Besides Quality Hotel (read my post on their porridge buffet here), Crystal Cafe at Killiney Road is another Taiwan porridge place worth visiting. It is an unpretentious cafe with no contemporary decor compared to other restaurants in the heart of Orchard. This restaurant looks rather old-fashioned which is probably why they have managed to preserve pocket-friendly prices for their porridge buffet.Sweet potato porridge is served here. Sweet potato porridge is served here. The variety of food on the buffet line is not as huge as that of Quality Hotel’s but some of their dishes are superior in taste. I particularly like the hae bee hiam (spicy dried shrimps), bittergourd in black bean sauce (doesn’t taste bitter at all) and pig trotters (plenty of meat and collagen!). The braising sauce for the chicken feet, pig trotters, stewed pork, braised eggs and beancurd skin (tau kee) is one of the best ones around (besides my grandmother’s of course).

All dishes here are truly food that makes the best accompaniments with the plain porridge as their flavours are salty and robust. I also like their choice of vegetables i.e. preserved mustard green, sugar snap peas and hairy gourd with dried shrimps that are packed with a nice tender crunch. Even the curry chicken is rich and flavourful (though oily). The only thing that I didn’t fancy was their fried smelt (locally known as ‘sua chiam’) that was left out too long and was soft and greasy. And how can we miss the usual condiments of salted egg, fried anchovies (ikan bilis), braised peanuts and our all time favourite fermented beancurd? These never go wrong with porridge!

Had a family gathering here last Sunday - ambience and service was great. Food was not too bad too. It's a taiwan porridge buffet, and there were the usual salted eggs, preserved tofu and vegetables which were fresh and delicious. Service was friendly and the place cosy for a family get-together.

This cafe has been featured in the Channel eight food programme so decided to go there and give it a try. The choices available on their buffet spread was not really that many, but most of the dishes taste delicious. My favourite among all will be their braised duck. The duck meat is very tender and juicy, the dark soya sauce gravy is very fragrant and blend in really well with the duck meat. Their sweet potato porridge tastes equally delicious as well.

The cafe is indeed very big and i think can easily sits 200 paxs as they have 2 sections. The choices of buffet menu is simple and taste is good. The porridge is cooked with sweet potatoes and texture is good. When you take the poridge, you can also take those usual stuffs which we eat at home with porridge like fermented bean curds, roasted peanuts, ikan bilis etc..Next is the steamer of steam fish cakes followed by the main dishes for porridge which are braised pig's trotters, mui chye with pork, tau pok and tau kwa braised in black soya sauce, braised chicken, salted vegetables, salted eggs..etc..and desserts like fruits and small size cakes, longan tau foo and coffee/tea.
For adult at $13.80 and child at $11.80,we paid $46.38 after taxes and it is a satifying meal for my family.
