I remember fondly the days in my youth where I would spent loads of time gallivanting around Somerset. The teenage boy's tri-factor was ever so outstanding there - LAN gaming, Pool or Movies. And the good food! I was just all over Botak Jones back then.

It's with a heavy heart that I write this review, recognizing that those days might just remain memories after my latest visit just last week.

Everything looks the same but different. I ordered my favourite combo of Cajun Chicken Breast with 2 sides of Spicy Fries and Baked Cheese Potato.
Cajun Chicken w/ fries & baked cheese potato

Cajun Chicken w/ fries & baked cheese potato

To its credit, the Cajun Chicken still tasted pretty nice. A hefty piece of chicken breast not overly cooked that it's still moist - with melted cheese and a tangy Cajun sauce on top. The fries were ok, but the Baked Cheese Potato was a show stopper. Served now in a disposable plastic cup rather than on the plate as it was before, the potato was wet and soggy towards the centre and bottom of the cup, and the flavours just weren't there anymore.

The price difference was the pits though. A regular Cajun Chicken set would have set you back just $7.90 in the past, but now costs $10.30 after adding $0.80 for the Baked Cheese Potato.

It's just too bad that things turned out this way, but I wouldn't recommend Botak Jones or be back for a return visit anytime soon.

Korean Fried Chicken - NeNe..? Cry Aug 19, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | Fast Food | Halal | Korean Fried Chicken

While I was still reeling from the 4-fingered hurrah from 4 Fingers and their signature soy-garlic flavoured Korean-style fried chicken (KFC), there was a serious contender for the throne of best KFC in Singapore. Given how taken I was with the delectable flavours from 4 Fingers, I was both sceptical and excited at the same time. It was a #makanhunt to be made in any case.

NeNe Chicken at Star Vista isn't all that easy to find. A small shop housing around 20 seats at best is located along one of the smaller side alleys and indeed very easy to miss. The interior was simple, minimalistic - wooden table tops and flat bench chairs - spruced up by a cartoonish wall mural of light pastel colours that brought that touch of levity.

Food wise, $9.90 gets you a set meal at NeNe Chicken. A meal would include your choice of flavoured fried chicken, a packet of fries, a small drink and side of radish.

Swicy Chicken Set As recommended, I picked the Swicy - sweet and spicy - Chicken. Bummer. Despite how the chicken looked, it was by no means crunchy, the sweet and spicy glaze was more cloying than flavourful and did more to reduce the appeal of the chicken by making it mushy, rather than helping it along. The fries were better, skinny fries that were reminiscent of the A&W curly fries in the past.

My Verdict: Showdown of the Korean Fried Chicken was won hands down by 4 Fingers. Unless you like your fried chicken more glazed, then consider trying NeNe Chicken.

Fisherios ain't no place for fish Cry May 30, 2013

Categories : Seafood

Kiosks in the basement of shopping malls selling variations of Fish & Chips are quickly becoming a common sight. I've become fond of the Chippy's chain in particular - with their quick meal of Beer Batter Fish and Chips that has not yet failed to delight.

Fisherios has been at the basement of Takashimaya for a while. And I always thought that it was a pity not having the chance to try it.

That was until I tried it.

My order was for the pan-fried salmon dish. I'd just like the pictures I took to tell the story.

We've seen the advertisements for seafood restaurants touting lobsters bigger than a little girl. Maybe Fisherios should do something along those lines too. A piece of salmon shorter and not much thicker than my fork?! And $8.90 to boot?

Epic failure. Avoid at all costs if you are looking for a filling meal.

Dean & Deluca at Orchard Central is a combined cafe and grocery concept store iconic of New York culture and lifestyle. The expansive array of cooking implements and the availability of less common condiments, makes the grocery section a dream come true for casual home cooks or chef wannabes.

The cafe section is spick and span as well, offering a range of western staples including salads, pastas and entrees such as meat and fish. The food however, was kind of lacking in the taste department.

Nicoise Salad
Not being a raw vegetable person, I didn't really try much of the salad, so I would just withhold my opinion here.

Lagsana al Forno
Very disappointing indeed. The layers of pasta sandwiching beef bolognese just turned out mushy. The beef was just too pasty to give any form of texture.

US Choice Ribeye
It's a warning sign of sorts when you order Ribeye and you aren't asked for your choice of how you want your steak done. My ribeye was served nearly totally well-done, leaving the choice piece of meat dry in the mouth except for the sauce it was served with. The only redeeming factor was the charred edges which tasted nearly crispy.

Broiled Atlantic Salmon
Again disappointed with what I though was a safe choice of fish. The salmon wasn't cooked as long as it should have, with much of the insides nearly totally raw, to the extent of it affecting the taste of the cooked portions as well.

At $15 per pax and a place like Dean & Deluca, this standard was certainly not what I was expecting. I'd see myself shopping at the grocer soon enough, but the cafe is one place I'd definitely steer clear of.

Delicious Cafe is not delicious Cry Nov 01, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Restaurant | Steaks and Grills

This was probably a case of how curiosity killed the cat.. and its appetite.

Located at the newly renovated Scotts Square along Orchard Road, Delicious Cafe looked absolutely promising - a delightful decor, spruce and clean interiors and did I mention a promotion for a 50% discount for every 2 pasta ordered?

It did strike me weird that the gf and I were the only 2 customers during lunch hour on a Sunday in a restaurant along Orchard Road, but nonetheless we went about the exploration with gusto rivaling that of Christopher Columbus.

I ordered the recommended signature dish of Duck Confit Spaghetti with Sun dried Tomatoes and Coriander plus an additional side of Potato Munchkins, baked potato skins served with meat sauce, melted cheese and cheddar.

Both dishes arrived piping hot and smelling good, but that's probably around where all the compliments stop. My pasta was more mush than al dente, the duck not like any confit that I had tasted before and gave me instead strong vibes of roast duck meat from Chinese roast meat stalls. The ratio of ingredients was also appalling - there was nearly as much tomato strips as there was pasta!

If I thought to wash down the meal with some hearty potato skins, I thought wrong too. The meat sauce overpowered any other taste of the dish and it just reminded me of curry.

Just this one experience is enough for me to say Delicious Cafe is anything but..
