an RI friend organised november G20 dinner at moi lum 梅林 at maxwell road on 26.11.2015. ^^ we had 11pax.
the last one we had here was almost 3 years ago on 16.1.2013.
restaurant has several couplets on the wall, a bit of chinese tradition.
restaurant was less than 1/2 full.
the 8 treasures duck 八宝鸭 is their signature dish.
i saw the leg was quite disproportionate, size like a goose leg. later i realized probably the stuffing caused it to look huge.
must say this dish was really excellent!
duck was tender & so very flavourful. this is for me a fine chinese dish. though it was not served as an individual dish, the preparation must be so fine & skillful & the flavour was exquisite. ^^
the next dish, yam basket, was rather poor though.
the yam has now fragrance 芋香.
this is such a common almost ancient chinese restaurant & now zi char dish. quite surprising.
made me recall what a good yam basket i had at ah orh according to my previous post, though i cannot really remember the taste now.
my friend seems to be ordering all the birds here – duck & chicken.
but this chicken was again excellent, probably their signature also.
it came with sticky rice & other tasty stuffing, forgot to take photo.
chicken was deboned. the server confirmed that. we were wondering how that was done. didn’t have the answer. :-)
this was so different from the usual roast chicken, and also the very processed roast chicken with roast skin & minced meat made into a pancake (some restaurants called it 金龙鸡) which i don’t like.
salted egg prawns were competent, ordinary.actually not that great, in my opinion.hk steamed flower garoupa came with a load of fried garlic.
fish was very good, quite expected of a good chinese restaurant. the garlic gave it some differentiation.
not a wow dish for me, unlike the 8 treasures duck 八宝鸭 & the chicken.
the chives dish i guess was new for us, don’t recall having it previously, but not my favourite at all.
a 3-egg spinach or a good fragrant garlic fried vegetable dish would do better for me.
we had a fruit platter to share.
& some red beans pancake also.
dinner came to S$31pax nett for 7dishes include dessert. quite doable. the duck & chicken were beyond my expectations. fish was very good & the other dishes so-so. so overall i supposed quite good but a bit incomplete, not in terms of food quantity (we all had a wonderful meal) but in knowing what good dishes the restaurant serve.
another way to look at it-having 2 outstanding dishes is better than having mostly above average dishes.
we all had good chats & a wonderful time together.

this restaurant is unbelievably popular. for quite a few times when we tried to come here without making reservations, it was ALWAYS full! so this time, we finally remembered to make a reservation for it.

first up we had the fish maw crab meat soup ($18 medium). this was a flavourful soup with a nice consistency - not too gooey nor too thin, and there was a rather generous amount of crab meat inside which i liked.

the majestic roast chicken ($14 small) was nicely done!
i loved how the meat was tender, with the slightly crisp skin. and there was this chili sauce (slightly like chicken rice chili) that went beautifully with it!

the dried scallop white cabbage ($16 medium) was a very well-received dish!
simple but tasty, i loved how the scallop gave a delightful flavour which balanced out the monotony of the cabbage.

the braised spare ribs ($18 small) was a simple dish which i quite liked! the ribs were braised till the meat was soft, and it fell off the bone easily. the sauce was also very tasty

lastly, there was this vegetable dish that is apparently not on the menu! it was really interesting! i initially thought i wouldnt like it? but turned out that it was a really well put-together dish. it was full of an array of ingredients from crisp lotus roots, black fungus, carrots, celery and macademia nuts!!!!
okay maybe that's why i loved the dish so much. i mean, the lotus roots were really interesting, and had a yummy texture. but it was the nuts that sealed the deal for me
haha.

Although I did not have a chance to try at the actual stall itself, I had the opportunity to try this awesome Moi Lum Salted Egg Fish Skin as it was at Singapore Favourite Food. Well, I was given a huge portion of it when I bought this dish and I finished every bit of it. It was so addictive. It was crispy, topped with spring onions and the salted egg sauce goes so well with it. I will definitely visit the restaurant for to try on their other dishes one day.

I'm not usually a fan of fish skin but decided to give it a try since my friends were raving about how awesome this is! Moi Lum had set up a stall at Singapore Food Festival this year so I had a chance to try this dish without having to go all the way to Tanjong Pagar. It's amazing how they can make the skin so crispy that it crumbles the moment you bite into it - it's almost like eating keropok. The salted egg was not too salty and helped to mask over the fishy taste. Very addictive snack!

I will definitely order this in their restaurant the next time I visit them!

Seafood Treasure Fried Rice ($6.50)
This dish takes the longest time to make out of the 3 dishes. It tastes very nice, especially with the fish roes popping in the mouth.

As I am using a 20% off voucher at this booth, it costs a total of $16.80 using NET Flashpay Card.

I actually tried Moi Lum at SFF 2013 instead at their actual physical store. Despite just having a makeshift booth with such a small kitchen, Moi Lum still manages to keep their high standards! I was expecting a dry, distasteful chicken but to my amazement, their roasted chicken was totally the opposite of my expectations. The skin was well-roasted, not too dry. The chicken meat was super tender and flavorful. Their chili was pretty good too, not too spicy with a hint of lemon/lime that enhanced

Was supposed to be on a diet but I polished off the huge plate of roasted chicken rice as I just couldn't stop till I finished every single mouth of it. I will definitely try more dishes at their physical store when an occasion arises!

We are Cantonese, you see, and Grandma always insist that we stick to our own cuisine and that is why Moi Lum restaurant seems to be the perfect alternative.

With roots sinking back in the 1920s, Moi Lum Restaurant aims to bring traditional food quality while keeping up with modern tastes to cater to different walks of life. Personally, the appetizers or better known as the "cold dish/plate" in Chinese, was my favourite. For one, it is presentable enough like how every opening dish should looked like. Secondly, the subtle flavours and textures of the assorted dishes was a delight to the palate, and readied my appetite for what is to come. Please do note that the cold dishes differ from set meals to set meals depending on pricings.

Our dinner set meal included their restaurant speciality, Majestic Crispy Roast Chicken - tender, juicy white meat lined with a thin layer of fats and crispy brown skin. On a nut shell, the dish was a tad bland especially at the breast area, but was fixed by a sprinkle of salt and freshly squeezed lime juice. It is also come complete with an abundance of crunchy crackers.

The veggies were pretty bitter without the semi-sweet oyster sauce. However, the whole mushrooms paired with braised abalone slices was just good enough to save this dish.

Seafood Golden Pockets were such adorable bites, if you still have no idea what does it look like, it is actually made in resemblance of sacks of money, while the tempura scallops are made to look like golden coins. How auspicious does this dish sounds.. Feeling rich already?

Besides dinner sets, Moi Lum also serves a series of a la carte food items and affordable set lunches (with drinks and desserts) as well. Conclusion? Not the best Cantonese cuisine out there, but definitely worth a try.

As my mother is the birthday girl for the day, she decided to pick her favourite Cantonese cuisine hangout at Moi Lum in Tanjong pagar, a stop away from our place, and it was quite empty at 11.50am sharp on a weekday that I wondered why she had to make a reservation.

The staff, which was mostly made up of senior citizens, had quite good service that I felt it was over-friendly. All eyes were on our table like an eaglehawk waiting to swoop down to serve us before we even raised our hand to signal them to come over. We had to tell a few of the staff for a few times that we were still deciding.

We ordered quite a few dishes because there was a groupon voucher which my mother had bought, $40 for $80 worth of food. Because of the huge value that we have, we decided to try the best specialities in the house!

We ordered a majestic roast chicken (small $14) and it was REALLY MAJESTIC, living up to the name. With slightly crisp skin and a juicy tender roasted taste in the middle of the white chicken, this chunk of meat goes really well with the chilli sauce that I believe was made in-house! You can see the chicken is fried slightly to a crisp golden brown, giving off its fragrance through the golden browncolors.

We also ordered the scallop in yam basket, a unique dish that I seldom see (small $14). The waitress sliced the yam basket in front of us in equal portions and I could smell the fragrant from a distance. Topped with vegetables, the scallop gives off a delightful flavour balancing the taste with the yam, which was coasted with a layer of crispy thin flake!

We also had chilli kangkong, which was not as good because the vegetable did not taste as fresh. I would personally not recommend this dish as it was not one of the favourites or chef’s recommendations but my mother wanted it so we had to give in to the birthday girl!

The claypot stew beef (small $15) was really delicious! It was the first dish to arrive and we thought we could just eat this dish with rice and forego the rest.
The other dishes were served pretty quickly too and we were quite surprised and their fast and efficient service. Made with tender beef slices, it was delectably generous alongside with beef meatball and a generous portion of vegetables. A highly recommended dish if you’re a fan of beef.

We had a ice-cream with mango sauce for dessert and it was not as tasty as you see in the picture. It was a battle of sour versus sweetness of the mango, which gives off a weird funny taste and our family passed the verdict that Moi Lum doesn’t fare well in desserts.

Oh, and the restaurant quickly filled up with executives from offices nearby and it was full-house before it hit 12.45pm. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and my family and I were quite pleased that the toilet was quite clean, and the air-conditioners were also dust-free. It is rare to find a modern restaurant served with traditional Cantonese cuisine and this is indeed a gem!
