I couldn't say that Pepenero's traditional Italian fare blew me away; it was more than commendable for sure, but it was likely to get lost in a sea of about a million decent Italian restaurants in our little red dot; I found it difficult to pinpoint a distinguishing uniqueness that would make Pepenero an unforgettable standout.
Service was earnest, but can get a tad choppy, due to its lean staffing. Even so, Pepenero manages to exude a quiet charm.
We had
1) Burrata ($42 for 300gm): massive dome of gorgeous cheese, set atop an arugula bed, and paired with juicy cherry tomatoes and pink sashes of Parma Ham (additional $10). This may be a smidge too much for two persons, we struggled to finish this.
2) Risotto ($26): fat carnaroli grains bursting with the essence of porcini and accented with white truffle. I love how generous Pepenero is with its mushrooms.
3) Grigliata ($38): a platter of white fish, half a Boston lobster tail, tiger prawns, scallop, mussel, squid, and asparagus, all grilled to perfection. I particularly enjoyed the squid, smoky, and soft.
4) Cioccolata ($16) - chocolate lava cake with vanilla gelato: excellent and nuanced

Li Bai is one of our go-to restaurants for classically conservative Cantonese fare that's exquisite and consistently flawless. Ditto for the personable service. Attentive without the intrusion, efficient without the stuffiness.
We love:
1) Roasted Pork & Barbecued Meat Combination ($36) comprising roasted duck, barbecued pork, and roasted pork, with a side of marinated jellyfish: Everything on this plate was luscious, flavourful to the bone, and absolutely scrumptious.
2) Hot & Sour Soup ($12): a velvety concoction abundant with fresh scallops, prawns, sea cucumber, fish maw, and mushrooms
3) Wintermelon Thick Soup ($15): choc-a-bloc with sweet chunks of crabmeat, conpoy, silken beancurd, and egg drop.
4) Baked Canadian Cod ($18 per portion): glazed with ophiopogon root and honey for a bitter-sweet contrast, and served with poached kailan and pinenuts for a little crunch.
5) Chinese-Styled Pan-Fried Fillet Steak ($15 per portion): Imbued with a wonderful smoky char, and burnished with an oyster-based sauce, this was tender and juicy.
6) Braised Spinach Beancurd ($20 per portion): silky and soft, drenched in an opulent conpoy-enoki gravy

Although a relative newbie in the hawker scene, Mr & Mrs Mohgan's Super Crispy Roti Prata have been consistently ranked as one of the top roti prata vendors in Singapore. Manned by the gentle, soft-spoken couple whose eponymous stall is distinguished by its unabating lines, you're happy to wait in a stuffy, old-school coffeeshop that's as dank as it is rank. Because you're ultimately rewarded for your sweaty efforts with a heaping plate of the best prata I've had in a very long time.
I'm partial to Egg Prata ($1.40), and these were beautifully crispy, torched with a golden hue, while fluffy and chewy inside. What's most surprising, however, was how little ghee and oil was used; there was hardly a trace of oil left on the plate when I was done.
The default curry accompanying pratas is the Dhal Cha, a thick, beany yellow lentil-based curry that the chilli-averse will likely take to. Should you prefer a more meaty or spicier curry, there's the fish or the mutton.

We had their Weekend Brunch Trolley ($59++ without alcohol). The decidedly limited array kept the quality of the brunch high, and because everything was in petite portions, we really could partake of everything. Also, the long gaps between the trolleys helped encourage the slow food movement thing that the French are so famous for; we actually took the time to graze over a languid brunch.
Favourites are:
1) Croque Monsieur, a fantastic crusty baguette slathered with an excellent fruit jam, gruyere, mustard, and meaty ham. I got seconds of this.
2) Salmon Quiche: exceptional, with a meltingly buttery crust, beautiful caramelization, and a lusciously cheesy filling.
3) Homemade Baked Beans with smokey French bacon topped with a sous vide egg, and a drizzle of citrus oil: Exquisite stuff.
4) Poulet Roti - a whole organic chicken seasoned with herbed butter and roasted to juicy perfection, then sprinkled with golden almond flakes, and herbed cous cous
5) Blue Mussels & Clams simply steamed with white wine, Swiss chard, and fennel cream: fresh and sweet; we drank this like a soup
6) Roast Pork Collar blanketed in a glorious mustard cream sided by buttered local vegetables
7) Desserts like Creme Brulee and Crepe Suzette
Not so much:
1) Seafood Croquette and Salmon Mousse: wasn't my thing
2) Squid was a moreish contrast, chewy rings topped off a crusty buttered bread.
3) Flatiron Steak, torched with a gorgeous char: a perfect, consistent shade of pink but they laced this with Chimichurri

Burnt Ends makes the barbecue an exquisite affair. You wouldn't expect barbecued fare to be this polished, but Burnt Ends' mastery of the grill is inimitable. Prices are a little steep, considering the tapas-portions of most dishes, but well worth it.
Service was extraneously amiable and chipper in attitude, as Burnt Ends doesn't charge for service. And because the menu was impossibly succinct, scant almost, the staff's fair grasp of the menu helped inform our choices.
We had:
1) Smoked Quail Egg ($15 each) - topped with caviar: the minuscule mouthful costs a pretty penny, but wow was this glorious. I finally get why caviar is prized as a delicacy. These inky black pearls lent a plush briny counterpoint to the nuanced smokiness of the perfectly soft quail's egg. An absolute can't miss.
2) Tomato Toast & Lardo ($18): looked rustic but was exquisite. The blobs of tomatoes, lightly torched on the grill, were bursting with an incredible sweetness.
3) Beef and Mustard ($18): my favourite version of beef tartare ever. It was clear and refreshing, the bite of the mustard restrained the rounded body of the beef.
4) Burnt Ends' Sanger ($20) with pulled pork shoulder, coleslaw, chipotle aioli, and melty cheese sandwiched between a pillowy sesame seeded brioche bun: to-die-for. Best pulled pork burger I've ever had in my life. In fact, best burger I've had in a long time. I'm still dreaming about it.
5) W.A. Marron ($90) accented with kombu and gilded with tobiko beurre blanc and chives: sumptuous and succulent.
6) Onglet ($35.10 for 150gm at $26/100gm) topped with burnt onion and slathered in the most divine marrow jus: Decadent and heart palpitatingly sinful but so wonderfully superb.
 
Spending per head: Approximately $140(Dinner)
