Finally I got to try the famous Tian Tian Chicken rice that beat Gordan Ramsay in the cooking challenge. The chicken were really moist and juicy and smooth which was really nice. The rice was a tad bit too oily for my taste though, and I wish they had some ginger to accompany the meal. I prefer the chicken rice at Far East Plaza but still, Tian Tian is not bad. Prepare to queue as many people will line up for it even before lunch hour starts.

I must be one of the last Singaporeans standing on this island trying the famous Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice. The waiting time is almost ten minutes, much longer than expected... but they say good things are worth waiting, so I shall. At $3.50 for a plate of their signature chicken rice, it is the average pricing for most hawker stalls.

So... the verdict? The first impression was that Tian Tian is definitely above average but not exactly as godly as it has always been described to be. Perhaps I couldn't withdraw my stratospheric expectations for this award-winning and widely acclaimed best chicken rice. The rice is very fragrant on its own already but a little too oily for me - the drizzling of the sesame oil was a little overkill. The chicken itself was good - tender and succinct. Their chilli sauce is different from the usual, I could taste a little tangy taste in it - lemon, maybe - and it is powerfully packed with a lot of chilli padi! Not for the faint-hearted. An 8/10 for chicken rice, my favourite remains to be the one at Redhill Food Centre.

When I saw the queue was short, I decided to order a plate of chicken rice.

The Chicken meat looked quite fatty and tasted quite tender, even the breast meat also tasted tender. Unlike other chicken rice stalls whereby the breast meat was too rough to eat. There was a thick layer of fats under the chicken skin and when eaten with the chicken meat, it tasted very yummy.

The rice was yellowish and was quite fragrant. The taste of the rice was a bit too oily and tasted of chicken oil.

Overall, if not for the long queue, I would have my Chicken Rice meal at Tian Tian everytime I dine there.

Chicken rice: It only costs $3.5, which is relatively cheaper than other restaurants in the town. The chicken meat is tender with all the bones removed and is rather juicy.
However, the taste is quite plain and mediocre

Rice: Even the rice has more intense taste than the chicken!
It is moist and fragrant that makes me totally obsess to it! Yum yum~

Marinated sauce: They put too much sauce on to one side of the chicken!
making some of the meat and rice too salty.
If the sauce can be less thick, I'm sure it would be more savoury~

Vegetables: This dish is even more expensive than the chicken rice!
$4 per plate
Surprisingly, they are really fresh and pleasant with some little spicy XO sauce (I believe
).

May be there is too many customers, it's a little messy when taking orders and queuing up on the first day. I revisited it on the next day and they divided the customers into 2 queue: take-away and eating here, which is more convenient to us.

We are very satisfied with the delicacies of Tian Tian. However, we think that the reporters have exaggerated their ratings on Tian Tian's food. With high expectation, we find that its food is rather ordinary. Despite of this, we still enjoy the meal provided by it

Went there today at 11 am and there was around 8 people in queue. the queue moved quite fast as they were rather quick in their service. I waited approximately 5 minutes for my turn. The soup was average only and I could see a thin layer of oil on top. The chilli was really good and spicy, suiting to the average singaporean tastebud. The chicken rice was slightly oilier than typical chicken rice but it was very fragrant. The chicken meat was tender as well.

The best part of this plate of chicken rice that eventually won my heart over is the fragrant and moisture chicken rice. Because it's moist enough, the rice aren't too firm and hard. As for the taste, the rice was honestly very fragrant and tasty, so good that I think it's better than the chicken

It is quite a disappointment to find out that the chicken meat tasted really mediocre. To make sure it's not only my own opinion, I asked my fellow colleagues (about 4-5 of them) and they all agree that the chicken was not the winning point for Tian Tian. The chicken meat itself is indeed tender and succulent, but they lack the ability to retain the moisture in the chicken meat.

The chicken meat served was slightly thick and wide, so the texture wasn't too nice. Tender and soft, but dry and not so moist.

However, I do like the flavourful chili sauce that comes with the chicken rice. Not only is it spicy, but it has a hint of lime sauce and sugary taste. This is probably one of the best chicken rice chili sauce I've ever tasted.

The chili and soup are both... normal though. Not saying this chicken rice is not good, but it just doesn't justify the queue time and "popularity" it has.

With the recent hype surrounding Singtel's Hawker Heroes Challenge where our local hawker legends would be pitting their culinary skills against Michelin-starred chef, Gordon Ramsay, I thought that it would be good to have a food taste session of the respective 'heroes' ourselves just for curiosity sake of answering the simple question of whether these nominated hawkers are the top of their class.

Quite frankly, I found the whole challenge to be rather commercial but let us not digress further because after-all if you are here reading, I presume you would be more interested to learn about the yay and nay of Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice, so let us deliver our verdict!

I was taken aback upon the first spoonful because the steamed chicken was served slightly chilled only to realize that it was their style. The purpose of serving the steamed chicken just below room temperature was not only to give a refreshing twist but rather to soothe the heat from the accompanying chilli sauce.

The chicken portions were tender and slightly moist, making it very delectable. The chicken breast pieces did not taste dry where you would be left with strands of the white meat. Instead, it tasted supple and delicate. As detailed previously in my write-up on Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice, I believe that there is a 3 part decorum to complete that unique 'Chicken Rice Experience', which comprised of the chicken, the rice and the chilli sauce. While the chicken passed the mark with flying colours, we were largely dismayed by the mildly sweet sauce poured over the protein. Typically or label me stereotyping, I was expecting a slightly savoury, perhaps saline sauce to accompany the rice and meat so I was slightly taken aback. The second mouthful was a much clearer assessment and still, it failed to appeal to my palate. The sauce was light, slightly saccharine, gluey and seemingly lacked boldness in flavour. Then again, subjectively, I prefer my chicken rice traditionally paired with a savoury touch from the soy sauce so this was an abrupt upset to my expectations.

The rice was a beautiful accompaniment to the dish and would be a proud side standalone. According to Anthony Bourdain, 'the rice can be taken alone. Although simple, it delivers a taste that develops wonderfully and engages with the senses'. Was it that good? Well, taste is a very subjective issue and on that basis, I would choose to answer with our perspective. The rice grains were easily separated yet not overly greasy to satiate our appetite. It felt light, smooth and had a surprisingly buttery flavour to it with a hint of garlic in the after-taste. There was also a strong chicken fragrance to the rice and would easily shine in the limelight.

For the heat-conscious foodies, I would exercise caution on the chilli sauce for it was strong. The spice and heat from the chilli was bold and it was beautifully neutralized with the acidity from the lime juice. The chillis were evenly blended to a high degree of fineness, resulting in a smooth mixture. It aced the chilli test, no doubt about it.

As we visited during the peak lunch period, a queue was inevitable. They had two stalls operating concurrently alongside each other. Do note that within each stall itself, there were two queues. One would need to queue to place their order on the right hand aisle and upon making payment, make sure you retai your receipt and obediently hop over to join the second queue on the adjacent left to collect your order.

I am divided when it comes to announcing Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice as 'THE' chicken rice stall in Singapore, not to mention defending our heritage reputation against Gordon Ramsay. I believe there is no better dish among the two because their creations will only showcase their respective unique cooking style. For this very same reason, I am adamant that I will never be able to find the best chicken rice stall in Singapore because each chef has his or her unique skill to flare and for that, I respect each and every at their trade. It sounds oxymoronic that I hope that Mdm Foo will win the contest tomorrow because regardless the outcome, her business will continue to thrive post-competition where only more Singaporeans and foreigners will join the ranks of queuing.

I do admit the soup and the chilli's great, but really, Tian Tian can't match up to my favourite chicken rice stall of all time, Hainanese Delicacy at Far East Plaza. And so, the search for a worthy contender continues.

The plate of chicken looks rather normal even the taste. I guess it was over rated. Somehow, I felt disappointed. The stark difference of Tian Tian's plate of chicken may falls on the gravy that was used over the it. Gravy was moderately thick and gluey with little sweetness. Overall, I find that it has nothing much to rave about. It was quite tasteless and the meat was too soft. There was absolutely no kick in the bite.

Service
Quite uncomfortable with the marketing of chicken rice when I order portion for 2 pax, they had countered offer for half chicken at S$12.00 initially and then S$10.00 after being rejected. I was kind of surprise pricing is rather flexible based on their "season". We told them repeatedly that we could not finish half a chicken and in the end got the usual portion at S$8.00.

Disposables forks and spoons were used. As some of the chicken has been cut in big chunks, we have to cut into smaller pieces and the utensils were just not strong enough.

Ambience
Competitors are going strong as well. There were total of 4 chicken rice stalls in the middle stretch of maxwell food centre including tian tian. No doubt that Tian Tian's is famous, I heard that others like the one in blue plates are doing well too.

Price
Overated. There are better standards out there with matching prices.

Recommendations / Tips
Some customers were asking for additional soup but the lady had rejected her.

The aromatic fragrance of a plate of chicken rice simply makes one irresistible to have the urge to eat it. The tender steamed chicken is so soft and juicy on the inside and yet flavorful to taste. There has been claims that Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice along with the likes of Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice, Chatterbox and Fook Seng Goldenhill Chicken Rice are favourites among Singaporeans. Having check out Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice previously, I happened to be near Maxwell and hence decided to check out the Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice.

I visited Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice at 4pm on a weekday and was surprised that there was a queue. This stall is certainly famous.

The chicken drizzled in some 'special' sauce that is mixed by Tian Tian was amazingly tender, fleshy and tasty. It was so good that I found that there was no need for me to dip it (chicken meat) into the chilli sauce. Nevertheless, I did try the chilli sauce. It was delicious! The spiciness and sourness (from lime) gave it an extra oomph! It made me wonder each time when I am eating the chicken if I should dip it into the sauce as either way was equally delicious!

The rice was fragrant and flavourful. However, not all the grains of the rice was soft. Some stuck together and were hard. As for the Chicken Gizzard? It was slightly more expensive than else where at $0.80 and I wish that they were sliced in smaller pieces to aid eating.

Overall, Tian Tian is certainty a place to check out if you are looking forward to a meal of chicken rice.

ps: out of all the places that I have eaten thus far, I would rate Tian Tian's Chicken Rice at second. My top favourite would be the Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice at Golden Mile Food Centre. Main reason is because some parts of Tian Tian's rice were hard.

Chicken rice is one of my favourite local dishes. The rice is very fragrant and is cooked using chicken stock soup. The chicken is tender and juicy. Further, they are also drizzled with sesame oil and sauce which enhanced the taste of the chicken. The chilli sauce is spicy and adds punch to the chicken. The chicken rice is a lunch worthwhile. I am definitely going to buy it again soon. A very satisfying meal.
