Woo is a well known ricebox chain from Taiwan. From 1939, Woo Ricebox has now grown into a chain with more than 200 outlets all over Taiwan. The chain uses slightly sticky Chihshang rice grains - the texture is a cross between Japanese pearl rice and Thai fragrant rice. Recently it expands to Singapore with an outlet in Raffles Place. The outlet has 14 types of riceboxes on its menu : Woo's Pork Chop Rice Box ($8.30), Big Drumstick Rice Box ($8.30), Spicy Drumstick Rice Box ($8.90), Crispy Chicken Cutlet Rice Box ($9.90), Golden Pork Cutlet Rice Box ($8.90), Taiwan Roast Pork Rice Box ($8.30), Saba Fish Rice Box ($8.90), Woo's Signature Rice Box ($8.30), Railway Pork Chop Rice Box ($9.90), Braised Chicken Drum Rice Box ($8.30), Braised Pork Belly Rice Box ($8.90), Braised Minced Pork Rice Box ($5.90), Woo's Healthy Rice Box ($8.30), and Veg Rice Box ($5.90). Besides there is also side dishes such as Big Drumstick ($4.40), Salt & Pepper Popcorn Chicken ($4.00), Soup ($2) and Red Tea ($1).
Based on the recommendation of the staff at the counter, I order a Railway Pork Chop Rice Box ($9.90). What is unique about the pork chop is that the pork chop is first deep fried, follows by braising. The ricebox comes in a sealed up, and biodegradable wooden box to ensure that fried toppings don't get soggy.
The pork chop filled up the whole box and very tender and flavourful. As the pork chop is not sliced into pieces, I have difficulty in eating it with just chopsticks.
Underneath the pork chop, there is sauteed seasonal vegetables, pickles and a braised egg which are delicious too.
I down all these with a cup of Red Tea ($1) which is not too sweet and full of the tea taste.Overall the food is very nice and brings back wonderful memories of Taiwan. Although it is much more costly than what I have in Taiwan, but it is one of the closest taste that one can get in Singapore.
