Lunch at Marmalade Pantry is something I'd been postponing for awhile now because of the long queues and well, lousy excuses aside, I never really felt compelled to come to this place. We arrived at 12.15 and thankfully, it wasn't full yet (actually, there was barely a queue!). From now til the end of June/July(?) There is a 1 for 1 for all main courses from Mon to Fri upon presenting your NTUC Card! How fantastic is that? Marmalade Pantry is unique such that the concept is similar to Ambush @ Plaza Singapura. The seating area is right smack in the middle of the mall, with the kitchen tucked away at the side.

The interior is quite chic-ly furnished, with alot of black and gloss used.

I had the Crabmeat Linguini at $24. It was served in a tomato sauce that had chunky fresh tomatoes in it with shredded crabmeat. Topped off with cheese, the dish is as creamy as it is indulgent. Tossing the pasta, the aroma of fresh crab wafts to my nose (and the adjacent tables too, I'm pretty sure!). Mmm, delicious. The pasta sauce is creamy because of the crab, even though it packs a slightly sour flavour from the fresh tomatoes. The tanginess provides a welcome contrast to the rich crab. The portion however, is huge, and even though I was hungry - I couldn't finish it. The crab taste also gets cloying after awhile. Other than that, it was good!

My colleague had Steak & Eggs ($380, which consisted of steak cooked in truffle oil (medium rare for her!), complemented by two sunny side ups and a pea mash. If you're a fan of truffle, you'll want to try the steak & eggs here -it's really one of the more popular dishes. The steak isn't super 'fantabulous' (her words!), but it's worth a try. The tender beef with the aroma of truffle is sheer indulgence. I thought to myself, for $38, I'd bet it would be.

The strawberry & cream cupcake ($4.50) is a buttershortbread cupcake topped with strawberry cream and half a fresh strawberry. The texture of the cupcake was slightly dense and dry, though, which was disappointing as it would have been perfect if it were light and airy! The strawberry cream wasn't too sweet, and I liked the icing sugar that was dusted on top of the cupcake -gave it a really pretty finish.

The William ($4.50), however, is my TOP PICK for Marmalade Pantry, and perhaps my TOP PICK FOR CUPCAKES in Singapore. I really don't like cupcakes -the sickly sweet icing, the artificial coloring and the overly buttery cake that doesn't do justice to a REAL cupcake. This cupcake, ladies & gentleman, trumps them all. The top icing is a welcoming sort of sweet, it has the grainy texture when you bite into it -super sugary. Somehow, it was balanced by the subtle vanilla flavour. The icing wasn't too oily as well, and it complemented the, get this: perfectly, airy, chococolatey and rich cupcake base. The cupcake also had slices of william pear in it. The pear provides a fruity contrast to the chocolate and vanilla, and it was just perfect in ways unimaginable til you take a bite of it. The icing to cake ratio was just nice -and for the size and quality of it, I'll pay more than just $4.50.

Top marks go to the sweets here, especially the William cupcake (do yourself a favour and try it. NOW!). The food is secondary -I wouldn't exactly be running back to this place for their mains. Other than the delicious selection of cupcakes, I also suggest the Crabmeat Linguini, and for beef+truffle lovers, go for Steak & Eggs. If you're a risotto fan that loves risotto creamy and full on flavour, their mushroom risotto is also worth a try as it has some truffle oil in it too.

My only gripe would be the service however, they took ages to get back to us and hardly wore a smile. Such negativity! But no matter, we still enjoyed ourselves with good food, a decent ambience and fantastic desserts.
