Fish Soup - Food Fare ( Ang Mo Kio )

Fish soup is my all times favourite choice in foodcourt. Whenever I lost idea of what to eat, I just choose fish soup with rice, it solves my indecision of food issue.

Having patronised this stall for a few times, short queue is expected during peak time. I like my fish soup with non-fried fish slices and clear soup base. Then I can taste the original flavour. Their fish slices are fresh without fishy smell and generous cut in size. Soup is light and tasty. Furthermore, they give sufficient vegetables, bean curd and seaweed, it makes up the value. That is the main reason for my returning to them.

Malay rice
Smile 6 days ago

Nasi Padang Sederhana ( Raffles Place )

Sometimes, I like to have a switch on food choices. I am not a chilli eater, I hardly eat Indian and Malay food but I don't mind to have Malay food when I want to eat non-Chinese food.

Particularly i like the mutton radang, stir fry mussels and the deep fried fermented soy beans. If I have to eat it, they are the must order in my rice. I would think they are ordinary food to them as they are easily to buy from most of the Malay food stalls. Most of them cook the similar tastes. They are not too spicy to my tastes. I like the mussels the way they cook, chewy and without fishy smell. The deep fried fermented soy bean gives a crunch to the whole dish, I can't stop eating it.

Coffee fix
Smile 6 days ago

Starbucks ( Telok Blangah )

We knew we would spend a day in Universal Studio, we wanted to have a cup of good coffee to wake us up and refuel our energy. We have one of each house blend coffee and cappuccino. I particularly like the creamy cappuccino, it is smooth to my throat. One whole muffin is too much for me to go with the big cup of cappuccino, we shared it instead. It feels so good after the breakfast. We got full energy to start off our outing!

Quality ice cream
Smile 6 days ago

New Zealand Natural ( Orchard )

I don’t normally eat ice cream, unless it is a special occasion. I would rather eat gelato than ice cream as it claims that it is a healthier choice. When it talks about real ice cream, it has to be ice cream, it isn’t gelato can replace though.

Passed by this outlet and they would let you try a small spoon before buying. At first bite, I knew I would have it for sure. In the end, we bought a small tub instead of a small cup each. We have a feast on ice cream!

It really tastes real fruits bits, it is refreshing and additive. Service crew are friendly and allow us to try as many as we please! We couldn’t stop scooping it into our mouths, we finished it less than half an hour.

Cut up sashimi rice
Smile 6 days ago

Fresh Catch Dining Sakuraya ( West Coast )

This restaurant was recommended by a friend of mine. It is inexpensive and ingredients are air flown from Japan, so it is authentic and fresh (fish deliver on the day of arrival).

It is a casual Jap restaurant, it seems it is popular for families and residents around that area. We reached there slightly earlier than the norm lunch time, there weren’t too many patrons. I have the so-called value for money sashimi rice. Sashimi is cut up in pieces and quite a generous serving, it is almost filled up half of the bowl and another half is filled with rice. Although they may be the end bits or cut up pieces, they are equally fresh, it worth every cent in my opinion.

Service wise, it is just so so.

Sashimi rice
Smile 6 days ago

Sakae Sushi ( Tanjong Pagar )

I used to patronise this chain of restaurants for sushi fix. I liked their variety of sushi serving on the conveyor bell and most importantly prices were affordable. Then I stopped going for a long time due to some reason.

After knocking off and feeling famish, I wanted to have something light and filling. Sashimi is a good choice. I walked by Icon and found that they have an outlet there. It wasn’t too many dinners at around 6+pm, I thought it would get more people while reaching the dinner time, it wasn’t though, instead it was getting less and less. Anyway, it won’t bother me, as long as food is served fresh and good, I am happy.

I have a bowl of sashimi rice. Frankly, it is a bowl of ordinary Japanese sashimi rice, nothing to “wow” to but I have to say sashimi are fresh and rice texture is just right. Having said that it may not fill up a big stomach, it was just right to me.

Chips with sour cream and cheese
Smile 6 days ago

KFC ( Dhoby Ghaut )

To have this meal, it was because of the sour cream and cheese. I love chips dip with them, it fills my mouth and stomach with satisfaction. It also loaded tons of calories!

The whole meal comes with 2 pieces of crispy chicken, mashed potato, chips with sauces and a fizzy drink. It was such a satisfying meal with a really reasonable price. This location is always packed of patrons. It isn’t easy to get a seat though.

After the high calorie meal, I walked many rounds of Plaza Singapura to burn off some calories, I hoped!

Chilli Crab
Smile 6 days ago

Spring Court ( Chinatown )

My mom was here in visiting me. As she doesn’t eat much meat nowadays, she prefers seafood and vegetable more. So chilli crab was our best option and I wanted her to try this local dish.

After reading so many reviews for chilli crab, this one was getting the most positive reviews, furthermore it was near my place and didn’t need to travel to East Coast area.

We didn’t make reservation and reached there around 12 noon. The restaurant was quite packed already. The captain who served us was really polite, he brought us to our table and apologies for it was near the toilet, he said if there was table available, he could move us. Anyway, we were pleased for his thoughtfulness.

I ordered chilli crab, no doubt and checked on the captain for any recommendation. Actually, my eyes are bigger than my mouth, I want to order cold crab dish as well but the captain advises try it next time as the chilli crab is a big dish, it is well enough for the 2 of us. It seems popiah is one of their signature dish and I like popiah, why not have a try.

This popiah size is the biggest I have tried and of course charges are steep too. It has so many ingredients. Taste wise, it isn’t my type of popiah. I prefer kopitam or hawker’s popiahs, humble and yet flavouring.

We were impressed for the chilli crab dish. It was such a huge dish! The weight of the crab stated 1.5~1.8kg. We added 6 mini steamed buns to go with the chilli sauce. We liked the sauce, it wasn’t too spicy or too thick, the sauce itself was a winner already. We have our giant pincer first, it was so satisfying, the meat was bouncy and tasteful, it could tell that the crab was live before cook! When my mom took the crab shell and started eating the crab roe, I starred at her….then she ate half and gave the other half to me to enjoy! We all know crab roe is high in cholesterol, we should limit our consumption. Nevertheless, we managed to finish the whole crab. Half way through the meal, the captain came and asked us about the dishes, it was such a warm greet.

If it wasn’t the positive reviews, I wouldn't think that we could have chilli crab in a traditional Chinese restaurant, moreover, this restaurant is one of the oldest and famous in Chinese cuisine in Singapore.

We enjoyed our meal so much and gratify for our choice. We should try the cold crab dish on our next visit.

Vegetarian dish
Smile 6 days ago

Tung Lok Signatures ( Telok Blangah )

I like to come here for executive lunch, I have no doubt on their quality on food and service. This time round, I was alone and wanted to have something good. The worse was I didn’t have big appetite, I wanted to have more but I didn’t want to waste food. Therefore, I ordered just one plate of deep fried bean curd with mix mushrooms. A very simple vegetarian dish went with plain rice.

I am really choosy on gravy. If a dish can go without it, I am more delighted. I would say this was the only gravy I would love. The rich taste would bring out the mushrooms and bean curd taste a level higher. A deep fried bean curd, what does it expect normally? Nothing much, right? This one isn’t the same, you have to try it then you will know. My guess, it was slow fry till golden brown, the technique is difficult, the flame and oil temperature are precisely to be correctly set.

This is a place worth to spend for quality Chinese dishes.

Wasabi fried prawns
Smile 6 days ago

Crystal Jade Kitchen ( Serangoon )

I love wasabi!

Dining alone and I wanted to have a decent meal. This is the place I will go for usually. I like their authentic Cantonese dishes and prices are reasonable.

I used to have steam fish but I wanted to have a change this round. I ordered wasabi fried prawns with plain rice. It was piping hot when served, I couldn’t wait to try it. Wasabi was well blended with the thin crust on the prawn. Taste wise, it wasn’t overpower and it was just nice to taste bud. Prawn was crunchy and big enough for one mouthful. Overall it was a satisfying dish.

Service was usual, prompt and polite.

Labour day lunch
Smile 6 days ago

First Culinary ( Ang Mo Kio )

On the labour day, we wanted to eat something decent. My friend recommended ITE campus as students were not in, it could have peace and quiet walking around the campus. We decided to try this Chinese restaurant. 2 of us occupied a small table, it was big enough and seating wise, it was spacious.

We didn’t have big stomach on that day. We wanted to have something for munching while we were chatting. So we ordered braised duck wing and their signature fry rice noodle for carbohydrate fix. The braised duck wing is an appetiser and portion is generous. Taste wise, it seems it has been braising for quite a number of days. Meat is too soft for chewing. Each wing has cut up for easy eating, actually, we don’t mind it serves in full wing, that is the fun of eating this dish.

We both liked the fry rice noodle. It wasn’t oily at all and yet rice noodle could be separate, it wouldn’t stick to each slice. The best was it could taste the wok fragrance of which home cooking could not achieve.

Service wise, so far so good, no complain.

2-pc Chicken meal
Smile 6 days ago

KFC ( Telok Blangah )

Whenever I wanted to have something deep fried, KFC fried chicken will flash on my mind. Frankly, I wouldn’t patron other places for deep fried chicken, I am a loyal fan of KFC, to be precise it is deep fried crispy chicken only. So far, KFC has not disappointed me for their deep fried chicken. I didn’t try their burgers at all, therefore, no comment on them.

It was late morning when I reached Vivo city and decided to settle my lunch early in avoiding the lunch crowd. As usual, I placed my order and waited for a short while, my food was served. There have few patrons only. I could enjoy my food peacefully and quietly. Once it filled with families, kids might run around and making so much noise. It wouldn’t paranoid me though. The whole atmosphere has changed.

Coleslaw is too ordinary and nothing to mention, veggie is crispy as usual. Mashed potato is something that I don’t understand! It has a thick layer of brown sauce but I can’t identify the taste, it is tasteless to me. I wouldn’t eat the sauce and always left it behind.

Chicken is crispy and meat is succulent, even though I am eating the chicken breast, it won’t be tough and dry. Standard maintains always.

Heng Hua fry bee hoon
Smile 6 days ago

Pu Tien ( Hougang )

There are so many dinning choices in Hougang mall, it is definitely spoilt by choice. Dinning alone on that evening, I just wanted to have something simple and quick. Check out the Kopitam, there were not so crowded. Walked towards my favourite stall, Pu Tien Heng Hua, there were few people standing around this stall. Compare to other stalls, they looked quiet. It seems this stall is getting popular. Follow the queue, the lady who took the orders was fast, she would remember our orders and collected money at the same time. There is/are someone inside doing all the cooking.

This was my second patrons, I didn’t come to this area about 2 years already. I love their fry thin noodle, it was one of the best I have tried some 2 years ago. This round I ordered fry bee hoon, comparatively, it wasn’t soupy like fry thin noodle, probably bee hoon absorbs too much soup, it will become soggy, it will affect the texture. Taste wise, it was light, prawns was naturally sweet, clam was tasteless. It wasn’t too oily though. I didn’t taste any MSG. That is what I like the most, after the meal, it won’t feel any quilt on having too much oil, salt and MSG. Sure, I will go back if I am around that area for a meal.

Soy Bean Biscuit
Smile 6 days ago

Mr Bean ( Serangoon )

I would think Mr Bean’s soy bean biscuit is considered a healthier choice for snack. When they first lounged, they offer at least 6 types of fillings for choice and there were only 2 types of fillings on that day, one was salted green bean and another one was pineapple. I chose salted green bean. The crust is crumbly and lightly, it has a mild butter flavour, filling is well balance of salt and sweet. Standard and size have not changed. It is still one of my best choices for snack.

Meow Shan Wang durian Ice Cream

Four Seasons Durians ( Serangoon )

Going window shopping, the best to go along the tiring way is having some finger snacks. It won’t fill up the stomach and yet it can fulfil the food craving for a while. So that it can have more time in shopping! Anyway, passed by this corner and smelled durian, there were some people holding the soft ice cream around the area. Out of my curiosity and check it out, followed the short queue and bought this Meow Shan Wang durian soft ice cream. Firstly sniff it, secondly taste it, it really tasted like Meow Shan Wang durian, most importantly, the texture was super fine and smooth. I will eat again if I want to have quick fix for durian!
