Lor Mee Smile Mar 20, 2013

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Hawker Centre | Noodles

Was quite surprised that the stall is still open during dinner hours (last time it used to open only in the morning till late afternoon) so I decided to settle my dinner with a bowl of pipping hot lor mee. I used to not like lor mee at all cos there's this weird taste and smell but ever since I first try 178 lor mee years ago, I start to change my view of this dish.

The difference between 178 lor mee and other lor mee outside is that their gravy is not as thick. It is smooth and light instead. a bowl of $3 lor mee comes with a few slices of meat and also their signature fried shark meat. serving wise was big and filling.

For me i love to add a lot of dark vinegar and chili to spice up the this dish.

comfortable enough. Smile Mar 15, 2013

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Restaurant | Steamboat/Hot Pot

Last minute decision to visit this place for a steamboat dinner. It was empty when we reached and was usher to a spacious 4 seats table. The shop is empty, except for 2 or 3 table of customer inside thus it wasn't as noisy as other steamboat shops (until a group of 10 students came in towards to end of our meal...)

Get to choose 2 soup base (as usual, the yuan yang style) and of cos we chose one signature laksa broth and the other the herbal soup base. Service was fast for the steamboat ingredients and they was place nicely in a large plate, good enough for the amount of people dining. Waited a bit for the fried food, which I get to know why. The kitchen staff will only fried it after it was being ordered, to ensure that these food and being served hot. How considerate they are, rather than fried a huge pot of it, cool it at a corner and served it when the customers order it. Definitely a huge plus point for me. Thumbs up for their prawn paste chicken wings - juicy and well marinated. Same goes to their fried mantou, samosa and beancurd too!

Their steamboat ingredients are the usual stuff - mixture of meat, seafood, veggies and Yong Tau Foo. Like their stuffed taupok though, after dipping them into the laksa broth. The meat however, was a little disappointment for me as they are rolled up and freeze - makes it difficult to "unroll" it back to the usual sliced one and after being cooked in the soup, the meat will become tough to chew. The chicken however, is thawed before served.

I like the herbal chicken broth aftermath - tasted sooo good (though salty) and it was one of the better one I had. The laksa broth however, was way too salty so after awhile I actually stop eating ingredients which is being cooked inside there.

There are only 3 waitresses on shift that night. It wasn't very packed so service was prompt. Guess because it was weekday night? Wonder if the service will be that fast if the restaurant is packed with people during weekends.

Think they had increases the price per person to $23.80++ instead of $20.80++. Drinks are excluded in the buffet list and each can of drinks is sold at $1.80 each.

Will definitely be back again for more steamboat!

very Q meepok! Smile Mar 14, 2013

Amoy Street Food Centre is one of the food centre (or how we locals say, hawker centre) in Singapore where you get to try all sort of local food in just one stop. Amoy Food Centre offer more than 100 stalls of delicacies, be it on the ground floor or the second floor, it will be difficult for you to find a place to enjoy a meal during peak hour, so you gotta be early in order to "chop" the seats.

Was there due to work purpose and was so spoil for choices, so I just follow the queue and crowd for this fish ball noodle - Ah Ter's Fishball Noodle. Ordered the small bowl of mee pok dry at $3.50, comes with 2 handmade fish balls, minced meat, fish dumpling and some fishcake. The meepok is one of the best I had - very very Q and not soggy nor lumpy like how many noodles tends to be after it is being cooked. Their fishball is good, too, and 1 bite of it and u will know it is really handmade and not frozen kind. The soup is very tasty too, without feeling thirsty after I drank the whole bowl.

Now I know why it always attract such a long queue as compared to the other stalls selling the same thing. Definitely recommending it!

really good prawn mee. Smile Mar 08, 2013

I love the soup base of this prawn mee as it is boiled with fresh ingredients and is has little (or no) MSG because I don't feel thirsty after finishing the whole bowl of soup. With $4, you can choose from any starch available (Kuey Tiao, Yellow Noodle, Bee Hoon or even Mee Pok if I remember correctly) to go with the generous serving of fresh solid prawns (4 in total) and 2 pieces of pork ribs. Or if you are not a fan of pork ribs or want to save money, you can order the $3 portion which switch the pork ribs to 3 meat balls instead.

The stall owners are really very friendly, smiling at you when you place your order, really make your day with this kind gesture.

Try their dry version of the prawn mee and ask for extra chili powder if you are a fan of chili, you will not be disappointed!

Soya milk! Smile Mar 08, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

Teck Seng Soya Bean Milk is easily to spot among all the stalls in Tiong Bahru Market - at the look of their queue. I didn't know why the queue is long compared to other stalls who is selling the same thing - soya bean milk and dao huay so I decided to join in the queue and order myself a cup of cold soya bean milk. After a sip, I know why it is popular because it tasted really good! The soya bean taste is strong and not diluted even though I ordered the one with ice. So as to say if one is to order the warm/hot soya milk, the taste would be much more better. I also realized that the stall sell only soya bean milk and dao huay, and also chin chow and nothing else, so I guess the stall owners really concentrate on what they selling and that is why it tasted so good.

Will be back to try their "black n white" (soya bean milk + chin chow) since I think it is one of their signature dish.
