pork. I will give up my usual sweet & sour pork for this Kyoto Pork Ribs!

Assam Fish Head @ S$25

This is our favourtie dish tonight, the best of the best!

The fish heads are purchase directly from the market daily, thus ensuring optimal freshness and quality. The assam paste are self made and consist more than 13 spices and herbs. Cooking of the assam require about 4 hours of continue stirring, together with the preparation and blending it will take almost a day to yield great flavour. No wonder the assam is so flavorful & awesome!

Gwen told us that they had reduce the spiciness as customers had feedback that the brutal flavour is too much to handle. The spiciness is just right for my foodie friends.

Sambal Seabass (Hot Plate) @ S$25
Sambal sauce served over seabass on a hot plate. The fish is crispy but the sambal is not spicy enough. I still favour the Assam Fish Head.

Oyster Omelette @ S$12

The perfect marriage of just-cooked-to-perfection juicy fresh oysters, fluffy eggs, coated with a thin layer of sambal chilli. Delicate flavour with a fragrance of sambal. Oh, the oyster is big in size too!

Butter Baked Salted Egg Sri Lanka Crabs (Seasonal Price)

The tender succulent sri lanka crab is cooked with creamy salted egg yolks combined with various condiments gives a truly unique flavour. The only complaint, the salted egg yolks sauce is too little, but still definitely finger lickin' crabilicious!

Prawn Roll $8 (8pcs) @ S$16 (16pcs)

The self made prawn roll filling is meaty and not as salty compare to most. It has a nice crunch from the fried beancurd skin and water chestnuts. I find it tasty and delectable on its own, but if you prefer to have a little zing & sweetness, dripped them in the sweet chilli sauce.

Special Made Tofu with Lingzhi Mushroom @ S$12

You can't get this tofu from any where because they made the tofu themselves. Simple as it look but it was simply delish! Most of us are really full by now (expect Melissa, hehe), we still cheerfully chomped our way through the silky soft tofu with the tasty lingzhi mushroom sauce.

Thai Style Beancurd (6pcs) @ S$6
This beancurd are bought from the market. The firm beancurd has crispy coating and intensifies all the flavors in the thai sweet & sour sauce.

Cereal Sotong with Curry Flavour @ S$20, S$30, S$40
Sambal sotong and Calamari are my absolute favorite.

The chewy huge sotong is dredged in flour, sauteed with a savoury combination of cereal, curry powder, curry leaves and chilli padi bites. I love the tasty cereal to the bits.

Black Glutinuos with Ice Cream @ S$4
Absolutely delicious self made secret recipe by "Gu Ma"! The consistency & sweetness of the black glutinous is just right, topped with a scope of vanilla ice cream, make this warm dessert satisfying to the stomach even after a full meal.

- My Opinion
The casual atmosphere and robust flavorful food certainly brought back memory and make me nostalgic. Service was prompt and food are fresh. Besides the highly raved Assam Fish Head, the Special Made Tofu, Salted Egg Crab, Crispy Bean-jal, Kyoto Pork Ribs and Oyster Omelette was a hit too. In fact, I am tore between the choices! I would highly recommend you to visit the restaurant in a big group so that you can order everything and share!!

The crab is fat and juicy, I would like to try the chilli/black pepper crab in my next visit and I am already planning who to bring along so that I can order more dishes!

- The Shop

Fan Play is a food stall located inside Carrefour hypermarket, under the Deli Section near the fruits and vegetable section. Their signature is the smooth cheong fan (also know as rice noodle roll / chee cheong fun where chee cheong means pig intestine, and fun means noodle; this is because the noodle resembles the small intestine of a pig).

Unlike the usual cheong fun with sweet sauce, Fan Play introduces savoury gravies atop silky smooth cheong fun that imported fresh from Ipoh, which the historic town is famous for. Robert the owner took a lot of efforts to source for the best Cheong Fun manufacturers in Ipoh. And the secret behind the good texture of their cheong fun? Just rice flour and water!

The cheong fan are deliver twice weekly and kept not more than 3 days to maintain the freshness.

Patrons can dine in at the standing table provided by Carrefour or take away. The cheong fan can be store in a air tight container up to 24hours, DO NOT keep in the fridge. The texture will not be the same when you heat up even steaming it. Sauce can be kept in the fridge, heat up and pour over the cheong fan when you are ready to eat them.

- The Food
Organic Soybean Milk @ $1.50

I really enjoy this soya milk A LOT. The flavorsome soybean milk is not diluted, not too sweet and has a nice fragrant of soybean.

Cheong Fan with Savory Brown Sauce & Beer Batter Dory Fillet @ $4.50

Their special light and toothsome brown sauce married cheong fan so perfectly that I do not want the usual sweet sauce anymore! And if we are not wrong, there was some minced meat in the sauce.

They are not stingy on the beer, we were told that they use 1 can of beer for 4 piece of dory fillet! The Beer Batter Dory Fillet does not have the frozen taste and fried to perfection.

Cheong Fan with Chicken Cuttle in Curry Sauce @ $4.50

Strange as it may sound but it taste good! The mild curry sauce goes really well with the crispy juicy chicken cuttle.

Cheong Fan with Teriyaki Chicken in Sichuan Kung Pao Sauce @ $4.50

Their latest creation also the most unique sauce, gives you a taste of sweetness and leave a dash of spiciness lingering thereafter. The spiciness was ok to me, but a little spicy for the rest. The teriyaki chicken was a little tough compare to the chicken cuttle.

Cheong Fan with Mushroom Sauce @ $3.00

The mushroom sauce is 100% vegetarian, no garlic & onions. A good mixture of mushroom and Chinese herb "Dang Gui" (also know as Chinese Angelica Root).

Cheong Fan with Lasak Gravy n Side Dish @ $3.90

I know you may be scratching your head, first was the curry sauce and now lasak? Yes, that's what Fan Play is all about, Playing with sauce that go well with the cheong fan to suite our local palate. The delectable lasak gravy has nice flavour of dried shrimp. I thought I was eating the real lasak!

The add on side dish - Five Spice Minced Meat wrapped in Beancurd Skin, Fish & Pork Meat wrapped in Beancurd Skin and Fried Wanton are selling at $0.50 each and can be purchase to add on to any of your cheong fan.

Sar Kok Liew (stuffed yam bean) @ $0.80 each

Beside the noodles and lasak, Ipoh is also famous for its Sar Kok Liew (stuffed yam bean also known as Turnip Fritters). The turnip was cut into small cubes, adding the right amount of salt so that the turnip won't release too much water, seasoning, flour and onions to make it firm, mold and wrapped in beancurd skin.

The turnip gives a sweetish flavour while the beancurd provides a slightly salty taste, its chewy & crunchy bites make you want to have more.

- My Opinion
Honestly I never thought cheong fan can be so filling! I was even planning to have supper with my husband after the tasting as I assume I will only be half full. But I was so wrong. The serving was as good as one bowl of noodles!

The cheong fan is so smooth and soft that it glides down my throat. I truly like the brown sauce, light and so tasty. If you prefer a unique taste, go for the Sichuan Kung Pao Sauce, enjoy the sweetness and be hit by the spiciness.

Fan Play is considering to bring in the famous Ipoh white coffee which is known for its creamy and smooth taste. Soon, you do not have to travel 8hrs to Ipoh to try their popular delights, its all serving at Fan Play!

Oh, don't say I didn't tell you. Fan Play is running a promotion and has extended to 15 June 2012, 11.59pm. Join Fan Play Facebook Page by clicking LIKE, help them to hit 130 LIKES and you might be one of the lucky 4 winner to bring along 4 friends to enjoy 1 full meal on the house!
