Chinese food Smile Aug 27, 2013

Canton Paradise never fails for their affordable Chinese dishes, and of course the efficient service. I was told that I had to queue 45mins for a table of 4, so after getting my queue number, I waited outside and was looking through the menu and ticking what I want from the order form. To my surprise, just after 15mins, I got a table!!

Ordered around 7 to 8 dishes but we were too hungry so here's some snapshots of what we ate and what I think is nice! The Xiao long bao ($4.80 per basket, 4 XLBs) were quite good, it came steaming hot! Make sure to eat it almost immediately for a nicer taste! Personally, I also like the Fried Beans with minced pork and olive ($11.80), the beans were crunchy and nicely fried with the pork. Looking for something spicy on the menu? Try wanton with chilli oil ($5.80)! It's actually a little spicy for a person like me who doesn't take much chilli. The chilli oil is inside the wanton, not in the sauce. Service was really efficient! Our food came after 5 mins of ordering.

We ended up overeating because we ordered too much food. Initially we ordered egg tarts as well but thankfully they ran out of it (and it's just the start of dinner). Also ordered 4 bowls of rice plus 2 barleys and 2 watercress honey (if you like watercress, you must try!). Total bill came up to $90!

Mixed rice Smile Aug 25, 2013

Ordered the spinach, char siew, sweet & sour pork and 2 bowls of rice for $8.60. The pork was just freshly cooked from kitchen, you can taste the crunchiness in the outer layer. The sweet and sour sauce was nicely blend, it wasn’t too sour or sweet, the taste is just nice. The char siew is pretty normal like those you get from chicken rice or char siew stall. The spinach was my personal favourite! It was fried using garlic and dried shrimps. I would strongly recommend this to spinach lovers out there! You can always ask for curry sauce or the dark sauce gravy. The curry is great as it isn't too spicy, good for people who have low tolerance of spicy food!

A cup of exotic coffee Smile Aug 19, 2013

Categories : American | Coffee

After our breakfast, my friends and I went to Starbucks to get some coffee fix! This Starbucks at RWS is different from all other Starbucks in Singapore as it sells coffee that are made from more exotic beans. I thought that it would be quite expensive to have a cup of coffee made from these exotic beans, however, the price range is about the same as a cup of normal Starbucks coffee. I love the vintage feel of the storefront, feels like I'm in a different country and makes me want to go in and explore! It's located on the first level at the Forum.

A close up of the menu for the reserve coffee, in case you think I'm kidding you that it's the same price as normal coffee.

We ordered the Guatemala Finca Los Caballitos, Pour Over type @ $6.50 after some recommendations from the cashier. Difference between pour over and French press? I'm not sure too, pour over as the name suggests, it's just pouring hot water (of a certain temperature) over a piece of filter paper with the coffee powder on it. French press is like pressing coffee taste out from the powder. So one is press, one is pour.

The friendly barista was showing and telling us how she actually made the coffee. We didn't really follow on what she was saying because we were too fascinated in looking at the process, from the coffee machine generating the powder from coffee beans to the pouring process where the coffee drips down from a "hole" in the cup that's above the cup meant for us. She also advised us how we should go about drinking it. She got us to try the first sip before deciding whether we want to add milk accordingly. It was quite bitter so we asked for milk and sugar to taste. The original taste of the coffee tastes like a milder version of black coffee and with a very light tinge of sourness. The barista told us that we're supposed to taste some lemon but we aren't coffee connoisseurs so we didn't really taste that.

If you want a more novel and personal coffee experience, why not head down to this special reserve store? smile

Smoked duck pasta Smile Aug 31, 2013

Categories : Fusion | Pasta

I walked past there at around 6pm and surprisingly there was no one at all. So my friend and I were the first customers. I didn't like it that the lights were so dimly lit (around that time) and it sort of affected my mood for dinner already.

I shared the mushroom soup with my friend and it tasted not too bad! I love the garlic bread though, it's nicely toasted smile I ordered the creamy smoked duck spaghetti ($10.50) and as a person who does not like/eat creamy based pasta frequently, I must say this one at 49 seats is really not bad. I didn't feel sick of it after a few mouthfuls, which is a good sign that this is a good cream-based pasta. The only grip I had about this dish was that the amount of duck meat was too little and my pasta was too much.

The interior of the café wasn't too bad, but as I mentioned earlier, there wasn't much lighting when I was there and I didn't like the metal chairs also. But we had friendly service from the staff!

Truffle heart Smile Aug 25, 2013

truffle heart

truffle heart

At Max Brenner, it’s mostly chocolate stuff on the menu, so actually there's not too much variations. So you have to at least like eating chocolate. Anyway, we didn’t know what to choose also, every item looks expensive so we ended up ordering one only. Truffle Heart consists of a chocolate lava cake and a chocolate shake. It’s not really a lava cake that the chocolate oozes out from inside, but more like you do the pouring of the chocolate over the cake yourself! The bottle thing contains the thick chocolate to be poured over the cake. The cake was warm and so it felt really nice to eat it. However, it’s expensive in my opinion, we paid around $18. Definitely not for one person to eat because you can get sick of it after a while.

Although we were seated outside, as soon as the staff saw us waving for their attention, they came to us. Plain water is complimentary.
