Big airport McDonalds  Smile Sep 25, 2012

I was early to meet my friend's flight, so went to McDonalds to have a snack and kill some time.

It's a very spacious McDonalds with lots of seating and a separate McCafe booth. I was really thirsty so ordered a large iced tea for $2.90 -- it was HUGE! If I knew it was that big a medium would have been good enough.

Also ordered an Oreo McFlurry. It was $2.20 which I think is 20 cents more than most McDonalds outlets? Anyway, it was not very well mixed. Like a scoop of vanilla ice cream with the cookie pieces on top. It's mixed by machine - how hard is it to mess that up?

Anyway, this definitely the best value for money place to get a snack and wait for friends' flights to arrive at T2.

Yummy tempura & sushi! Smile Sep 05, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi

I had a very nice dinner at Ten Tempura last night. I had noticed this restaurant before as it's located above the escalators from Clarke Quay MRT, but didn't really think to try it until I saw it on Groupon.

I ordered the tempura and cold udon set for S$13

I don't eat shrimp, and the staff were kind enough to change it to vegetable tempura for me. The cold udon were thick with a good chewy texture. The broth was a bit bland, but better once I added all the wasabi. The tempura (sweet potato, eggplant, mushrooms) was crispy and so delicious! I'll definitely order this again.

They also have a small selection of sushi. When we walked into the restaurant I actually noticed that there was a sushi certificate on the wall, so I ordered a couple kappa maki rolls (cucumber sushi). They were a bargain at $3 per roll and cut into 6 pieces. They were very good with sesame seeds mixed with the cucumber. Next time I'd like to try the tempura sushi!

I ordered a cold green tea which was complimentary, but they also serve canned drinks ($2.20) and a selection of sake.

The restaurant is simple, but very clean and modern. The servers were very polite and professional, pouring the soy sauce into the bowls for us and happily accommodating my request for vegetarian tempura, but it took a while to get their attention when it was time to order and then when it was time to ask for the bill. If only the servers were a bit more attentive, I'd give this place a 10/10!

Crispy prata & yummy curry  Smile Sep 03, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Indian | Restaurant | Curries | Halal

I was in the area so decided to stop by to try the famous roti prata. Thasevi has been around for more than 50 years so it must be good, right?

We arrived around 4pm on Sunday afternoon and it was quite busy. Lots of the tables were stacked with dirty plates. You have to wait in queue to order, pay, and then they will bring the food to your table.

Plain roti prata: $1 each.

We just wanted a snack, so ordered plain roti prata and some mutton curry. The prata cost $1 each and were quite small so we needed 2 roti per person. The texture was perfect - crispy on the outside and soft and flaky inside. Yum! The curry sauce that came with it was average tasting, not too spicy. We also ordered a plate of mutton curry for $5 to eat with the prata. It was more flavorful and the meat was tender.

I definitely liked the roti, but don't think it's worth a special trip out to Jalan Kayu just to eat roti.

As good as Lucky Plaza branch!  Smile Sep 03, 2012

Categories : Malay | Restaurant | Curries | Kids-Friendly

I'm a big fan of the Lucky Plaza branch, so decided to try the famous ayam penyet at the Bedok outlet as well. Ordered my favorite dishes of ayam penyet and gado-gado.

Ayam penyet (boneless): The boneless ayam penyet is $6.90 including rice, chicken, and one piece each of fried tempeh and tofu. It arrived quickly and tasted just as good as the original from Lucky Plaza. The chicken was really crispy and the sambal is so good! If you're a chili lover, it's a must try.

Gado-gado: This Indonesian salad of boiled veggies in peanut sauce costs $5.50. It's yummy and the peanut sauce will cool your mouth off from the samabal. The portion is big enough to share.

We arrived around 7pm on Saturday night and there was no queue for a table. The restaurant is looks quite new and is cleaner than Lucky Plaza. Definitely one of the best places to eat at Bedok Point.

Yummy ramen!  Smile Sep 03, 2012
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Ramen

If you're looking for mid-priced Japanese food at Suntec City, this place is great! I ordered their signature Shiyu ramen and it was really delicious with salty broth, springy noodles, and tender pork. Ordered a side dish of gyoza too which were good and stuffed with ground pork and veggies, but nothing special. I think the gyoa cost about $5 for a plate of 5.

Service was very prompt and I like that green tea is complimentary for all diners. They were good with the refills, too!

I ate here because I had bought a Groupon for Shin Sapporo -- 2 bowls of ramen for $15. The regular price is $10-17 per bowl, but I would still be happy paying that amount for good ramen, excellent service, and free green tea. If you eat at off-peak hours like 5pm there is a discount.

I'll definitely be back.
