haha we would have ordered more, if only the rest were as enthusiastic as me!! i ordered one whole plate for myself okay
which is three pieces. and i do think that it is quite affordable, considering the size of the bun!! normally char siew sou also costs around that price, but it's usually smaller? anyway, this bun is simply unbeatable. previously papa brought it back for us all the way from HK too ^^ and despite hours on the plane, it still tasted so awesome after we toasted it. what more having it fresh?!
oh yeah, i forgot to mention that i came here at around 9.40am in the morning (when it opens at 10am) just so that we don't have to be delayed in the queue. and it worked!!
this was the most awesome breakfast to start the week, right before audit class ;) and i'm writing this is one of my worst weeks of the sem x.x boohoo :'(

anyway. these buns. if you haven't tried it yet (i don't know whether there is anyone even slower than me...the whole world seems to have tried it!), please do!!!! oh gosh, even if you aren't a fan of char siew, you will love this bun so much :') it kinda has the bo lo bao kind of texture, but EVEN BETTER than that. a perfectly flaky crust, lightly crumbly, slightly sweet, and one bite gives way to deliciously tasty char siew within it. i want more!!!!

the rest of the dishes at Tim Ho Wan are pretty standard, and the quality is alright as well! (: they have four signature dishes called the Big 4 Heavenly Kings. we tried three of them, because the last was a chee cheong fun with pigs liver which we don't really fancy. the pan fried carrot cake ($4.50 for 3 pcs) was quite yummy! (: fried to a crisp, and with little bits of (i think) chinese sausage within it. it was super fragrant!

the last of the 4 signature dishes was the steamed egg cake $3.80, which is kinda like a huat kueh? spongy, light and fluffy, but i'm not a big fan of it
it's just a personal thing. haha.

there were dishes like har gow ($5.50 for 4 pcs), chee cheong fun with shrimp ($5.50) and bbq pork ($5.50), chicken feet with black bean sauce ($4) which were quite alright as well.

we liked the congee with lean pork, century egg and salted egg ($4.20) for its subtle flavour, while not being too salty (: i couldn't really taste any of the salted egg though

and i really enjoyed our dessert which was yam puree with sago ($3.50)! ^^ give me anything with yam and i'll devour it hehe
it was a lovely smooth puree that was relatively light (good, especially since we were already so full from the dim sum) and i loved the added texture of the sago inside it! (:

overall, i would say that Tim Ho Wan is quite un-impressionable other than the BARBECUED PORK BUNS and yam puree (: but i would come back, just for these two items. the good thing is that the dim sum here is still priced reasonably, so there is no reason not to come back ^^

Not many local Dim Sum stall selling this, Deep-baked golden skin was crispy. A right balance of sweet, salty and juicy roasted pork, I found some fatty meat inside. Cost at $4.50, it was filling indeed.

Bouncy and wrapped tightly, they were fresh from cooktop. Be caution don’t hurt your tongue, it was very hot while it served. Traditional taste from Chinese style, I dipped it and ate along with chilli sauce. It was $4.20 for normal spring roll and $5.50 for Beancurd Skin Roll.

Texture was elastic without overly sweet, only $3.50. Thinking those imperial concubines appeared in drama, they were also eating the same thing with me, what a joke. It was a great dining experience for me.

I have tried to patronise their outlet during the first few weeks after their opening but due to the large amount of customer queue which will eventually take several hours, I have decided to come on another time. This time round after several months later, I decided to come on a weekday lunch time and queue can still be seen but not too much as compared to the time when it first open. After waiting for around a hour plus, it is time to get to taste the famous hong kong tim sum. I have ordered some of the famous item which is the bbq char siew pao, steamed ma la gao and the steamed siew mai. Firstly, the famous bbq char siew pao has a nice light golden brown colour, buttery flaky crust and a generous amount of well-seasoned char
siew fillings in it. Next the steamed ma la gao is my favourite as it has a soft and very spongy texture, has a light brown sugar flavour and almost has the melt in the mouth effect. As for the steamed siew Mai, it is sufficiently steamed and has generous amount of the fillings. Apart from this item, I have also tried the carrot cake, zhu chang fen with char siew fillings and other items as well. Overall, I can say that most of the items are quite tasty and some are even better than our locally dim sum stall. However, it will be good if they have sell the liu sa pao which is the custard egg yolk pao. Price wise is a bit steep as compared to local dim sum stall. [Review from mobile]

I had bought their house special Baked bun with BBQ pork.

The bun was small but with generous amount of BBQ pork.

The top layer skin of the bun was crispy and sweet, tasted average.

The bun dough tasted soft but lump into a dough in the mouth.

The BBQ pork tasted good with char siew sweet sauce.

Overall this bun tasted good but not spectacular.   Crystal Jade bakery has better Baked bun with BBQ pork.

I waited for a bout 20mins to get in.

Not all dim sum is good- but the big 4 heavenly kings are definite must try.

Baked bun with BBQ pork ($4.50) is perhaps the best dish I had. Savoury, sweet char Siew chunks encased in a crumbly, buttery outer shell- makes the ultimate char Siew bun/pastry'

Steamed egg cake ($3.50) is a soft, fluffy piping hot cake with a slight sweet, almost caramalized flavour in it! Every bite is delightful.

Vermicelli roll with pigs liver $5.50 is a unique Cheong fun dish. I felt the pigs liver was a little over cooked, hence slightly tough, but the liver flavor came out nonetheless. The flour skin is utterly silky smooth that goes well with the soy sauce provided.

Carrot cake $4.50 was an ok dish- each slab was glistening in oil, but the sides were pan fried to a nice crispy golden brown.

The problem with dining here is probably enduring the long wait time and squeezing in the packed restaurant. Service staff were generally efficient and readily gave pack out boxes for our unfinished dim sum.

The steamed egg cake is soft and fluffy, but not really to our likings as we seldom eat this outside.

Lastly, for dessert, we had their Osmanthus Jelly, which was very good!

The other dishes which we ordered were quite ok. They even give you boxes to pack the food back home at no additional charges if you can finish all of them!

Not every time there will be a long queue there, especially with the recent opening of their second outlet. So do go there and try the famous char siew bao!

One of my favourites! The egg's taste is really distinct. The cake is has a really spongey texture and is moist. Best egg cake I have ever tried!

Service was quite fast too. Food arrived in a matter of minutes (within 10 minutes).

When the Char Siew buns were served, I was the first the try it! It's really scrumptious! I like the savoury taste of the sauce & the milky crust of the bun. So glad that we had ordered 2 servings, as each only have 3 buns. After whacking 2 buns, started to fill abit full...

We went on to try the other items such as siew mai, har gow, prawn cheong fun & liver cheong fun. None of these wow us
The steamed beef balls were the ultimatium as there is a strong beef taste! Really regretted ordering that. Finally, we tried the Malay Cake which is one of the Four Heavenly King - their signature dishes. I like its Malay Cake, which is soft & fluffy, yet the sweetness is just nice.

Overall, we were disappointed at the standard of the dim sum. The only reason we would return will definitely be the char siew buns! I wish that Tim Ho Wan set up a take-away counter just to sell this hot favourite!

We didn't get much as we were still full from our lunch: Steamed Egg Cake, Baked bun with BBQ Pork and Steamed Prawn Dumpling.

The baked bun with BBQ Pork is supposedly the most popular dish at Tim Ho Wan (Each person can only order one set of 3 buns) and it did not disappoint. The exterior of the bun was crispy and crumbly and had a very nice texture, and the BBQ Pork was warm and delicious. THis is a must try indeed.

I really love steamed egg cakes, especially the smell and the one made by Tim Ho Wan had a nice fragrance to it. The cake itself was soft and fluffy, and the taste was rich. This is another of Tim Ho Wan's popular items and for good reason. The steamed prawn dumpling was average and didn't really stand out compared to the other 2 dishes we had.

If you happen to chance upon a short queue, do give it a try! Take aways are welcomed as well! But a problem is the sitting area is small, hence the insanely long queues.

Steamed Egg Cake (SGD3.80++) :: A counterpart of the above item, I thought this has its king’s crown on it deservedly. While I was in Hong Kong, I was too quick to throw it out the window as the name isn’t as appealing, you have to admit. But its holey and fluffy package is indeed heavenly I had quite a handful of this. Packed complete with fragrance and softness.

Tonic Medlar & Osmanthus Petal Cake (Cold) (3pcs) (SGD3.50++) :: Entertainingly wobbly and jelly-like, this plate of dessert had me feel refreshed. For one, it’s cold. The other thing is, whenever there are elements of flower / parts of flower in a dish, it always gives this cleansing effect, which is a feel-good mood. It might come across as a ‘tad too sweet for some, but it’s fine for me.

Prawn Dumpling (4pcs) (SGD5.50++) :: I thought the wrap was a little too sticky and dry for me. But the prawns inside made it all up. No shortchanging, they stuffed the dumpling full of prawns, fresh sizable prawns. Pretty unanimously favored.

Vermicelli Roll with Pig’s Liver (SGD5.50++) :: Its vermicelli roll is renowed, claiming a spot as one of the Heavenly Kings. I thought the sweet soy sauce fell short a little. If it was more powering and sweeter, it would have been perfect. Save for that, the rest of it was indulging. I love innards of animals’, and the pig liver is of standard – not ones you get in Chicken Rice stalls, where it’s hard and dry, and has a grainy texture. Nothing of that sorts here.

Pork Dumpling with Shrimp (4pcs) (SGD5++) :: As per its prawn / shrimp counterpart, Prawn Dumpling, anything to do with it, you can be assured that it’s fresh and springy, not overcooked. It’s easy to sink your teeth into. Quite a hot favorite around the table as well.

Notwithstanding that, its spring roll is crispy, for sure, with a slight mess wrapped in it. I thought the flavors were not distinctive enough to really know what’s going on. It was just an, ‘okay, it tastes good’ encounter for me.

In my opinion, Dim Sum has to be one of the most subjective food types around. If you notice, heading to a Dim Sum Restaurant with some friends of yours can be interesting. If they are your usual Dim Sum kah-kees, you’d realize how they always only order these food items and skip some others. If you don’t like xiao long bao for instance, it’d probably be hard for the taste to be altered anytime soon, without an event.

Don’t take my words for it, try it for yourself. Amidst the crazy heightened hype, expectations are probably overly skyrocketed at the moment. Calm yourself down before heading in. If you’re happy, just applaud for the Michelin-starred Chef Mak Kwai Pui. Got a chance to have little chat with him, and it is evident that he is a down to earth person.

Highly recommend the Baked Bun with BBQ pork. It's very tasty and different. The baked bun has a sweet taste to it which goes well with the BBQ pork! Love it. The steamed egg cake was really soft and scrumptious. The vermicelli roll with pigs liver was okay, the liver was a little bit tough. I would suggest ordering something else. The queue was quite long but it is worth the wait. Try to go in a group so you have accompany! The environment is very Chinese (obviously) and creates the right atmos

It is a little cramped because of the large number of people but food>people.
