Stir-Fried Beef Hor Fun Smile Jan 14, 2012

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Restaurant | Dim Sum

It has been quite a while since I last visited a Crystal Jade joint and I had eaten at this one before (though I can't remember what I had eaten then!)

In any case, I'm surprised again to see that there is a queue number, like that of KOI bubble tea shops, before I was ushered to my table. The queue numbers ranged from single no., 100+ and 200+. 3 different numbers flashed consecutively and I'd recommend any customer to stay outside and wait patiently for your turn, instead of browsing around nearby and miss your turn (numbers can jump randomly!)

Service was prompt, where my order was taken and food was served quickly. I've ordered the Stir-Fried Beef Hor Fun, a glass of warm Soy Milk and Herbal Jelly (the latter 2 makes up a set!). I've eaten this hor fun previously, and truly, it doesn't disappoint this 2nd time round. What sets this apart from the usual Tse Char is it has lots of beansprouts in it, which probably gave the dish a mild sweetness. The beef was very tender and all parts of it is chewable, and "swallow-able"! As for the hor fun, it was very soft. For a dish like this, it doesn't deserve a single devour! It needs to be enjoyed with slow bites.

Now, do not belittle the serving of the hor fun. In fact, I regretted not sharing it with my mother, and not ordering Chinese Tea after the first mistake (therefore unable to enjoy the Soy Milk fully)! The Soy Milk which I ordered was really good too! It was thick and not too sweet. Looking around, most other people had ordered a glass or two! lol

I've eaten the Herbal Jelly in Crystal Jade before. But this time round, it's a fresh encounter again! lol I could really taste the HERBS within, so if you are not going to pour in honey, you are in for some bitterness! In any case, it was a good finish to the already-satisfying meal! lol (Yikes! Forgot to take photo of this dish!)

There will be a next visit to a Crystal Jade joint! lol

Seafood Paella Smile Jan 13, 2012

Reached about 12.30pm at Marche. Noticed quite a few empty tables around, so no need to make lunch reservations unless you have a large group.

Was ushered to my table immediately upon arrival. Decided to break away from the usual order of Rosti with Mushrooms (which is absolutely wonderful!), and attempted Seafood Paella! It's located at a corner, just beside the stall selling Rosti. There was nobody there when I got there and I had full view of the Seafood Paella, with all the mussels neatly decorated in a large wok. Fried egg to go with it is optional (but I'd recommend it for egg lovers! lol)

It took about 2 mins before my Seafood Paella was served to me in a small wok. One of the staff then showed me what sauce/garnishing available in front of the stall to add to my dish. The only addition I'd like was a lemon wedge, but I was strongly recommended to take 2 wedges! Then, for my fried egg, he added some pepper and showed me to the Salmon Fillet stall to add a little Kikkoman sauce to it! Quite amusing to me but hey, what excellent service! lol That's not all! He even got the cutlery and serviettes for me, and placed them on my tray! Would have taken note of his name but he walked away too fast (to serve others I guess!)

The food - really yummy!!! Warning - It might not appeal to folks who like their rice hard, but works really well for me! It's a little like yam rice in texture. Now, there are supposed to be 2 mussels on it, but I've given them away to my friends, who said "the hum" was very delicious! Haha! There are also 2 prawns, some chicken meat and mushrooms in the rice. All in all, a very flavourful dish!!!

Recommendation: This dish must be consumed with at least 2 pax. There is no way to down all this rice in 1 pax's stomach!!! I even tried to "squeeze" more rice in by drinking the "Fresh Lemonade Juice" (which was quite sweet by the way!), but really, no way....lol

Total Cost:
Seafood Paella - $16.26
Fried Egg - $1.59
Fresh Lemonade Juice - $3.36

Taiwanese Food Smile Aug 20, 2011
Categories : Taiwanese | Restaurant | Noodles

I was expecting this eatery to be a corner kiosk, but was pleasantly surprised it has "equal standing" with other eateries such as Thai Express, in terms of space.

My friend and I were promptly ushered to our seats and food was served quickly after we made our orders. We ordered the following:

Meatball Soup
The soup was flavourful!! Meatballs were big, and makes a good alternative to the other rice and noodle mains.

Pepper Salt Chicken
On first look, it just looks like ordinary fried chicken pieces. But it was really delicious!!! I could taste the pepper within, but it wasn't to the extent of "hot". The chicken wasn't salty too. All fried chicken lovers should give a shot at this dish! Also, there are also some green leaves served with the dish, which I think are deep-fried. Its taste blends with the chicken when eaten together. Wonderful!

Fried Tofu
This dish was ordered by mistake. My friend had ordered the set meal, where there is 1 side dish. We assumed that that side dish would be served in as a smaller serving, hence ordered this in place of the Century Egg Tofu (Cold Tofu), which we would like to try in a larger serving. Nothing special about this dish, only that the tofu was well-fried, i.e. not over-fried until the skin becomes tough. The sauce that accompanies iy tasted bland, even though there were chilli bits in it. I loved the bits of sour cabbage which came with this dish. They gave a refreshing taste.

Century Egg Tofu (Cold Tofu)
I like the flaky bits on this tofu. Never knew what it was, but it was nice! The century egg wasn't too "intense" in taste, hence it was palatable to me. Good combination of food here.

Iced Jasmine Green Tea
This was in fact, a bubble tea. The drink was rather sweet in the beginning, but after the ice has melted, it was just right. The pearls in this drink can top that of Koi's, Gong Cha and Froggy Tea! They're smaller and the texture is also softer, without losing the chewiness. Also, the serving of pearls was just right. I get sick of bubble teas sometimes when the amount of pearls overwhelm the drink, even after I requested for the pearls to be halved in amount! So, give the bubble tea here a shot!

(On this note, if you have ordered hot teas, they come served with pearls as well! Interesting!)

Braised Pork Belly with Egg
This is 1 sinful dish! But with every sin, comes pleasure! The braised pork was really SO SO SO good!!!!!!!!!! The BEST DISH out of all the above dishes!!! The pork simply absorbs all the flavours with it! Moreover, it was cut into small pieces, hence you could devour the fats in the pork, without feeling guilty (whatever fats will seem insignificant, due to the small cuts). The only shame is, they didn't include this dish as a side dish in the set meal, even when i offered to top up the difference. It has to be ordered as an ala carte side dish, or as braised pork rice. Too much rigidity for a good dish like this! Guess "Lai Lai" could also explore combining this dish with their vermicelli! I would probably KO from this combination!

Total Cost: Meatball Soup - $6.90
Pepper Salt Chicken - $4.20
Century Egg Tofu - $4.50
Iced Jasmine Green Tea - $3.50
Braised Pork Belly with Egg - $8.90

Lenas Smile Aug 16, 2011

First time at Lenas. Just learnt that it was associated with MOF, the MOF privilege card is applicable for usage at Lenas as well.

I tried to call for reservations previously but nobody answered my call. Nonetheless, upon arrival, my family and I were promptly ushered to our seats. There were so many food choices available in the menu, including the sauces and sides. We took some time to decide on our mains, sides and desserts. The waitress attending to us was very patient with our orders, and even recommended sauces and sides to complement our mains. Good service!

I ordered a Fungi Pasta, Potato Wedges and a Mushroom Soup Bread Bowl. The creamy Fungi Pasta was good!! So as the Potato Wedges and Mushroom Soup! However, I won't be ordering the mushroom soup bread bowl for my next visit as I wouldn't want to eat the whole bread bowl myself again!!! The thing about bread bowls is this: Once I order it, I can't finish it myself, but I can't bear to discard it cos' it looks too cute to be thrown away. Solution? Gorge myself with it!

Total Cost: Fungi Pasta - $10+
Potato Wedges - $6+
Mushroom Soup Bread Bowl - $8+

Brought my gf here for lunch. Was really tempted to go for some healthier options such as ramen but the pork cutlet menu really got me! How to say no to Porky Pig?!?!?!?!

I don't really know what's the difference between black pig and normal pig cos' they will all just taste good and end up in my tummy. So, with all the available choices, I decided to go with the Cheese Pork Cutlet! lol

Man, it was good!!! Perfect combination!!! lol Also, the miso soup was good too!!! It's got bits of pork within and was so rich in flavour!!! Cabbage was "re-fillable" too, so you can have all the fibre you need for the meal! lol
