Xin Yuan Ji which is located along Tan Quee Lan Street is a walking distance from Bugis MRT station is well-known of their charcoal fish steamboat and fish soup. It is just opposite Bugis Junction shopping mall. I have always wanted to try whenever I passed by the restaurant but there is always a queue outside. Since my friend was in town and she is craving for soup base dishes, we decided to queue for dinner. Surprisingly, we didn’t queue for too long to get a seat.
Menu

Menu

Red snapper fish meat steamboat that available in S, M, L size. We ordered Small @ S$40.00 portion which is just nice for two of us. It was served pipping hot with charcoal burning below. The soup essence was rich with the sweetness of the fish and also the veggies. The sliced fish was fresh and sweet . Mixture of veggies and other ingredients made the whole steamboat very filling. Additional side dish is available range from S$3.00 for the veggies. So, we had cabbage to add on to the soup.

We also ordered Spinach with assorted egg @S$13.80. It’s a common zi char signature dish. We love the generous serving and the stock taste flavorful with the mixture of century and salted eggs. My friend loves the soupy taste of it.

The serving time is within 15 minutes time despite full house. The staffs are efficient in serving and clearing the tables to ensure the turnover operation going smoothly. As for payment wise, you will need to pay it at their cashier counter. If you are dropping by, make sure you bring enough cash on hand as the restaurant only accepts cash payment which is clearly pasted outside the glass display of the shop.

Exploring a buffet restaurant located with a short 10 minutes walk from Dhoby Ghaut MRT station and right in front of a bus stop along Bras Basah Road.Straits’ Café is well known with it’s award winning laksa and their durian desserts. The café is one of the choice to whose who wants to enjoy international buffet without spending too much. I personally feel that the buffet price is quite affordable.

Glass panels framing part of the restaurant gives the customers to view of the street life along Bras Basah Road. The interior design of the restaurant provides a comfortable dinning place. However, the space in between the walking path and the serving tables are quite close. Open concept kitchen is also one of the highlight here as we can see the chefs on action and the foods served are still in good condition. The service staff was quite attentive as they will promptly clear the plates once we cleared our foods. This gives us ample reasons for not having many rounds.

As usual, sashimi counters are available. The chef will slice upon your requested choice of sashimi to maintain the freshness of the sashimi. Cooked foods choices from chinese cuisine and indian cuisines are available next to the sashimi sections.

Seafood varieties are quite limited but I do enjoyed the snow crabs served though.I saw some of the customers are mainly having snow crabs throughout the night. Service staff will serve the utensils and lime washing bowl for the table that are having snow crab. This ease the inconvenience and I think it is quite a thoughtful service.

Do not miss the award winning laksa which is also the hotel’s signature. The gravy taste isn’t too milky and the noodles texture was smooth and savour into the soup. However, the ingredients wasn’t quite generous and the cockles size was small.

Durian pengant and durian cake are the signature of Rendezvous. Durian pengat is rich with durian pulp and I am so in love with the taste. I had 4 cups of it and it was truly sinful. Durian cake has the soft vanilla sponge and durian cream. The combination is quite unique. Durian puffs and durian crepes are readily in chilled condition. Durian puff wasn’t that good for me as I felt the puff texture is slightly hard and dry.

Dessert counter is available with various choices of cakes and desserts. It completes with a chocolate fondue too. Fruits and ice-creams are available for those who loves to enjoy desserts. You will be spoilt with choices.

Seafood Dinner Smile Sep 13, 2013
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Restaurant | Zi Char

I had a farewell dinner with my ex-colleagues. Since she is leaving Singapore for good, we decided to treat her Chinese seafoods at Uncle Leong Seafood branch located at Toa Payoh. It’s 7-8 stops away from Toa Payoh Interchange MRT station. You can take bus 238 to reach the building from the interchange.

It was almost full house when we reached around 7.30pm and luckily we had made a reservation. So, no worries on the seating place.

Here are the foods that we ordered that night:-

We ordered two method of cooking crabs. First is the Chili Crabs ($40 per kg) .Crabs is sweet and the gravy was rich and thick to go with the fried bun (mantou). Not too spicy for me and absolutely not to miss when you are having zi char at Uncle Leong.

Next is the Salted egg crab.I personally felt it is a bit dry and I am unable to taste the strong salted egg taste coated on the crab shell. The crab meat flesh fresh and sweet though.

Chinese Spinach with eggs (S$10/12/15). I love the combination of the spinach with eggs and the superior stock.

Marmite Chicken (S$12/15/20) . We ordered small size and the portion is quite generous. The marmite coated with the chicken and makes the chicken taste sweet and tasty.

Cod Fish with the choice of method cooking is available in the menu. We chose “chye poh” style. The fish taste fresh and it goes well with the pre-fried chype poh that was spread over the fish.

Claypot Beancurd (S$10/15/20) which comes with the decent proportion of bean curds and vegetables.
Overall waiting time is around 20 minutes but the crab order was delayed slightly. Neverthless, we had a great night catching up with great company and also good foods. We even got few dollars discount from the total bill as I was trying my luck with the staff. The staff said if we are paying by cash, they can round up the total bill. So, quite lucky for us that night. Some of the photos we took that night before we ended the session.

Tea Time Smile May 11, 2013

Categories : French | Fusion | Bakery

Maison Kayser is a new French boulangerie bakery opened at Scotts Square basement 1. The bakery is from Paris, France and it is famous of their croissant and artisan breads.Since my friend is here for the day, we decided to have high tea session together here.It is our first time enjoying our tea/ coffee session.

My friend ordered the tea time set that includes moccha and Tarte Brazilia @ S$6.55. Tarte Brazilia is a combination of baked coffee and chocolate custard filling which taste awesome! It has the sweet taste and the sweetness level isn’t high.BY doesn’t take too sweet stuffs but she find it is very delicious.

I ordered Scramble egg with croissant @S$5.60. It is recommended by the service staff. The exterior of the croissant was cripsy and light taste while the innards are soft and flaky.

We also ordered another tea time set which is Eclair Tea Time Set @S$5.61. There is an option between chocolate and coffee and i wanted to try chocolate but there isn’t any left so the only option is coffee flavor. This is the best eclair that i found so far in Singapore. The coffee specks throughout the custard filling inside which was adequately sweet and the taste of the coffee isn’t very strong. It is done perfectly well. I will definitely try their chocolate eclair soon.
All the price stated exclude 10% service charge and 7% GST. Total damage @S$20.91. The service staff is friendly and they will provide suggestion when you ask for their opinions. However, the staff wasn’t prompt to response as it took them quite a while to notice us when we put our hand up for bill.

Sembawang White Bee Hoon Smile May 09, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Coffeeshop | Zi Char | Noodles

I had a chance to patron the famous white bee hoon which located along Japan Tempang, Sembawang. You Huak Restaurant , occupying a corner shophouse unit which is just opposite the Sembawang Shopping Centre. The location wasn’t that convenient though as you need to take a bus from Sembawang MRT station to get there.

Photo of people queuing for dinner.

The restaurant is an open-air eatery which was light up with very bright cool white fluorescent lamps on evening onwards. They served range of zhi char dishes which was all listed on their menu. All the available dishes are shown on the laminated menu so that customers can just order directly from the categorized dishes.

The signature dish, Seafood White Bee Hoon @ S$12.00 (L) served in generous portion. The wok hei was there and the moist of the bee hoon stir-fried with the seafoods (prawns, squids, eggs and vegetables) tasted similar to Hokkien mee.But the bee hoon taste lighter than Hokkien mee. It tasted delicious while it is hot. The dish is quite addictive too as we can’t stop having it for several rounds.

Indo-styled Fried Chicken Wing @$16.00 (L)- Taste is ok only although it is cooked with stripped gingers to add up the taste. No much to rave about it but it would taste better when it is pipping hot as you can taste the crispiness of the skin.

Sambal Kang Kong @$12.00 (L) does not taste spicy as it looks. It taste as same standard as other zi char stalls as well.

Omelette with prawns @S$9.00 (L) . It taste same as normal zi char stall.

Calamari / Fried Sotong @S$10.00 (S) tasted crispy as it looks. You need to have it while it is hot and dipped them with the ready served mayonnaise. It can be addictive once you start having it while it is still crispy.

If you wish to give it a try, you may want to avoid peak hours especially weekends and also night time. Although the signature bee hoon was highly recommended, I will not queue for more than 15 minutes for it.
