Salad for Dinner OK Jan 21, 2013

Categories : Café | Salads/ Acai Bowl

It was a quiet Sunday late evening for me. I headed to Marina Square to search for CD for my supplier. So along the way towards Marina Square from City Hall MRT, I came across this café called SaladStop. It is a new café located at Citylink Mall. The brightness of the shop attracts my eyes attention.

SaladStop is a chain of café/ salad bar that focus on bringing health conscious of fresh, tasty and innovative food options in Singapore. They offer healthy alternatives including soups, snacks, low-fat wraps, fresh juices and more. They also have wide range of varieties for customers to create their own salads. They are also ready list of salads menu with interesting names for customers to choose from. It is more like a fastfood concept where most of the customers who drop by will pack and go. I was sitting there for almost an hour and I was observing that most customers opt for take-away practise. This explains why the place is quiet.

Since it has similar fastfood concept, the ordering system is self-service.The menu is displayed above the salad bar counter so customers can easily lift up to see the available options. I decided to go for Hail Caesar Salad @ S$10.00. It consists of romaine, egg, parmesan shavings, bacon, croutons and caesar dressing. The crew then get all the ingredients ready from the salad bar counter and pour it into a big bowl to mix with the dressing on the spot. Once he is done with the mixing, he will serve the ready mix salad into a nice big bowl. The bowl was filled with the fresh green lettuce and the mixed ingredients. The portion was quite huge and you can request them to chop the lettuce leaves more finely so that the dressings can be mixed evenly and easier to consume as well.

I paid S$12.50 for my salad and a bottle of coke for my dinner. The price has inclusive of GST. It was nice dinner. The salad was refreshing and I am surprised that I can finish everything by myself. The mixing was well done and tasty. I am able hear the crunchy sounds when I had the lettuce with croutons. Surprisingly the croutons were not that hard to bite. It was cut into smaller pieces which I think it’s a good idea so that we as customers won’t find it too hard to consume together with other ingredients.
I would definitely visit them again to try other signature salads. I also want to create my own salad which is also available here. The “Create your own salad” priced at S$9.50 for salad and S$9.00 for wrap with unlimited toppings. The signature salads can be made into salad or wrap depending on your preferences. I think SaladStop makes healthy eating a delight as the taste of green vegetables aren’t that bad afterall.

Fried Char Kuay Teow Smile Dec 25, 2012

Categories : Malaysian | Food Court

Christmas Day today and my friend and I went to the largest SEA aquarium for a tour. So, after we ended the tour, we went to Malaysia Food Street to use our S$5dollar voucher given when we purchased the entrance ticket for SEA Aquarium. We were searching high and low of Malaysia Food Street and the direction isn't clear for us although it is next to USS only.

We were amazed with the design of the place. It gives the feeling that we are back to Malaysia!
Random photos taken in the daytime.

I decided to use my S$5 dollar meal voucher to purchase the fried kuay teow. The queue was long and i waited for around 15 minutes to get my food. However, the queue was systematic. We placed our order to the cashier counter and receive the receipt from payment with the written waiting number. The staff will call out the numbers once the kuey teow was ready to serve.

The food was presented nice and the prawn size was quite large compared to the ones that you try at normal coffeeshop in other places. The kuey teow texture was good and not too soft or soggy. It turned out fine for me.

So if you wish to try Malaysia local food delights, you can take the monorail from vivocity to Waterfront station. Alight the station and walk towards to USS direction. You will find the Malaysia Food Street building is just next to it. Alternatively, you can use sentosa broadwalk to walk to Sentosa but it will take much more time.

Mamak Foods Smile Dec 17, 2012

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Halal | Kids-Friendly

My colleague has recommended a nice place for dinner cum supper. This place is definitely a good place for supper in Singapore. It is located at Simpang Bedok which is a stretch of halal restaurants that open till late night. It is a place for hangout after the night activities.

One of the famous eateries is Spize which also provide delivery services as well. Spize would be good choice as they served varieties of foods. You name it. Western, malay and chinese cuisine are available. They also served desserts as well.

Roti John Chicken & special (S$5.50) is absolutely splendid with its presentation and taste as well. Savoring with the taste of it!

Hotplate grill garlic mushroom chicken chop with mashed potatoes (S$12.50). The sauce is compatible with the grilled chicken chop which makes the overall taste just melt into your mouth when you taste it.

Squid with black bean and curry leaves (S$8.00) which taste Q and fresh.

Cheesy fries (S$5.90) Super duper delicious! It is definitely a good choice for snacks and appetizer. I love the cheesy taste.

Ginger & spring onion clam (S$8.00) which taste fresh and the sauce is compatible with clams.

Hotplate egg tofu with fresh mushroom (S$12.00) Exactly same cooking style as chinese style. I love the tofu smoothness with the eggs. Splendid choice!

The place provide affordable and reasonable pricing. Spize also provide choices to choose from and definitely a good place for gathering and makan session. It's the atmosphere eating along the road side which we can only find in Malaysia.

The staff will come and take your order and served the foods. We will then need to proceed to their cashier counter to make payment with the order papers listed on our table once we decided that we had enough.

No much comment on the service but definitely a good choice for the foods as they served quite a wide range of choices.

For more food reviews, check out my blog: http://hazeldiary.com

I finally got the chance to try Bedrock Bar & Grill last weekend. We were rushing down before the last order at 2.30pm. The restaurant is located next to 313 Somerset and to be exact, next to Marche with a door away.

We settled down and browse through the menu and discover that there are lunch deals and SG50 express lunch set available. Thus, we decided to order the lunch menu instead of using the app. Complimentary flat breads were served after our orders are placed. I love the texture of the freshly breads from oven and best spread with garlic infused oil and butter.
Seafood & Poultry 3- Course Set Lunch S$38

As for the starter, we decided to go with Classic Lobster Bisque with chive cream. I can taste the strong seafood flavour in it and chive cream perfects the soup with its touch of creamy taste.

There are few choices for the mains and I decided to try Baked Barramundi Fillet served with asparagus, sundried tomato and olive tapenade. Chef did a good job on the fish with crusty skin and soft meat that absorbs the olive tapenade that gives a fragrance in it. Although the plating looks slightly oily but taste wise isn’t as it looks.

As for dessert, we decided to go with sticky stout and toffee pudding served with gingernut ice-cream. Absolutely one of the best I tried so far. Well-balance fine tuning that delights us for the sweet ending. There are zesty pomegranates served together as well.
SG50 Express Lunch S$50

We decided to try this limited offer deal of the month since steaks are available in the menu. Instead of ordering the usual mains, this deal seems affordable for our first try here. There are only two choices available for this SG50 menu and we opt for Slow-Cooked Oyster Blade Steak with fries and salad. Perhaps we are expecting more on the steak standard here as I find the taste wise is lack of the sparks on the expectation in me. The taste wise is reasonably good and the meat is soft and juicy with the slow cooked method. It’s my first time trying slow cooked steak and I think I will stick to grilled steak though.
This set comes with a glass of Terrazas Altos Del Plata Malbec but unfortunately it was not served. Thus, I didn’t get to enjoy it with the steak. We only realized when we left the restaurant. We emailed the restaurant and they replied on the issue. We were told that a complimentary of a glass of red wine for 2 pax and a snack bar when we dine in with them again.
Overall, the dining experience is still pleasant. The service staff was well-trained on the serving although they forget the glass of wine totally. Total amount bill inclusive of 10% service charges and 7% GST was S$103.58.

Irresistible Dessert Smile Nov 23, 2014

Categories : Café | Halal | Burgers and Sandwiches

Finally visited FIX after seeing and reading reviews on instagram and social media about their cakes. The cakes are so beautiful not to be missed out in instagram which attracts quite an attention too.FIX is an alfresco poolside café located in HomeTeam NS –JOM Club. It is hidden within the neighborhood area in Ah Hood Road. It is also the brainchild by the same owners of GRUB at BishanPark and their recent newly opened supper bar, GRUB at 221 Rangoon Road.
Since my foodie partner and I wanted to try various cakes, we decided to order one main set only. Ordering and payments are to be made at the counter before foods are served to our table. We order a main set S$14.00 which consists of Beef & Kimchi Naanwich and a glass of Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Banana Milkshake. It is quite creative to use naan to replace breads for sandwiches which is filling as it uses flour to make too. The fusion combination of beef & kimchi was just nice to compliment the bland taste of naan. The golden egg yolk that flows through the beefs, sauces and naan wrapped out the whole taste. The milkshake was recommended and true enough it tasted flavorful and rich when it is served cold. However, the drink was not cold enough after a while. And the taste after that was not that nice anymore.

We ordered a glass of Lemon Curd Milkshake S$7.00 separately. Refreshing taste when it is served cold.
And here comes the highlights of all where we had 4 different types of cakes.

Started off with Passionfruit, mango & coconut chiffon cake S$7.00/slice. Light, soft and tender chiffon with fruity taste. It’s almost everyone favourite list.

Mont Blanc S$6.00/slice that is new in the display. We ordered one to try and the sweetness was just nice and not overwhelming. But the crust was slightly hard and we have difficulties breaking it to bits to go with the topping. Perhaps it gets harder after hours of baking.

Butterscotch Arabica Choux S$6.00/slice. Surprising salted caramel with chocolate in the middle gives a ‘wow’ taste.

Cacao Barry Chocolate Truffle Cake S$7.00/slice. It was made with 70% cocoa. If you are a chocolate lover, you might not want to give it a miss.

Total amount S$47.00 that included GST and no service charges. Servings are within 15 minutes and well-presented. The concept original handmade goods are truly creative with the foods and desserts which can satisfy the visual and filling too. Definitely will be back for more desserts!
