I was running errand in Hougang central so I drop by the Kopitiam at Hougang mall for dinner. They are sorta under revamp or something, quite a few usual stalls had moved. No more fave char kway tiao and hokkien mee. Decided to patronize Qiu Lian Ban mian after having the craving for so long! Qiu lian ban mian as made its name for selling awesome ban mian in the coffee shops/food courts. Qiu lian ban mian used to sell really awesome handmade noodles. I feel that the standard has dropped a little but it is still pretty good. The ban mian is chewy in texture and not overcooked until it is too soft. I think that is the best part - the just nicely cooked noodles. The soup is tasty as well with a generous serving of anchovies and fried onions. A great dish on a cold day as the ban mian provides a lot of warmth.

The ban mian actually does not taste as good as I expected - It is way too soft and the sizes are totally off - some are too thick while some are too thin . I don't mean for them to be of exact size, but at least similar size that are not totally , entirely different - this is because the cooking time for various different thickness of ban mian is different . There were fried shallots and anchovies as topping. One egg, chicken meat and some cabbage were added to cook together with the noodles. I like the soup. the ban mian taste alrite, served hot and noodles were just nice (not hard not soft). You mian is nicer for me coz i prefer thin noodle. Quite ordinary stall here, vendors are friendly though. not a long queue during lunch time, service is quite fast, price is standard compare to outside stalls.

I want something light so U mian from Qiu Lian Ban Mian is an ideal choice. A good amount of U Mian with a lot of vegetable and dried ikan belis added to my bowl of U Mian. It came with minced pork and an egg too. I prefer to have it with red cut chillies. The soup based got a nice peppery taste with no MSG added. It was a very satisfying meal.

The noodles are supposed to be hand cut so it's fresh and separate. Supposed to be made fresh daily. The soup has 3 prawns in it but they are not shelled, so it's a bit annoying and spikey. The noodles are very good - springy and al dente and not too heavy. The soup is surprisingly wonderful and very tasty. Does not make you thirsty later.
