I was at Maxwell for a quick lunch and wanted to try something different. This stall had a big display of crispy fried chicken and some awards posted, so I figured I'd give it a try.

I do love spicy food, so I ordered the sambal chicken rice for $4. It's all made with the same crispy fried chicken, but you could also get it with sweet and sour sauce, lemon sauce, tomato sauce, or fried rice with fried chicken.

It wasn't a very generous portion for $4 and there were a lot of bones in the chicken. While it was crispy, the chicken wasn't hot. It was around 11:30am so you'd think they'd be cooking fresh batches for the lunch crowd? The sambal was fine, but didn't rock my world like the sambal at ayam penyet ria. It wasn't fiery at all :/

I wouldn't order it again - there are better options at Maxwell!

Yummy treats  Smile Jun 20, 2012

Categories : Food Court | Desserts and Cakes

After a long afternoon of book-shopping at Bras Basah I was in need of a treat, so made my way down to the food court on the ground level. The desserts stall had lots of choices, and I went with the air chendol. It was really refreshing with the mixture of the ice and sweet syrups, and then all the jellies and beans underneath the pile of ice.

It was so big even with 2 people sharing it we couldn't finish it. So that's a pretty great value considering it cost about $2.50.

It's not the cleanest or nicest looking foodcourt though, so you probably won't want to linger over dessert too long!

Cool & cozy cafe Smile Jun 20, 2012

About a 15 minute walk from Harbourfront MRT, 93 degreesC Cafe is a great place to spend a few hours with a book and cappuccino.

The cafe's name refers to the perfect temperature of the boiled water for making coffee, so you can be sure that they take the quality of their drinks very seriously. My cappuccino had a rich coffee flavor, frothy milk, and a cute latte-art heart on top. My boyfriend also really enjoyed his espresso. I think they also sell their coffee beans so you could try to make coffee this good at home.

They also serve breakfast and pastries, but we weren't hungry - just in need of caffeine. But there's actually a South Indian restaurant next door, so next time we come out here we'll probably have dosa masala for breakfast and coffee at 93 degreesC.

Fun, but a tourist trap OK Jun 20, 2012

Categories : Bars/Lounges | Hotel

It's no secret that The Long Bar at Raffles Hotel is meant for tourists. I mean, the Singapore Sling is not such a great drink that you'd regularly pay $25 for it. Even a coke at the Long Bar costs more than $10.

That said, it's the kind of iconic place you need to have a drink at at least once in your life. So, with that in mind, my boyfriend and I headed into the Long Bar for a drink on a Saturday afternoon. While I was expecting it to be over-priced, I wasn't expecting such lousy service.

We found our way to the bar on the 2nd floor and there was no one at the door to greet us. We stood there for a bit looking around, waiting for someone to tell us whether we should seat ourselves or if they'd show us to a table (it was about half-full), then just chose a table ourselves. To get a menu we actually had to wave down a server and ask for one - I ordered a Singapore Sling, and my boyfriend ordered a vodka tonic.

The drinks took a while to come as they seemed to be preparing the Singapore Slings in big batches. A table of 4 people who arrived after us and all ordered Singapore Slings received theirs the same time as I did. While it was an overpriced drink, I have to admit I actually liked the Singapore Sling - sweet and fruity with a big wedge of pineapple on the rim, which was really refreshing on a hot afternoon.

My boyfriend's drink was nicely presented with the alcohol and tonic separated, but when he mixed it and had a sip he realized he'd been given gin and not vodka. Again, we had to wave down a server to say that he had received the wrong drink. They replaced it, but no polite "Sorry about the mix-up" or anything like that.

It's a nice place to take visitors, but I wouldn't go back on my own. But I really think they need to improve their service if they want their foreign guests to be happy. Obviously there's a 10% service charge, but based on the service received I would not have tipped. 10% is actually considered a small tip in the USA/Canada, so if they provided better service and were friendlier, many staff would be getting more than that from the tourists drinking here
