I am a fan of sergeant Kiang and its chicken rice. I started eating his chicken rice even before he sold its brand name to the Food Republic. I ordered a basic chicken rice when i was there at the Food Republic food court. The taste of the chicken was not as fragrant and tender as before. I was given the breast part and it tasted rather dry. The taste of the rice has lack the robust flavor and the texture was a bit too grainy to my liking. The chilli did not taste as nice as before too as the spiciness is not as distinctive. Importantly, it is rather pricey with a rather small portion given.Lastly, i have got a good news to share. Sergeant Kiang, the founder of Sergeant Hainanese Chicken Rice has reopened his chicken rice stall at HOUGANG 1 about a week ago.

The place did have a renovation and a few stalls were added and look much interesting than before. I walked around thrice and don't know what should I settled for as there were a couple of food that I wanted to eat. Finally I had the curry chicken noodle instead, it was nice and thick and the chicken were tender. The portion was small and at $5 a bowl. I enjoyed it. Yum...

Sergeant Hainanese Chicken Rice is founded by Sergeant Jiang before it was sold to the owner of food republic food court. And now, you gotta see this particular brand of chicken rice in every food republic food court not only in Singapore but in Hong Kong and Taiwan too. Sergeant Jiang used to be their Consultant in supervising the preparation of chicken, rice and its condiments but he left to start his very own Jiang JI Hainanese Chicken Rice at Havelock Road a couple of months ago. And since the standard of the Sergeant Hainanese Chicken Rice has dropped significantly. It is still good if you are gonna compare it to a below average plate of chicken rice or if you have never eaten it when Sergeant Jiang still around. Chicken is still tender and juicy but the rice is not as fragrant as before. The chilli and garlic sauce did not taste as nice as before as well. The portion is always little for rice and chicken, it might not be able to fill up your stomach if you happen to be extremely hungry on that particular day.
