Makan Hunt: Ssikkek Korean Grill OK Feb 20, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | Restaurant | Buffet | Korean BBQ

For some reason, having a meal at a Korean BBQ & Grill restaurant isn’t the most affordable thing out there. You’d expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $50 per pax, even if you’re dining with a big group! That’s why these days many are flocking to Ssikkek (pronounced as shik-kek) – as a buffet-style eatery it’s one of the cheapest places to get your Korean food fix.

Lunch is from 11.30am to 2.30pm, Monday to Friday only, at $16 per adult and $8 per child; dinner is from 5.30pm to 10pm Monday to Sunday, as well as public holidays, at $26 per adult and $18 per child – all this is inclusive of GST and free flow of soft drinks.

The buffet selection includes various types of meat, from the classics like pork belly to chicken sausages, sides like golden mushrooms and kimchi, cooked food such as spicy rice cakes and even a couple of fresh fruit choices.

We helped ourselves to at least 3 plates of pork belly, so there’s no prize for guessing what we’d recommend. We also loved the golden mushrooms, which were grilled to juicy perfection, as well as the marinated chicken BBQ. Unfortunately, the kimchi – a keystone ingredient – was way too acidic for us.

The Pelican Offers Fresh Seafood Smile Feb 06, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Bars/Lounges | Hotel | Seafood

For a seafood restaurant, the Pelican seems to be an odd name. What does a type of bird have to do with lobsters, crabs, and mussels, right? But for those of you who are not familiar with them, they actually represent a person’s homecoming. During the old days of seafarers and voyagers, the bird would symbolise their way back home after a long trip on the high seas.

What does one usually do when someone who’s been gone a long time has arrived? Well, of course some good ‘ol comfort food would be waiting for them. That’s how the concept of The Pelican Seafood Bar and Grill came about.

With the aim of recreating this experience today, diners will be spoilt for choice with a whole array of fresh seafood imported from all over the world (US, Canada, etc.). One good example is the Pelican Seafood Platter ($99/ serves 2 to 3 pax), which consists of raw oysters clams, Dungeness crab, poached prawns, steamed whole Maine lobster, marinated conch salad, and swordfish cerviche.

Every Friday night, most restaurants in Orchard seem to be so jam-packed that it’s hard to find a place where you can chill out with friends. Thankfully, Esmirada Group has introduced a new restaurant which can serve as your sanctuary when you want to have a relaxing dinner to welcome the weekend.

For a more fun dining experience, Amuse revolves around the idea of using small plates for their appetisers. But don’t mistake this for small portions for each dish is good enough for sharing with friends! Start with their bite-size appetisers which include the Salmon Tarte Flambe with sour cream and chives ($9), Beef Tartare Cone with horse radish mouse encased in filo pastry ($14), and the Chili Crab ‘Mantou’ Bun ($9).

Taste of Korea at BORNGA Smile Jan 09, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | Korean BBQ

There’s a new resto in town! Located in the newly-launched Star Vista at Buona Vista, BORNGA is Korea’s leading BBQ chain which has finally landed in Singapore. And just like all their outlets which we have grown to love in Korea, China, United States, and Indonesia, renowned chef and owner Jong Won Paik said that their newest branch brings to Singapore “an authentic Korean dining experience that is akin to dining in any of our restaurants around the world.”

Those who have tried BORNGA would be pleased to know that the signature favourite, Woo Samgyup, is included in the menu. What makes these thinly-sliced beef so special is its secret marinade and unique dressing which retains the meat’s colour yet enhances its traditional ‘bulgogi’ taste. For maximum taste, go and try it with the Woo Samgyup sauce which is especially imported from Korea. Another popular dish worth ordering at BORNGA is the Chadol Duenjang Jjigae, a Korean beef stew which is made with rich soybean paste.
