Japanese Dining Sun  Smile Jun 13, 2012
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Ramen | Sushi/Sashimi

- The Vibe
The decoration are very contemporary and chic. The ambiance is cozy and comfortable with the warm light setting. Seats are spaciously laid out too.

- The Food
Their food are pricier than other Japanese restaurants especially the Sashimi. The portion of the food is pretty small, however a great part may be attributed to the higher quality of ingredients and what goes into the presentation of the dishes.

Four of us spend $241.30 including of GST & Services Charge. We order 3 Green Tea and the following:

1) Sun Sashimi Salad - $15.00

2) Kinoko Olive Oil Tsuke - $9.00

3) Wagyu Beef Sirloin - $48 (x2 sets)

4) Ribeye Steak - $33.00 (x2 sets)

I like my steak medium rare, with a warm, succulent, juicy pink center and I must say not many chef in Singapore understand what is medium rare. But the chef here does! The steak is very tender and has a flavorful black pepper sauce.

5) Dessert Trio - $10.00

6) Tofu Cheese Cake - $6.00

I heard the Tofu Cheesecake is highly recommended however I prefer the Kuro Goma Pudding ($6.00) which is the other house favourite. The irresistible home made Black Sesame Pudding is so soft that it melts in your mouth. Uncompromising both in food quality and their aesthetic value, these heavenly desserts surely deserve a second serving.

Sashimi is one of my favourite and will definitely be back to try the next time.

- The Service
Service was very prompt and professional. The service staff is friendly and attentive to the customer. Food is served at ideal intervals too.

reasonable price and tasty thai Smile Jun 13, 2012

Categories : Thai

- The Shop
Diandin Leluk Thai Restaurant is owned by a Singaporean man with his Thai wife. They are located in Golden Mile Complex, a popular haunt to Thai nationals and a place for people to aboard their coach to Malaysia.

This is probably one of Singapore's better Thai cuisine that has a reasonable price with decent authentic flavors.

They have condiments like dried chili flakes, sugar, nam pla (fish sauce) and ground peanut on the table. You can adjust the taste of your food accordingly if you like.

- The Food
Papaya Salad Thai Style @ $5 (also known as "som tam")

The slightly tart flavor of the green papaya combines well with the spice of red chilli, the saltiness of shrimp paste, fish sauce and crunchy peanuts. However this green papaya salad is not as tasty as what we expected.

Clear Tom Yum Seafood Soup @ $10

The tangy and spicy seafood soup is served in a typical Thai ware with candle beneath. Thou I prefer the (red) tom yum soup but both soup is so potent & piquant that every mouthful is mind blowing!

Please savor the soup slowly, if you get choke, a jug of ice water won't be able to save your throat too. Fret not for those who has little tolerance for spiciness, you can always request for less chilli.

Stir-Fried Kangkong with Sambal Belachan @ $8

This veggie is absolutely fantastic! Every bite has a nice crunch with a great blend of chilli and prawn. Yummmm...

Deep Fried Prawn Cake (4 pcs) @ $10

The deep-fried chunky prawns serve with sweet Thai chili is gratify. Thou it's quite pricey for 4pcs of prawn cake, but every bite is absolutely delicious!

Mango with Sticky Rice @ $6

The sweetly ripe mango, served atop a bed of glutinous rice drizzled in coconut milk is a hit!

Lemon Grass Juice @ $1.50
(no picture taken) - i had better lemon grass juice before *^_^*

My last experience on 12 August 2011 was as scrumptious. I had Red Tom Yum, Spicy Long Bean, Prawn and they are equally tasty!

- My Opinion
Their food is much spicier than most Thai Restaurant. For those who don't much take spice, be prepare to "enjoy" a fantastic tingling that tickles in your stomach. It will give you a good purge thereafter!

I have very high tolerance for spiciness and the tom yum is a little spicy to me, so I guess it will be tongue burning for most. I will definitely return again for more Red Tom Yum!

- The Shop
Flor Pâtisserie is set up by Chef Yamashita that was previously from the popular Patisserie Glace.

The little cosy place is located in a shophouse along Duxton Hill. They have few small tables indoor & outdoor that is not able to serve a crowd.

Their Japanese-Styled Patisserie are entirely made of natural and fresh ingredients. They emphasis on using only the freshest and best quality ingredients without any preservatives/raising agents/stabilisers in their patries.

‘Flor’ is a Portuguese word for flower, and is pronounced in Japanese as ‘fu-ro-ru’. Widely recognised and accepted as a symbolic representation of love, passion, and beauty, the flower embodies the delicate balance of nature and beauty. All their cakes look very pretty and are mostly filled with tropical delights.

- The Food
BEST SELLER Waguri Millefeuille @ $6.80

Delicate strands of French chestnut cream piped over a sandwich of crisp, flaky puff pastry and pastry cream, topped with sweetened Japanese chestnuts.

BEST SELLER Napoleon @ $6.50

Traditional Napoleon, made with Chef's signature puff pastry, the strawberry version.

SIGNATURE Berry Berries @ $5.50

Using traditional French method of aeration which does not use any chemical leavening, Chef Yamashita creates his signature strawberry shortcake, which consists of naturally soft sponge filled with fresh strawberries and luscious cream, topped with summer berries.

Original Ice Cheese Tart @ $3.20

In a tartlette of an almond cookie and FLOR's signature creamcheese filling, there is a flurry of tastes and textures; featured most prominently is the melt-in-your-mouth lightly salted creamcheese filling, followed by the incredibly fragrant crunch of the almond cookie. Lucky you if you like this cheese tart as it can be kept in the freezer for up to 3weeks!

- My Opinion
The sponge cakes are soft & moist and I believe they use the same sponge cake as the base for all their cakes because they taste alike to me.

Don't be deceive by the thick white cream. You won't get sick of it even you have to finish the whole slice of cake by yourself. I suppose they are made of egg white and sugar instead of whipping cream therefore it's so light.

However the French chestnut cream from Waguri Millefeuille are too sweet after a few mouth, but the overall is still good, infinitely better tasting than those overly sweet, crusty, gritty frosting made with shortening and powdered sugar.

I will definitely be back to try other mouth-watering cake!

nostalgic soup Smile Jun 13, 2012

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant | Vegetarian | Chinese Soup | Western Soup | Halal

- The Shop
The Soup Spoon was first established in June 2002 at Raffles City Shopping Centre by a trio of soup loving entrepreneurs. The trio managed to start the culture soup using the freshest and most succulent ingredients (NO MSG!!) and expanded to 12 branches with Tiong Bahru Plaza as the newest outlet.

The Soup Spoon has something for everyone with scrumptious lip-smacking soups, tasty sandwiches, salads and sides. Beside the daily selections soup and a revolving menu of other varieties, they have different Chef Specials every month too. Do visit their Soup Menu section to get the latest update.

- The Food (Daily Selection)
Tangy Tomato with Basil (Vegetarian) @ $6.10

The vegetarian puree of roasted tomatoes and basil is creamy with a tinge of red. It slides down the throat with smoothness, first tasting tangy and then slightly spicy... leaving a warm tingling after taste. It's best to go along with Garlicky Foccacia (garlic bread).

Velvety Mushroom Stroganoff (Vegetarian) @ $7.30

Overpowering with the aroma of mushrooms may be too rich and filing for some. But mushroom lover should not give this a miss! The generous mushroom bits and creamy soup is comforting especially on a rainy day.

Tokyo Chicken Stew @ $7

The clear and delicate soup base with chicken marinated in a broth of sake and mirin with an assortment of oriental vegetables is delectable. The simple and authentic soup certainly brought back memory and make me nostalgic. It's my all time favourite!!

Smoked Salmon Sandwich @ $9.90

The big portion and filling sandwich has nothing to rave about. The smoked salmon somehow tasted very artificial and dry. Having said that, this dish has receive a lot of good review from others. Perhaps it's just our unlucky day. If you are famish, their sandwich is certainly a good choice.

Indochine Prawn Wrap @ $9.90

The crunchy big prawns wrap is tasty & zesty, thanks to the refreshing taste of the Kaffir lime. Tasty peanut sesame dressing along with water chestnut and other vegetables make it more delicious just the way it is. - My all time favourite (minus the coriander!).

Thai Vermicelli Salad @ $8.30
This salad brings together a delicious marriage of lemongrass chicken, vermicilli, water chestnut, celery, coriander, carrot, cherry tomato and snow pea sprout. It can be served as a complete meal on its own or as a additional side dishes to your soup. The sauce may be too acid-ing to some but it's still an excellent salad to stimulate one’s appetite.

- The Food (Chef Specials for August 2011)
French Ratatouille (Vegetarian soup) @ $6.80

The little soury sweet stew is thick with wide array of colourful chunky vegetables like Potatoes, carrots, French beans, eggplant, cauliflower, zucchini and fresh peas married with plump and juicy tomatoes stewed to tender perfection and seasoned with fresh herbs. Indeed lavish yet nutritious. The soup is good without the small portion of sour cream too.

A Mid Summer Night's Beef Stew @ $7.90

Inspired by Shakespeare, the stew was created to commemorate the opening of Soup Spoon at Ion Orchard in 2009.

It's a pot of simmering soup begins with a generous portions of tender hearty beef coaxed with the help of aromatics, wine, fresh herbs, tomatoes, and white beans into a flavourful stew that is rich, thick and a gorgeous red hue.

The liquorices taste and citrus flavour is well liked by most of my friends. In short, the stew is bursting with flavour. smile

Braised Chicken with Wolfberries and Daun Salam @ $7.60

Inspired from SouperChef's Hainanese and Malay background, she uses woflberries and red dates which is commonly found in Chinese herbal soups for its liver protection properties and daun salam and chilli mostly found in Malay/Indonesia dishes for its' flavour and anti-aging properties. The combination create an unique taste to the palette.

In case you are curious by the yellowish colour of the soup, this is due to use of turmeric.

Wait, did I just say this soup has anti-aging properties? Wonder if it will do anything to the fine lines on our faces? Ladies, we should have this everyday!!

- My Opinion
The Soup Spoon serves consistently fresh and robust flavorful food in a casual atmosphere. Unfortunately most of the outlets are usually cramped up and packed leaving diners in a eat-and-go situation.

Nonetheless, SouperChef Anna Lim is always very generous with the ingredients. I must say she has gain a faithful "regular crowd" which I think I am one of them. (shh, tell you a secret, I even own a souperholic loyalty card. If you loves soup like me, check out the benefit from the Souperholic Club programme on how to earn and redeem anything off the menu with sufficient points. ;)

Whet your appetite with healthier option at The Soup Spoon!

Yummmy Teochew Porridge Smile Jun 13, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Teochew | Chinese | Coffeeshop

- The Shop

This non air-conditioned Teochew Porridge and Tze Char place is formely from 59 Joo Chiat Place. They are now located in a nondescript shophouse kopitiam along Joo Chiat ROAD, the same stretch as Joo Chiat Complex.

With more than 60-years of history, this place have a lot of pure Teochew cooking such as the house specialities including steamed red snapper ($20 - $25), braised pork trotters ($6), cold crab brimming with creamy golden roe (around $14 each, depending on season), braised duck ($15) and whitebait omelette ($6).

They takes reservations and takeaway orders too. Simply give them a call at least 30min in advance at 6348 0973 to save time on waiting for takeaway orders.

- The Food
Braised Platter @ $8

This succulent braised platter consists of braised pig small & large intestines, bean curbs (taupo) and fried beancurd skin (taukee). A thicker gravy will make it more prefect.

Pork Trotters (Tendon/Thigh) @ $6

The meat is tender but I felt that the gravy is not rich and gelatinous enough. I still prefer those distinctive and strong flavour from the copious amounts of vinegar used.

Stir-fried Kang Kong with Sambal @ $7

We had order Sweet Potatoes Leaves with Sambal but none of us realize it was a wrong dish as we were too concentrate shooting the food. LOLz.

The veggie is crunchy but nothing spectacular. The sambal is not spicy and there is missing flavours from the dried prawns.

Traditional Prawn Roll (Ngoh Hiang) @ $6

Crispy on the outside with generous filling on the inside. I heard they use Pork Mesentary to wrap the prawn rolls, no wonder it's so tasty.

Teochew Style Prawns with Beancurd @ $15

This is not exactly a Teochew dish but it's Ooh la la. The gravy that bathes the big fresh prawns and tofu is very addictive. It goes so well with with both the grainy porridge and rice.

Steamed Mullet @ Seasonal Price

Don't be deceive by the plain look that is only garnish with coriander. The flesh is tender smooth and so fresh that you’ll taste the delicate and sweet flavor of the fish.

To me, steamed fish taste more satisfying than fried fish but you will probably find it bland if you prefer more flavourful taste.

Preserved Radish Omelette @ $5

The preserved radish omelette (also known as Chai Poh Omelette (菜脯卵)) was another winner. The preserved radishes give a good crunch to the omelette and it's not overly salty.

7 of us spend $80 on a total bill with 7 drinks.

- My Opinion
If you are craving for authentic Teochew muay, this is the place.

The variety and the quality of the dishes have reasonable price if you stay away from the seasonal seafood. Having said that, most Tze Char stall do not serve fresh seafood with the same amount paid. Plus you pay a higher price for a quality fresh seafood at restaurant.

The dishes may look simple but they are mostly delicious and it's much better than those Geylang Teochew Porridge.

The Yam Paste (or nee - $2) crowned with pumpkin mash & gingko nuts receive a lot of good review. But sadly, we didn't order that.
