JAAN was ranked 17th best in Asia and 5th best in SG in this year's edition of Asia's 50th best restaurants.
The view from the 70th floor is awesome in the day time and probably even better at night. Service is friendly and courteous without being intrusive, and the wait staff are knowledgeable about the dishes, ingredients, etc.

We went for the 5-course degustation lunch (normal menu + herbivore/vegetarian menu). Food is overall very, very good, and we were particularly impressed by the vegetarian option and his extremely clever usage of non-meat products to still tease the palatte.

Not all is perfect, though. I thought some dishes were a bit 'busy,' as in too many individual bites on the same plate competing for attention rather than a single coherent dish. Pricey as well, but not more so than any other restaurant in this price range.

Please visit here for full review and photos of all 20+ courses: http://look-see-eat.blogspot.sg/2013/12/singapores-best-omakase-sushi-shinji-by.html

Two weeks ago I reviewed the $75, 9-piece sushi lunch set and concluded it was the best sushi in Singapore and hence was insanely good value. Today let's look at the Omakase, which at $250 is more than triple the price for some additional sashimi and cooked dishes.

For lunch, we get different appetizers and desserts, and a grand total of 3 sashimi courses, 3 cooked dishes, half a tomato, 10 nigiri sushi and 1 maki.

The sushi is, of course, sublime, especially the shari (rice) which is the best I've ever eaten anywhere in the world including Japan.

The cooked dishes have some hits and some misses, so aren't all that great.

Considering the price differentials, it's hard to recommend the Omakase over the 'regular' lunch sets; however if you're in the mood for the absolute best the restaurant can offer, you won't be disappointed.

According to San pellegrino and Acqua Panna's 50 best restaurants in Asia, Shinji by Kanesaka is the best sushi place outside of Japan. It's awesome! Prices at dinner are a bit steep but lunch, at $75 for the 9-piece Hana set (includes appetizer, some extra's, maki, egg cake, dessert) is actually very good value if you compare to, for example, Tsukiji's famous Sushi Dai which is about $65 anyway.

The service here is impeccable and I also liked how jovial the mood is among the diners and the chefs. It makes the eating experience so much more pleasant.

Overall, if you are a sushi or japanese food lover you owe it to yourself to come here at least once! Try one lunch and if you're convinced then only splurge for the omakase's.

Many top-end restaurants in the City have prohobitive Dinner prices while serving up a surprisingly affordable weekday Lunch menu. Aoki's lunch sets start at $30, so if you're in the mood for some quality Japanese (primarily sushi) but don't want to break the monthly food budget, their lunch is definitely a steal.

We tried the Nigiri Sushi Tokusen ($50) which comes with chawanmushi, 8 nigiri, one maki and tamagoyaki and the Mazechirashi ($35). Both orders come with dessert included.

Sushi is good, although you get it all on one platter instead of getting it served one by one. The star of the afternoon is definitely the chirashi though, which is about 2 parts assorted fish, salmon roe, creamy uni and egg to 1 part rice. Would definitely come back multiple times for this.

Considering that you could easily eat up a bill much higher at other subpar chains like Sushi Tei, Aoki's lunch is terrific value and definitely highly recommended.

Do visit here for full review and photos: http://look-see-eat.blogspot.sg/2013/09/okinawan-cuisine-at-nirai-kanai-liang.html

Okinawa has a different history from the rest of Japan - they are descended from the Ryukyu kingdom - and hence their culture, arts, and even their food differs from the rest of the country.

These differences are fairly noticeable when dining in Nirai Kanai. It's located on the basement of Liang Court and the menu is sort of like a Chinese style "rice and dishes" communal dining.

Food's overall quite good - we especially liked the Buta Kakuni / Rafute (Simmered Pork Belly). Free flow Japanese short grain rice, as well! Expect to pay $20-$40 per person depending on how much you order and eat.
