Recently visited the restaurant which was currently having 2-for-2 dinner buffet promotion. The restaurant was updating its menu and currently without pork or lard as it would be getting Halal certified soon. Everyone's favourite section was the Dessert Station, especially the durian part which consisted of Durian Tart, Durian Crepe, Durian Pengat, Durian Fudge Cake and Durian Puff, but the must have item was the Durian Pengat which was served in shooter style. Rich in fresh which made the other durian desserts pale in comparison.

Pulut Hitam was another dessert which I would recommeded as the version here had dried longan and orange peel in it which gave the sweet soup an unique taste.

For the that day, the Noodle Station offered Penang White Curry Noodle and Ipoh Hor Fun which tasted kind of bland. Kind of sad that the popular Laksa was not available.

The Street Delights (Live Station) offered Fried Sambal Seafood which was one could selected seafood and vegetables to be stir fried, as well as, Claypot Curry Fish Cheek. Sambal sotong with onions was a good choice with the spicy seafood pairing with the sweetness from the onion.

From the Mains, the Lamb Curry was surprisingly tasty without the usual gamy taste. Most will target for the Chilli Lobster which was the usual Chilli Crab replace with lobster. Don't forget to get some bread to dip the sauce with. By the way the Truffle Butter next to the Bread Basket was umami.

The double boiled soup of the day was Ginseng Chicken Soup was light and flavourful with tender pieces of meat in it.

If you preferred something hand on, there would Kueh Pie Tee with its light crispy shells stuffed with braised vegetables, topped with prawns, eggs, and coriander.

Not forgetting the Seafood on Ice section which had Tiger Prawn, Clam, Mussel, Flower Crab, Yabbies and Oyster.

Overall there was bits for everyone although the spread looked limited. One was stuffed at the end of the meal. Don't forget to wash down the meal with a cup of Teh Tarik which was milky and not too sweet. Although the tiny table was overcrowded with plates, the staff often came over to clear.

The staff clears the table quite promptly and they always have a smile on their faces, which makes it a good dining experience.

This is the place to go for durian and buffet lovers. The durian pengat is very rich with durian pulp and it's mye favourite. It also run out very fast, so do grab one when you can. The durian cake is very soft and moist and one can't stop at just 1 piece though sinful. 

I don't quite like the durian pancake/crepe though as I think they are quite hard and cold. Prefer the skin to be hot while the filling are cool. 

Service by staff is very good, and they clear the plates very fast. A good place for family and friends gathering, and the location is convenient!

I just wonder sometimes why I would go crazy with buffets especially when I love variety but I’m never able to eat so much at one setting compared to the husband. And my appetite seems to shrink as I grow older (another sign of aging?) but my weight remains the same (unfair!). The Straits Cafe is located on ground level of the Rendezvous Grand Hotel and it serves up a decent spread of Asian delights and Singaporean favourites.

At S$40++ per pax for the weekend high tea buffet, the available variety of food is rather impressive. Besides cold appetisers, salads (and DIY ones too), sashimi, sushi, chilled seafood (prawns, flower crabs & conch aka ‘gong gong’), cheeses, dim sum, popiah & kueh pai tee stations, kebab corner and desserts, there are also live stations for kopi & teh tarik (coffee & tea), roti prata and their award-winning laksa.

The prawns and flower crabs are fresh but they are just not sweet which is a common trait of chilled seafood at buffets anyway. Neither am I a big fan of the gong gong which tastes like overcooked, chewy escargot with no flavour. The salmon sashimi is not of the best cut as I could taste the sinews in some of the pieces. The octopus is pretty good though. Nicely poached, tender and sweet. And of course, the husband never forgets his sushi which is of pretty normal standard.

I didn’t manage to try every single thing of course so these are just pictures of what all of us had on our plates. I particularly like the bak kut teh (with a nice peppery flavour), made-it-myself kueh pai tees (still not as good as Carousel’s but not too bad) and grilled meat from the kebab station. The rest of the items are pretty much mediocre, nothing exceptional.

I was a bit disappointed with the so-called ‘award-winning’ laksa as I felt it lacked punch and spices. Even after I’ve mixed in a tablespoonful of sambal chilli, the gravy just fails to excite my taste buds. The fragrance from the coconut milk is there but it just doesn’t taste complete. I wonder if the chef is now different, that’s probably why the standard has dipped.

What I like here which I haven’t seen in other high tea buffets is the live drinks stall (that looks like an olden days street food stall) that serves up freshly pulled milk tea aka teh tarik which is one of the best I’ve had. It is not overly sweet and has the right balance of tea flavour versus milk.

The roti prata which is prepared upon order is sadly chewy and lacks the fluffiness and crisp of a good prata. The curry gravy is decent though, rich in flavour and not too oily.

Glass panels framing part of the restaurant gives the customers to view of the street life along Bras Basah Road. The interior design of the restaurant provides a comfortable dinning place. However, the space in between the walking path and the serving tables are quite close. Open concept kitchen is also one of the highlight here as we can see the chefs on action and the foods served are still in good condition.The service staff was quite attentive as they will promptly clear the plates once we cleared our foods. This gives us ample reasons for not having many rounds.

As usual, sashimi counters are available. The chef will slice upon your requested choice of sashimi to maintain the freshness of the sashimi. Cooked foods choices from chinese cuisine and indian cuisines are available next to the sashimi sections.

Seafood varieties are quite limited but I do enjoyed the snow crabs served though.I saw some of the customers are mainly having snow crabs throughout the night. Service staff will serve the utensils and lime washing bowl for the table that are having snow crab. This ease the inconvenience and I think it is quite a thoughtful service.

Do not miss the award winning laksa which is also the hotel’s signature. The gravy taste isn’t too milky and the noodles texture was smooth and savour into the soup. However, the ingredients wasn’t quite generous and the cockles size was small.

Durian pengant and durian cake are the signature of Rendezvous. Durian pengat is rich with durian pulp and I am so in love with the taste. I had 4 cups of it and it was truly sinful. Durian cake has the soft vanilla sponge and durian cream.The combination is quite unique. Durian puffs and durian crepes are readily in chilled condition. Durian puff wasn’t that good for me as I felt the puff texture is slightly hard and dry.

Dessert counter is available with various choices of cakes and desserts. It completes with a chocolate fondue too. Fruits and ice-creams are available for those who loves to enjoy desserts. You will be spoilt with choices.

Its Seafood Counter, disappointingly, fell short. Not only was its selection limited, its quality did not quite make up for it either. I thought the dishes were prepared clumsily, as item after item tasted bland and seemingly non-marinated. I found myself not re-visiting the counter I so adore.

Though some variety of greens in the Salad Counter, none of them was especially distinctive. Too many accompanying ingredients I say. It’d be more effective if it was made simpler and more direct. At least for diners like me, I’d know what I’m in for and have a more recognized taste.

Well good thing is, if you are a fan of Rojak, Chinese or Indian renditions alike, you can be assured that it’s a more than safe choice here at the buffet. Both are pretty pleasurable. Well for the former, you can have some fun whipping up your own Chinese Rojak with the usual suspects you have in a Chinese Rojak dish.

Though it looks like one, this Pork Knuckle wasn’t comparable to some I’ve had. It was a ‘tad bit too salty, and somehow it didn’t have the punch one would feel while devouring a Pork Knuckle, like for instance, one at Brotzeit. Just a slice for tasting would suffice.

On to the liquids in the buffet line. Curry enthusiasts, prepare your palate for it as there are three different flavors of curry. I’m not one, thus I skipped it, for the Double-boiled Soup instead. That, is possibly one of the best items of the entire buffet. It tasted genuinely authentic, and addictive too. And I’m positive it wasn’t the works of MSG, which makes it impressive. However, its counterpart, the supposedly awe-inspiring award-winning Laksa didn’t quite meet the mark. The noodles was too soft and delicate for my liking.

Right at one end of the line, meet the Sushi Counter. Even though it isn’t the most extensive selection of sushi as you can see, the treasure is what’s hidden underneath. Kept chilled below the counter are the Salmon and Tako Sashimi, and Oysters. The Salmon Sashimi was definitely not fresh. The Tako Sashimi tasted slightly better. Oysters was passable. To make the buffet worth it, you might want to slurp off more shucks of oysters.

The satisfying part of the buffet only started late into the buffet. The Dessert Counter. Complete with a Chocolate Fondue, I was a happy kid going around, contemplating on which dessert piece to fill my stomach with. The Chocolate Mousse was the best one of them all. No regrets with the calories, girls, I assure you.

A heaven to most locals, the chilled Durian Dessert Counter offers durian crepes, durian puffs, durian cake, and durian pengat. I say, save your stomach for THESE. The puff is my favorite. Wings will grow with a pop into your mouth.

Well, though this wasn’t the best buffet I’ve had, it is one of the more affordable hotel buffets, so what can I complain about right. If you aren’t picky and on a tight budget, this is still up for consideration.

Prices:
$42++ (Lunch from Mon – Sat)
$48++ (Lunch on Sunday)
$50++ (Dinner from Mon – Thurs)
$53++ (Dinner from Fri – Sun)

While I was there, they have a card promotion where the 3rd dines for free when paid with an UOB card.

After so long, we finally decided on Straits Cafe from the long list of many hotel buffet places we found online since people were saying its consider as a buffet that is nice and affordable.

However, I got to say that I am kinda disappointed. Its a little different from what I thought. I thought dinner has more variety and hence we chose the dinner slot for buffet and made reservations. Oh, regarding that, you might want to consider making reservations if you are interested to try out the food over there. I called like 4 hours before going down for the buffet and only managed to get the last table meant for three people.

Back to food, named international buffet, how could you leave out salmon sashimi right? I am satisfied with the salmon sashimi since it is our favourite food. They also serve fresh oysters (Do note that it is limited to 4 oysters per person at a time, you can queue again after you finish it though) The oysters are not bad as well, worth trying if you really like seafood. They did serve some sushi, however, we did not try it out since the variety is a very limited.

If you are a fan of Local food, perhaps this buffet suits you the best. They have like rojaks, mutton, chicken, crabs, drunken prawns, roti prata and even laksa served (salads and desserts as well with a durian dessert corner), I only tried laksa since the others do not really appeal to me, and the laksa is really nice that i ate two bowls of it. The double boiled nutritious soup is also worth a try if you like soups like me


Lastly to the desserts, we were kinda disappointed with the dessert corner as well. There are cakes, tarts, chocolate fondue, durian puffs and fruits. sounded like its a lot right? However, there are not strawberries for chocolate fondue which I thought there should be(perhaps it's just me), only marshmallows and grapes. Three types of cakes, orange sponge cake, hazelnut and some yoghurt cake. two types of ice cream: Lime Sorbet and Green Tea with milk. The former is quite nice i would say, combination of sweet and sour, its just like a yoghurt.

Nevertheless, I think that the ambience is nice. What is worth trying to me if you are there are the laksa, double boiled nutritious soup, salmon is like a standard thing, oysters and the lime sorbet ice cream.

There is a DBS promotion now at 20% off the total bill i think. So initially we have to pay like $59 per person and only end up paying $48.

This hotel international lunch buffet is so worth the price!  Their durian fugde cake and all those durian items are so awesome and delicious that I cannot help not taking the second price. Their seafood such as losbter is a must try! It is so sweet and fresh. They serve teh tarik that is as good as those made in traditional indian store. For a limited period from 22 April to 12 May 2013, Straits Café at Rendezvous Grand Hotel Singapore has invited Korean guest Chef Kim Hyun Jung from Lotte World to present A Taste of Korea as part of its International buffet.

There are already quite a number of Korean restaurants in Singapore and most of us are rather familiar with Korean cuisine. Nevertheless, it is still worthwhile to visit Straits Cafe for their buffet as some of the Korean dishes prepared by Chef Kim Hyun Jung is not commonly served in local Korean restaurant.

Banchan (side dishes) is like a staple of Korean cuisine. At A Taste of Korea buffet, the spread also offers some side dishes such as Zucchini, Bean Sprouts, Kimchi and Vermicelli. My favourite among the side dishes is the kimchi.

This is quite interesting for my limited knowledge of Korean cuisine. The Korean Ginseng Soup exactly has rice in it and it felt like having a bowl of porridge instead of a bowl of soup. The hearty bowl of Korean Ginseng Soup was very comforting with ingredients such as chicken, water chestnut and ginseng. One can also add a pinch of sea salt to enhance the flavour further.

I quite enjoy the Seabass and Zucchini Pancakes which has a nice thin coat of flour and egg batter. It was rather bland if eaten without sauces. The star was the dipping soy sauce that made the pancakes shone, accentuating the flavour and dimension of the dish.

Resembling our local curry chicken, the Korean version of Hot Spicy Chicken was rather mild and fiery free to the local palate.

The thinly sliced prime Beef Ribs was beautiful marinated and grilled to perfection. It was succulent and tender with a nice thin layer of fats. Probably the favourite among the diners as I noticed a couple of us went for more helpings of the beef ribs.

The selection of Rice Cake Rolls was Mustard (yellow), Cinnamon (Brown) and Green Tea (green). The chewy texture was quite enjoyable and the Honey Citron Tea was perfect to wash it down and cleanse the palate.

dim sum is not good compared with other buffet, mainly coz the skin is too thick. seafood is ok, the praws and salmon are quite fresh. but neither of them are highlight.

the star is definitely durian cake. it tastes marvelous, expecially for me who love durian. the same cake for sell is 49.8$ each. so it is good to have it in a buffet.

when we fill us up and left, the waitress told us that if we use UOB card, we can get one of us free (3 ppl),and if we use DBS card, we can enjoy a discount of 20%!

I think next time when I recall the amazing taste of their durain cake, I would patronize them again!

I have bought this chicken pie during the after hour promotion,which I was entitled to almost fifity percent discount from the original price of this pastry. The pastry puff was quite fluffy on the inside and slightly crunchy on the outer layer. I have bought this chicken pie during the after hour promotion,which I was entitled to almost fifity percent discount from the original price of this pastry. The pastry puff was quite fluffy on the inside and slightly crunchy on the outer layer. This restaurant not only their signature durian mousse cake is delicious, I personally also like to eat their dark chocolate cake too. The chocolate used it very thick in flavour and is also not too sweet. The cake sponge is very soft and light, which is also not too dry as well. The design looks elegant and stylish, which is great for all kind of occasions even to just have it during your normal tea break sessions too. Have a cup of coffee to go along with it will definitely be very enjoyable

I went there for the Sunday Bruch (11.30am to 2.30pm) with my friend and were welcomed by the manager the moment we stepped into the restaurant. The spread was extensive! The spread was extensive! Fresh oysters, salmon sashimi & tako were prepared on the spot. The oysters were so fresh I had four of them (each serving was 4 pieces of oyster). The cold crab legs were succulent and sweet too.

At a buffet, I don't normally eat food that can be found in hawker centres because it's a strategy to save some stomach space for the more luxurious food. However, knowing that their laksa is award winning, I ordered a bowl to see if it really lived up to its name. I was supposed to share it with my friend, but after tasting the first mouthful, i couldn't resist and finished the whole bowl by myself!

After a few rounds of food, I drifted to the desserts corner to check out the spread. We had durian penget (their specialty) and it felt like I was eating real durians! It was so good I devoured a few glasses of it. My friend had matcha ice-cream and she commented that it tasted like the one from haagen dazs!

For drinks, they have a coffee and tea making station where they serve teh tarik. The apple juice is also free flow.

I want to commend the live station cooking chef for his friendly and jovial customer service, which is rarely seen in other hotel buffet restaurants. Our used plates were also cleared very quickly. Overall, I was super pleased with the quality of the food and the awesome service.

I used DBS card on that day and was given 20 percent discount.

I am a fan of desserts and was really happy to known and has discover that the high-tea buffet at Straits Café do offer a wide variety of desserts and pastries on their buffet spreads. Most of the cakes and pastries taste delicious and really nice to eat it and go along with a cup of their brewed coffee and hot English tea. The service staffs here are friendly and approachable. Not forgetting their cooked foods which are equally good as well, especially their nonya laksa and prawn noodles. W

Was impress on these dishes and was also surprised that other western foods and desserts are equally good as well. Their pastries and cakes are definitely up the the 'hotel' standard and my family are happy to see the wide range of ice-creams to choose on their buffet spread.
