I soon find out that while CoCo Ichibanya is the famous "king of Japanese curry restaurant" in Japan, this is the only outlet they've opened in Singapore so far.

Here there's a wide variety of curry dishes with different toppings. Diners have the privilege to choose not only the level of spiciness and the toppings but also the amount of rice! The good news for those who wish to cut down on the carbohydrates intake is if you reduce your rice by 1010g, you will get a $1 off. The standard portion here is at 250g.

I finally ordered a salmon cream croquette curry with mushroom out of the many many dishes. My spiciness level is at 3. The curry is tasty with a subtle taste of sweetness and with my favorite mushroom. The salmon was crispy and delicious. Service was extremely fast. The moment I finished my meal, the plates are all was cleared within minutes.

My first stop was CoCo Ichibanya- specializing in Japanese Curry. When ordering, you'd first pick the preferred toppings (e.g. seafood, meat, vegetables, etc.). It was zesty, well-seasoned and neither dense nor dilute. If I was looking for the best Japanese curry, this would definitely end up on my favourite list.

Luckily when me and my friend queued, it was still considered early dinner time.
I remembered that when i order the Pork Katsu Curry Rice, i was informed by the staff whether i was sure that i wanted to order that.
At the moment i thought there's something wrong with that dish

However when the staff said that it was quite "tough" as informed by some customers, i just laughed it off and ordered

At my heart i was thinking that since there's a feedback about the dish, why don't they improve it?
Anyway when it came, it was alright and not as rock "tough" as i thought.
Overall i think i will try other dish if i visit there again

Well, its no surprise when Singapore is now bombarded with a lot of new Japanese franchises of eateries, and CoCo Ichibanya has taken a lot of attention with queues and tables in majority filled even during weekday dinners.

I wasn't enticed myself as I have a champion of my own in curry rice but my friend invited me for dinner here.

Why I wasn't enticed with it as first was because the sample dishes looked generally the same from any other kare raisu restos around - definitely you would be seeing pork chops and chicken breast cutlets around for sure.

I ordered the uniquely named clam in tomato sauce curry $13.90++ and the most interesting part, different than other places would be how you concote your own curry sauce. Choosing the curry base, spiciness, broth, and the rice to pick at a standard portion, smaller (which they deduct the price!
) or add more rice, and should you want vegetarian or meat.

Surrprisingly, I would have to give it a thumbs up and
of rice please! The rice should be from Japan - or the texture that is only known for that expensive gohan by tasting every bead of rice grain! But again, the curry, which I ordered spicy, wasn't spicy at all. As expected of any Singaporean stall.
But you could taste the 'seafoodness' of the clam and the tomato paste is just balanced enough with curry.

The only minus point was service was a tad slow, by asking water refill that took too long in this weekday night.

Price point... there's somewhere cheaper and the portion is much more fulfilling. Sorry guys, this is cookeeatmonster talking after all!

I love my omu rice- Japanese rice encased in an omelette shell and topped with special sauce. CoCo Ichibanya serves out various rice dishes served in their speciality Japanese curry sauce. You can choose to customize the spiciness of your curry, what ingredients to go with your dish, but I took the easy way out by ordering this:Cream mushroom omelette curry ($13). I can’t help but lap up every last drop of curry/cream mushroom mixture. Wished they could be more generous with the mushrooms though

Cream mushroom omelette curry ($13). I can’t help but lap up every last drop of curry/cream mushroom mixture. Wished they could be more generous with the mushrooms though. I can’t resist any mushroom+cream combo! As you gently prick the omelette shell with your spoon, the molten mixture of curry, cream and egg slowly seeps into the pristine white Japanese rice. Every bite of this dish is absolutely divine. I will definitely return to try the other Japanese curry dishes too!

We were lucky that there was hardly anyone in the restaurant when we reached there around 11.30am. There was an ongoing promotion of 10% discount till 30 Nov 2011, so we guess it's not crowded only during weekdays? The menu didn't look too appetizing actually, and the waiter & waitress were not very attentive too. We changed our table to a more comfortable one, and they didn't bother to bring the menu to us! Even when I stood up to self-help myself with the menu on the table that we had vacated, the waitress simply "stared" at us & didn't move an inch.

Fortunately the food was actually great although the color and presentation weren't too appealing! Fragrant & flavoursome curry. We could choose the spiciness level of the curry & as I read the advice on the papers some weeks back, we only asked for level 1 which was "standard". As we ate the curry, it became spicier on the tongue haha.

The only not-so-good part about this dish is the pork cutlet wasn't crispy enough & they weren't very generous with the serving. The Japanese restaurant at Takashimaya B1 - Romankan Yokohama, was better in this aspect. Nonetheless, I would say you can still try out this restaurant if you love Japanese curry.

Coco Ichibanya is known as King of Curry, with the most number of Japanese curry outlets in the world. wu ngia bo? I met yumyumformytumtum for lunner (late lunch/early dinner) to investigate. (this is Yumyum’s second time there!)

How to order: (1) You pick the curry dish first (2) customize the level of spiciness from 0 to 5 (there is also vegetables-based kids curry), (3) pick the amount of rice, (4) add toppings if you want.

For starters, we had sausage salad ($7) and salmon cream croquette ($4). The sausage salad came with soy dressing, which tasted like concentrated vitasoy! It brought out the child in me. The croquette was very creamy and smooth potato puree with just a slight hint of salmon-ness in it. Good stuff!

Yumyum’s Pork Cutlet with cheese ($14): The pork cutlet didn’t suit me because the batter was thick and the meat wasn’t tender. But the good thing is it was oil-free.

However, my Creamed Mushroom Omelet Curry ($13) was da bomb! You can’t adjust the level of spiciness and the amount of rice because the flavors needed to go together. On first bite, the molten egg, the cream, the sweet Japanese curry and the rice combined to give me a very sweet wine taste! I kid you not. It brought out the ooomph in me, like I was in some Taiwanese cook show. I wanted to say to my new friend, YumYum, “I don’t want to chat anymore. I want to concentrate on savoring the food.”

But because you know, I’m a carnivore, I added a topping of fried chicken ($4) which looked like popcorn chicken. A little tough for me. I think in general, the restaurant isn’t very good with deep fried meats, an area they need to improve on.

We also tried Hashed beef curry ($13) with a topping of mushroom (+$3). Another awesome dish! It wasn’t as spicy and had more tomato in it, making this a dish that you can keep eating without feeling excess or in Singlish, you can eat until siao but don’t feel jerlak.

Desserts: we shared three scoops of Italian ice cream ($7): vanilla, chocolate and strawberry sorbet. The vanilla was very rich; and I like the chocolate which was intense and bitter like my love.

Given the yoshinoya-alike decor, and given that there are some negative reviews, I was very pleasantly surprised that the food turned out to be fantastic and value-for-money. Where else in Orchard can you find such a deal? $13 for curry rice?? Even cai fan these days cost $8 (at Bugis Junction)! No wonder the queue is endless during lunches and dinners. Too bad it doesn’t take reservations. Is Coco Ichibanya the King of Curry? Ya Ichiban!

Buddies & I decided to try out the new Japanese curry restaurant, Coco Ichibanya, located @ B3 of 313 Sommerset. We arrived just before 6pm on a Sunday, and were happy to be able to secure a table for 4 pax rather easily.

Service was prompt and relatively friendly. Though there were many choices of curry dishes, the menu's layout was pretty easy to read through. The best part was that you could decide on the rice portion (they would even deduct $1 off if you decided to have less 100g of rice - good news for small eaters!) and the spicy level of the curry. We decided to try the followings rather quickly:

1) Mini Salad - $2
2) Fried Shrimp Curry - $12.50
3) Pork Cutlet Curry with Cheese - $14
4) Creamed Mushroom Omelet Curry - $13

1) Mini Salad
Ordered by "I just had late lunch" E - it was a simple small dish of greens with the usual Japanese white sesame dressing. Nothing spectacular, but the greens were at least fresh and crunchy. At $2, it's offererd a welcoming option for those dining companions who weren't too ready for a full proper meal.

2) Fried Shrimp Curry (rice portion: normal / spicy level: 4)
"The curry look dark!!" was our first response when the dish arrived. D who loves all things spicy, digged into the curry eagerly. We all tucked in our spoons to try without asking too..
First taste: It wasn't THAT spicy.. thus the spicy level was a little disappointing (given that L5's the max spicy level), though it did leave a very slight peppery tangy after-taste. It didn't taste like the typical Japanese curry too (nor like the local Indian curry). There's just a strong peppery flavour that seems to be present to justify the L4 spicy level. With only 2 medium size shrimps ("not too bad - crispy!" according to D), the dish looked a little bit too sad and bland. If only they had included some vegetables to stew with the curry (chunky carrots, celeries or potates, etc), the dish might have look a little bit more appetizing.

3) Pork Cutlet Curry with Cheese (rice portion: normal / spicy level: 3)
J wanted to try the curry at it's average level, so that she could know what the "normal" curry tasted like. It turned out to be a wiser choice, as L3 curry wasn't as peppery as L4, and tasted more like the usual Japanese curry we were used to. The curry was thick, though we noted that there's also no vegs.. making the dish a little miserable looking too. The pork cutlet was surprisingly tough and not juicy (in fact, it looked very, very dried up), making it a chore to chew & swallow. Having the long strands of shredded cheese around the cutlet helped to "juice-ened" it up a little, but taste-wise, you could do with or without the cheese, as the curry flavour over-powered it. J said she'll never order this dish again as the meat was just too tough, and after tucking in 2 mouthfuls, I had to agree with her verdict.

4) Creamed Mushroom Omelet Curry (rice & spicy level: fixed / not variable)
Personally, I want to thank the friendly waitress who recommended me to try this dish when I was hesitating between #3 and #4.
This turned out to be the best dish among what we'd ordered for the evening. The omelet, mushroom, rice and curry proportion was well-balanced (and greatly enhanced by the cream around the omelet), making every mouthful of this dish a joy to munch on. While the dish is creamy with curry (?? funny description, but that's how it tasted like!), the (well-cooked) egg and (not too wet) rice helped to throw the "dry/wet equation" in balance.

By the time we finished our meal, there's already a long queue outside the restaurant. The waitress asked if she could clear our plates, and in less than 2 mins after, the bill was put on our table without our asking (VERY subtle hinting that we should leave as quickly as possible..). Still, the overall service was pretty friendly and decent.

Will I go back again? Maybe.. if I'm around the area. The location is good, and the prices are pretty decent. Food arrives rather promptly, service is fairly good. But I'm afraid both Fried Shrimp Curry & Pork Cutlet Curry with Cheese have definitely been ostracized...

FYI: Coco Ichiban is currently giving all diners a 10% discount (till end Nov 2011).

Coco Ichibanya is a newly opened restaurant. I tried the creamy mushroom omelette about $12++. The food was served hot and the curry is not too spicy, slightly peppery and sweet. However, inside the omelette is just plain rice, I was hoping that it would be like fried rice or something else. The service is average, they took a long time to entertain me.
