It seems like this Restaurant is more well-known for its dim-sum, but the time I went to, it was already at night. Hence, we could only get the dinner menu which didn't include any dim-sum. The crowd at night was really thin, other than my table, only 3-4 of the available tables were occupied. With the air-con blasting at high speed and the random mix of English and Chinese songs playing overhead, one really wonders how they survive for so long. I must say though, the ambience was there. Quiet and gentle, i could really cut the silence with a knife. They also have a strict dress-code which can be flaunted easily as my company and I were all wearing flip-flops which wasn't allowed. I guess they didn't really care anymore with the few patrons they have.

We ordered Braised Asparagus with Bamboo Piths - $21.00

There wasn't anything special about this and the sauce wasn't that nice either. Normal for a simple dish, although the price was a little steep for vegetables. This was a medium sized portion. But I guess we paid for the service and environment we dined in. The asparagus was quite juicy though, which was really nice.

We also ordered the Braised Cod Fish with Dried Bean-curd - $18.00

I think this dish was more worth it as Cod fish is one of the most expensive fish in the market and they were not very stingy in serving Cod fish that was quite a large thick chuck. The dried bean curd was mediocre though, only enhanced by the sauce which was not too bad. The broccoli was a little tasteless, luckily it's not the star of the dish.

Overall, if I had a choice, I don't think I will frequent this place often. Although parking is not a problem as there is free parking, the food there is purely mediocre and the only saving point is that it is quite high-class so the staff are pretty attentive.

When I first saw the side dish on the table at Mayim Chinese Cuisine, I literally thought it was kimchi. We tried their chilli oil wanton thinking it would taste the same as those of din tai fung and crystal jade. However to our surprise, the sauce for the wanton is black sweet sauce. It was so unique. The wanton is large and juicy and very meaty. It actually went well with the sweet sauce.

The dim sum at Yan Palace just keeps making you go back for it. This time round I went with my best friend, there were only two of us so the variety we ordered was not as many as the other visit. I must say their deep fried golden mushroom is really unique. I remembered the last I had this dish was in Taiwan one of the night market, never found such a dish in Singapore. It was my mother's birthday so the whole family headed to Yan Palace Restaurant for Dim Sum lunch. The variety they have here is pretty cool, they have plenty unique but nice dim sum. We also ordered their Steamed BBQ Pork Buns ($3.60) as well. The pau is soft and fluffy and light. They added considerable amount of filling into the Pau. The filling taste really good, there were only lean meat. It was not too dry as well. The sauce is very tasty too. It was good.

Their Steamed Cheong Fun with BBQ Pork ($4) is really good, the gravy was so tasty, it was a little sweetish and savoury. The char siew is very chewy and only use lean meat. The Cheong Fun is very chewy and smooth. As a whole, when eaten together was really good.

We ordered their Deep Fried Prawn Dumpling ($4), the prawns they used were very fresh and succulent. The dumpling is very crispy as well. It goes well with mayo. It was one of the nicest fried prawn dumpling I have eaten. One plate has only three pieces so we ordered 2 plates could it was so good.

Another dish I want to recommend is the Deep Fried Yam Ball with Lychee ($3.60). The lychee gives it a sour sweet flavour. The yam is very solid, rich in yam flavour. The crispy of the Yam ball is really delicious. The combination of yam and lychee is really interesting and it goes well.

The dim sum ladies are very attentive, when they see you just arrive, they will push to your table so you need not have to wait long for the food to arrive. Here are some of the food we ordered, 2 servings of Steamed Prawn Dumpling Ha Kow ($4 per serving), 2 servings of Steamed Chicken Claw with spicy sauce ($2.90 per serving), 2 servings of Steamed Crystalline Seafood Dumpling ($4 per serving), 1 serving of Pan fried beancurd skin roll ($4) and 3 servings of deep fried almond prawn balls with mango ($4.50 per serving). We did not order the normal siew mai and char siew pau cos it was pretty common, we wanted to try something new and everytime we finish a serving, we kept ordering back the same thing cos it was so good.

The Steamed Prawn Dumpling Ha Kow was really good, the prawns were super fresh and the meat was succulent and crunchy. One serving came in four which mean we only got one to eat so we ordered another one cos it was just not enough. The skin of the ha kow was not too thick, it has this elasticity and very chewy though it was not too thick.

I shared one serving with my mother, we simply love the sauce they marinated the chicken claw with, it was a little spicy but very flavourful. The chicken skin simply melts in your mouth. the price of one serving is so reasonable too, $2.90 for such quality food.

The steamed crystalline seafood dumpling was really good, the skin is similar to that of the ha kow, the filling inside is really good, love the freshness of the prawn, the meat was just simply so sweet. one serving only comes in three, luckily we ordered another one more serving. The bill came up to $50 plus which is pretty reasonable.

The deep fried almond prawn balls with mango I feel was the highlight of the day. They coated the prawn ball with almond flakes, the almond flakes make the ball very crunchy. inside the ball, they also added mango on top of the prawn. The mango was very fragrant and give it a unique taste. It was so good we ordered 3 servings.

It is also a bit dry,so i not really like it although it is nice too.

This blackpepper sauce used for this claypot dish would be even more perfect with white rice.

It was parent's birthday

We have the family fave Beijing Duck, Claypot Toufu, Sweet Sour Pork and Vegetable Mushroom.

The Beijing Duck is a MUST-TRY. Skin is thin and crispy. The sauce and chili for the wrap is thick and fragrant. Excellent.
For the duck meat, we got them to stir-fry with ginger and spring onion. It is tasty due to the oyster sauce used in frying and you can taste the juicy duck meat.

However, the claypot Toufu is a little disappointing as it taste like those from the coffeeshop. It is filled with lettuce, make me wonder if I am paying the right price.

The Sweet Sour Pork is another family's fave.Crispy boneless pork meat fried in sour and sweet sauce. You will be able to taste the distinct sauce and makes the pork super juicy. Nice!

The Mushroom Vegetable is also unique coz its oyster sauce is fragrant plus you will be able to taste the mushroom freshness as they are not over-cooked.
