Categories : Hawker Centre | Chinese Soup

I don't really like mutton soup but I thought I'll give it a try to complete my hawker must-try food list. This time I ordered the Mutton Soup ($4, $5 portion available as well). The mutton soup has a very strong dosage of ginger and pepper - well if you like it that way you would love this, but I think I don't like it. The mutton meat can be considered tender. The portion size is reasonable for one person. Perhaps I'm not a very good gauge on how good/bad this is because it is not those that I'll voluntarily buy, but my friend commented that this mutton soup is not the usual hawker sort so maybe that's why it did not settle well with me.

I don't think I will recommend this to anyone... there are plenty of other choices around here.

Average mee pok noodles OK Sep 04, 2013

Chanced upon this place as I was working nearby. This coffee shop should be servicing people living or working around this area as it is quite secluded. I chose the standard mee pok Minced Meat Noodles ($5) that I usually eat. I think overall, the mee pok noodles is average and can be better. Perhaps I've gone around to eat too much mee pok Minced Meat Noodles that my palate becomes very picky when it comes to this dish.

I think all the components of this rendition of the mee pok Minced Meat Noodles almost but not-yet hit my imagined perfection of what it should be like. For example, the minced pork is tender but not chewy, not much of a bite to speak of. The meatballs are also a little forgettable, not bouncy at all even though it is tasty. The noodles were only slightly clumpy but still okay in general.

Could be better, but it was passable. Saw quite a few celebrities' pictures around the stall and perhaps that raised my expectations.

Yummy Fish Soup :)  OK Sep 04, 2013

Sometimes you don't need to go to high-end restaurants for delicious food... more so for a budget eater like me who loves cheap but rewarding food. This Fish Soup ($5) is really satisfying for a rainy day like yesterday. The broth is really hot, not really thick but it is savoury and tasty. I can taste the milky texture and also a bit of meaty taste in it. I think the ingredients are not really generous enough for two people to share but enough for just one. There was this fried fish skin (that's how it tastes like, not sure if it really is) inside that is quite interesting. The fish slices were a little hard though, feels like it was just recently defrosted and thrown in to heat up. Could do better but pretty good for $5 a meal. Wouldn't really recommend it though for a fish soup hunter, but if you are here and want to try it out/ feels like having fish soup ... it's not too bad.

The cleaning service at this hawker centre is satisfactory, they clean the tables with quite a bit of attention and ensure that it is clean for usage rather than just going through the duties.

Within LENAS/MOF OK Aug 31, 2013

This Amasoy outlet is located within LENAS/MOF area, but you can also order it without dining in there. I wanted to try this since forever but never got around to it... this one costs $2, a little more expensive than the usual ones.

Taste-wise, I think it is not sweet enough. Amasoy is supposedly the healthier choice, maybe that's why... but for a sweet tooth like me, I'm only concerned about the sweetness level. The texture is soft but doesn't have much of the melt-in-the-mouth feeling like Lao Ban's. Well comparison is definitely inevitable when they are essentially selling more or less the same thing!

I would say Amasoy is not as good as Lao Ban's and commands a higher price - thus not really worth it. But still works pretty well to satisfy any beancurd craving.

Good food, but too expensive OK Aug 16, 2013

I was particularly curious about Billy Bombers because I see it everywhere and yet I didn't manage to try it before. Check out Billy Bombers's menu - there are so many delicious-looking menu items to choose from.

Seafood Paradise Italiano Spaghetti ($13.90++): I really enjoyed this dish as the tomato-based sauce was very rich and sweet. The spaghetti was also cooked al dente and had a really good bite to it, tangling with juicy mussels, squid rings, prawns and tiny slices of dory. The only drawback was that the ingredients was not generous enough. There is also the choice of fettucine available.

Texas Crispy Chicken ($18.90): The chicken meat was tender and juicy on the inside, and crispy on the outside. From the first bite, you can tell that the oil used tasted fresh - and hence this is one of the rare fried chicken which I found was acceptable. The thick-cut fries was also fluffy on the inside. The honey mustard sauce complements the fries pretty well too, but I don't think it is necessary as the fries are adequate on their own. The salad was pretty awful due to its strange lukewarm temperature. The portion is also too small for its price.

Overall, I find that the food here is quite good but cannot really be justified by the prices. The service here is much better than restaurants of similar pricing though, with attentive servers from the moment of entry until I stepped out.
