Only yummy when fresh!  OK Jul 30, 2013

I wanted to buy only 4 donuts for dinner that day, but the staff recommended me to get 6 instead because they were having a buy 5 get 1 free promotion - which makes each of them around $1.40 on average. Well, why not! There are so many tantalizing flavours that I'm so spoilt for choice - I can now get all the flavours I like.

I would not recommend the chocolate rice donut because it might drop all over the ground. The strawberry cream donut is quite sour and sweet at the same time, and a little strange for me. I ate these three on the first night that I bought it, really yummy! smile

The next night I ate the remaining three (they were left in the fridge overnight) and they were hard and quite awful to eat. sad Well. Looks like they are best eaten fresh - and meant to be shared! Those are a lot of calories...

Edible but not spectacular OK Jul 30, 2013

Tasty Treats is probably one of the more eye-catching eateries at the top floor of Far East Plaza with its wider entrance and red walls. From the looks of it, it didn't seem as crowded as its neighbours Susan Chan or New Station Snack Bar, but who knows what it holds until you try.

So I did... with a safe bet of Sweet and Sour Chicken Rice ($4.50) to takeaway! On the overall, it was passable. The sauce was more sour than sweet, which is usually the case because to make it vaguely sweet you need to put a lot of sugar in it. I'm fine with sour or sweet versions, but a pity was that the sauce was too little to go with the rice. The vegetables also tasted half-cooked, like they have been boiled for a few seconds and plopped into my packet.

Could do better, but edible... and come 'on, it's pretty cheap at $4.50. But if you're willing to part that extra $0.50, trust me, you'll get a better deal at New Station Snack Bar for the same dish.

I held the thought that the food court in Lucky Plaza would be quite cheap (oh, the stereotyping) - but hey, no it isn't, really. On the contrary, it is very expensive if you were to compare it to normal food courts. The drinks here cost about $3 on average, or $2+ for a cup of soft drink. It is the ground for tourists to be preyed upon.

On another note, Asian Food Mall should be renamed as Phillipines Food Mall instead. They have all sorts of Filipino specialties including their dessert, Halo-Halo. You don't normally see that in your regular Kopitiam/ Food Junction/ Food Republic/ Kou Fu, do you?

After traveling around the food court for a few rounds, I decided that the Claypot Rice here looked the most appetizing... unfortunately it isn't too cheap. I ordered the Hotplate Beancurd Rice ($6).

Touted to be a MSG-free stall, after I saw the way they prepared my food, I am completely convinced. Because they drizzled a whole lot of soy sauce, dark sweet sauce and sesame oil - it is definitely MSG-free but seasoning and sauce spammage activity into my food. (Who needs MSG when you can have a reservoir of store-bought sauces?)

It didn't taste too different from what I can cook in the kitchen with some tinkering around... pretty disappointing actually, especially since the tofu wasn't the soft egg tofu I hoped it would be like in the usual tze char stalls. It was also wayyy too salty for normal human intake.

The canned vegetables sprinkled on the side didn't justify for its cost either. Not recommended - maybe something else would be better.

Super spicy laksa :'(  OK Jul 30, 2013

Categories : Desserts and Cakes

With my workplace just a five minutes walk away from Far East Plaza, the trove of cheap eats in Orchard, I just had to hunt every nook and cranny in that building for the best gastronomical finds. Isle Cafe sits at the first floor of Far East Plaza near the fountain.

I was having a massive laksa craving that week (which doesn't seem to end even after I ate bowls of laksa) and so I ordered one standard $3.50 laksa.

Whoa, don't be deceived by its innocent appearance... its coconut milk broth is extremely spicy I nearly died from it - and I haven't even mixed in the molehill of chilli at the side! Needless to say it was hard for me to enjoy it because I like non-spicy laksa :'( There was a lot of ingredients in there, most of it are processed food like luncheon meat, fishcake and taupoks.

I still love this laksa for its coconut milk taste and the white springy beehoon and the fully cooked egg that soaked up the gravy well ... but it is simply too spicy for me. How am I supposed to survive Katong 328 laksa?! This will definitely please people who adores spicy food.

The title says it all. My friend and I tried this small Oreo Milkshake at $2.80 (we had a 1-for-1 voucher for Oreo Milkshake so technically it was $1.40 each for us), and our first reaction after the first sip was that - "Isn't this Mcflurry?!"
It is essentially the same taste, except that it is less ice-creamy and more "fluid" and possible to be sucked up through the straw albeit a bit difficult to do so because it is very thick and viscous. I would only buy it only if I have the voucher, because I might as well be eating Mcflurry. The size is very small for the price too. Not value-for-money, but it might be more worth it for other flavours. Do not try the Oreo Milkshake unless you want to eat Mcflurry, well then it is much more clever to get it at McD for $2. Try other flavours instead! ;)

Only two or three tables at this outlet, usually people buy it to drink it on-the-go or for takeaway.
