For ice cream lovers!  Smile Oct 12, 2012

If you have a sweet tooth for ice cream, you MUST visit The Daily Scoop.

This ice cream cafe is in the Holland Village area, but tucked away in a quiet corner of Chip Bee Garden. They make all of their ice creams in-house and have very unique flavours.

If you ask nicely, the friendly staff will give you a sample to make sure you like the flavour before ordering a full scoop.

On my most recent visit I tried the Lychee Martini (light and fruity with a hint of vodka), Chendol (good flavor from the gula melaka, but I don't like the bean pieces) and Mango Wasabi (strong mango flavor, but the wasabi was very mild - you only taste it at the beginning).

After the samples, I decided to go with the Salted Mr Brown which is a carmel salt brownie ice cream. It's really delicious without being too strange smile One scoop in a bowl costs $3.20 or you can pay a bit more for a waffle cone.

The ambiance is very cute with cartoons on the walls and I love that there is self-serve water. It does get busy at night, so come early if you want to get a table.

Just across from the Sultan Mosque, this is a cozy little Thai restaurant run by a family from Hat Yai.

While you'll find all the usual Thai favorites on the menu like phad thai, tom yam goong, and papaya salad, the real stand-outs are the Southern Thai dishes. Try the Hat Yai style fried chicken with sticky rice or the Massaman curry - my absolute favorite dish. Depending on the day, they make it with chicken or beef and it tastes like of like if a Thai cooked rendang curry - really rich, oily, coconutty, but extra spicy. And it's served with yellow rice and some kind of fruit chutney. Yum!

Best yet, prices are an incredibly good value. Most dishes designed to serve one person are about $5, or you can order a bigger size for sharing. There's no Singha beer since it's Halal, but they do sweet Thai iced tea and lemongrass juice.

What's not to love? Smile Jun 12, 2012

What's not to love about Food for Thought? The food is fresh and yummy, the coffee is strong, the staff are friendly, the prices are reasonable, and there's even free WiFi! No wonder it's always crowded!

My visit today was just for a quick meeting over coffee, and my cappuccino was perfectly frothy and half-dusted with cocoa powder so it looked like a yin-yang. How cute is that?

I didn't have any food this time, but I do love the bacon and eggs sandwich on foccacia bread. And the cakes are really good too - my favorite is the peanut butter banana one but they don't always have it so go up to the counter and take a look what's fresh from the oven!

Remember to tip because the money goes to support clean drinking water charities!

Singapore's most unique ice cream Smile Jun 05, 2012

I love this ice cream shop so much I've never been anywhere else in Holland Village for dessert. The Daily Scoops makes all their own ice cream flavors and there are some really unique ones like ginger crumble, chili-chocolate, chendol, and Salted Mr Brown (the salt actually brings out the chocolate flavor). My personal favorite is the peanut butter ice cream - it's so rich and creamy!
Not all of them are a hit though, and I was disappointed by the chili chocolate (which tasted simply like chili powder and chocolate ice cream). The shop is cute and there's self-serve drinking water (always appreciated!), but always crowded in the evening so we usually end up eating our ice cream cones on the sidewalk smile They recently raised their prices a little bit, but it's still worth it at around $4 for a single scoop.

Kopi time Smile Jun 05, 2012

Good Morning Nangyang was a cozy little cafe in Chinatown Point that sold good koppi and even better ciabatta toast, but then Chinatown Point closed and I though Good Morning disappeared with it :~(

Thankfully, I was wrong! They're still around, but now at Hong Lim Park (which you may better know for Speaker's Corner). It's a stand-alone shop now with some outdoor tables and a small indoor area. It's less convenient, but still worth coming.

I wasn't hungry so just had a cup of kopi - thick and sweet! I hope their ciabatta recipe hasn't changed either.
