According to San pellegrino and Acqua Panna's 50 best restaurants in Asia, Shinji by Kanesaka is the best sushi place outside of Japan. It's awesome! Prices at dinner are a bit steep but lunch, at $75 for the 9-piece Hana set (includes appetizer, some extra's, maki, egg cake, dessert) is actually very good value if you compare to, for example, Tsukiji's famous Sushi Dai which is about $65 anyway.

The service here is impeccable and I also liked how jovial the mood is among the diners and the chefs. It makes the eating experience so much more pleasant.

Overall, if you are a sushi or japanese food lover you owe it to yourself to come here at least once! Try one lunch and if you're convinced then only splurge for the omakase's.

Many top-end restaurants in the City have prohobitive Dinner prices while serving up a surprisingly affordable weekday Lunch menu. Aoki's lunch sets start at $30, so if you're in the mood for some quality Japanese (primarily sushi) but don't want to break the monthly food budget, their lunch is definitely a steal.

We tried the Nigiri Sushi Tokusen ($50) which comes with chawanmushi, 8 nigiri, one maki and tamagoyaki and the Mazechirashi ($35). Both orders come with dessert included.

Sushi is good, although you get it all on one platter instead of getting it served one by one. The star of the afternoon is definitely the chirashi though, which is about 2 parts assorted fish, salmon roe, creamy uni and egg to 1 part rice. Would definitely come back multiple times for this.

Considering that you could easily eat up a bill much higher at other subpar chains like Sushi Tei, Aoki's lunch is terrific value and definitely highly recommended.

Okinawa has a different history from the rest of Japan - they are descended from the Ryukyu kingdom - and hence their culture, arts, and even their food differs from the rest of the country.

These differences are fairly noticeable when dining in Nirai Kanai. It's located on the basement of Liang Court and the menu is sort of like a Chinese style "rice and dishes" communal dining.

Food's overall quite good - we especially liked the Buta Kakuni / Rafute (Simmered Pork Belly). Free flow Japanese short grain rice, as well! Expect to pay $20-$40 per person depending on how much you order and eat.

For full review and photos please visit http://look-see-eat.blogspot.sg/2013/07/jamies-italian-now-open-in-vivocity.html

Singapore has so many fine dining restaurants (7 out of the latest Miele Guide's Top 20 restaurants in Asia) and so many celebrity chef outlets. Most of these are extremely expensive; so it's great that Jamie Oliver's latest entry in Vivocity is much more accessible at about $30-$40 per person.

What I like most is that the cooking and service standards aim to be fine-dining, but without the price and the pretentiousness. I love the about 30-foot-long open kitchen where you can watch the chef walk up and down and "encourage" his cooks. Like watching Hell's Kitchen.

The food is overall very solid and very good; although some dishes like the Crispy Squid I guess we are used to a more strongly seasoned with salt and pepper, etc.

Jamie's Italian is located in vivocity 1st floor along that stretch of restaurants facing Sentosa Island. Non halal.

Each of Keisuke Takeda's ramen restaurants focuses on a different broth type. As the name suggests, this outlet specializes in Tonkotsu Ramen.
Tonkotsu Ramen

Tonkotsu Ramen

The regular Tonkotsu ramen is sublime. Porky, tasty broth with nice noodles and well cooked soft boiled egg, which is absolutely let down by the tough and dry cha shu. The spicy black is the same ramen with some chili, burnt garlic and other add-ons that, in my opinion, pushes the sodium content into overload territory.

You also get free flow bean sprouts and hard boiled (unflavored) eggs.

Highly recommended although not perhaps on a rainy day as it's an outdoor walk from the MRT station to Orchid hotel.
