Samsui chicken Smile Aug 11, 2013

Categories : Chinese Soup

My friends and I decided to settle dinner at The Soup Restaurant, where the famous plate of chicken reigns. I’ve seen it far too many times on instagram but I haven’t tried it. Anyway we got a table quite fast because I think it’s quite late. I love the Chinese, vintage feel of the place! I didn’t order anything off the menu, my friends were the one deciding what to order because they always eat there!

We had the Samsui Ginger Chicken (Small, $15.90). The big one costs $30+. But there’s only 4 of us, so the small one is enough! So happy to be eating this, it’s my first time eating it. At first when it came, I thought, “it's just ordinary chicken, but why so many people always order it.” It comes with a plate of vegetables. WHY? It’s for you to wrap it with the chicken, ginger and cucumber. You can of course choose to omit any of the last 2 but the chicken is mandatory! I’m not a fan of ginger, but my friend said that it’s nicer to put ginger with it. For my first wrap, I ate it with only a little bit of ginger and then I know what she meant by putting more ginger. So for my second wrap, I put half a teaspoon of ginger, and it’s really good. The crunchiness, cold and refreshing taste of the vegetable is such a good combination with the ginger. If you must know, the ginger doesn’t taste like the ginger we usually eat, it has a milder ginger and less raw taste though.

They ordered Claypot Tofu (Small, $8). Despite it being small portion and just $8, we all ate 2-3 pieces of the tofu. But it’s abit sweet for me though.

I cannot pass up vegetables! So for the veg, we got Ah Kon Fan Shu Leaves (Small, $8.90). The sambal was of the right spiciness for us and it tasted really nice and appetising!

They also ordered this Steamed San Yu Fish Slice ($10.90). It is sliced fish steamed with ginger and nice soy sauce! I think it’s quite nice, very generous amount of sliced fish for $10.90!

Verdict: In total we paid $57.60 for all! Not seen in photos are the FOC soup that we got because we paid via OCBC card, our 4 plates of rice ($0.80 each). Plain water is free! I think for around $14 each, the meal is quite reasonable. The dishes were all nice and we didn’t have to wait very long for it. What left a deep impression on me was the chicken. It’s a must try!! Soup restaurant: affordable Chinese cuisine with good atmosphere. Service was quite good too, all the staff were efficient!

chicken curry Smile Aug 05, 2013

I always head to yoshinoya if I'm eating alone or just looking for a quiet and peaceful place to have my meals. Yoshinoya serves healthier food compared to other fast food restaurants and it's great for a family hang-out as well. There's kids meal available too! Great for the whole family. In fact when I was there just now, I saw 4 families.

Just recently, Yoshinoya came up with a new dish, Salmon/Chicken with Japanese Curry! Was tempted to get the student meal because it's cheaper, but wanted to try something new so I tried Chicken curry ($7.90)! It comes with miso soup. You can choose to top up $1 for a drink but I did not.

The curry was quite good during the first few mouthfuls but I realised that the curry is quite spicy, different from the normal Japanese curry we usually eat. My tolerance of spicy food is not very high, so I advise people who can't take spicy food to not choose this. Otherwise, the chicken was nicely grilled, which is healthier than it being deep fried. The curry had onions, cabbage and diced carrots! The miso soup was rather bland but healthy!

Economic rice Smile Aug 05, 2013

Decided to try something else at this kopitiam instead of the ban mian which I usually eat. My friend and I ordered based on 2 persons and we shared 4 dishes with 2 plates of rice. We ordered kang kong, potato, stir fried pork and steamed egg plus some curry as the sauce (not sure if the curry is chargeable as it's just the sauce to pour over our rice) and it costs $6.60 together with the rice.

The curry was not very nice, it's quite oily so we skimmed away the oil on the surface. The kangkong was nice! It's not the spicy kind, just the normal one stirred fried with garlic. The pork was just so-so only. It didn't have much meat. The steamed egg was smooth and silky to taste, the potato was great too! The amount of rice given was very generous that we were bloated after that. And we also ordered too much for 2 person.

And it was good that it wasn't crowded during lunch time! We get to enjoy our meal in peace.

Vietnamese! Smile Aug 05, 2013

Categories : Vietnamese

I actually ate Vietnamese food the day before but still craving for it because I really love the soup for Pho! Sour, yet sweet and salty, inexplicable taste. We queued for 10-15mins and we were given the high table and chairs. Inconvenient? Not really, they have hooks underneath the table to hook up your bags! Really thoughtful design.

We ordered a Vietnamese Spring Roll ($4.90) which was actually called “Fresh Southern Rolls with Sweet Shrimps, Egg, Fresh Herbs” and we took quite awhile to find it on the menu due to the unique name! I didn’t find the spring roll exceptional but just the normal Vietnamese spring rolls you can find in food courts, but remember to dip it with the peanut sauce for a more exceptional taste!

I ordered Pho Beef Steak Slices ($8.90), was so tempted to get the Wagyu Beef Slices one or just add a piece of wagyu beef ($2.50) but decided not to. The soup’s abit oily though. Taste of the dish was okay, I love the soup! The sour taste of it just whets the appetite. The beef slices weren't really cooked when it first came and it appeared reddish but I let it simmer in the soup for around 5 minutes. Likewise, I didn’t find it exceptional but I still love Vietnamese food! There's quite a wide array of sauces around the table so you can just choose what sauces your want to dip your food with!

Bailey's Choc Chip Smile Aug 05, 2013

Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

The Daily Scoop at sunset way is quite out of the way and I only went there because my friend was driving and we wanted a quiet place for desserts! But the place was quite crowded on a Friday night despite being in a far off and quieter part of Singapore.

After trying some flavours, decided to go for something more unique, Bailey's Choc Chip. Don't be surprised if you don't see the some flavours of ice cream being displayed. But if the name of the ice cream is displayed, it means that the flavour is available! Don't be shy to ask to try smile I think they have too many flavours, not enough space to display all the tubs.

Bailey's Choc Chip has alcohol content and usually that's what I go for in an ice cream. This did not disappoint me at all as the bailey's weren't very strong and the ice cream isn't too sweet as well. I got one scoop ($3.50) to share with my friend. Alternatively, if you prefer to have smaller scoops so you can order more flavours, you can get the junior scoop ($2.20).
