The outlet is known to be the one that serves the best warm molten chocolate lava cake in Singapore. Looking at the rows of molten chocolate cakes on display, there is a range of different flavours. I decide on the mini molten chocolate which costs $10 for 3 pieces. Each piece is quite small and about 2 mouthfuls. I am disappointed that there is no lava flow of chocolate inside. Maybe I should warm it up as recommended by the staff.

As for the brownie, i am not a fan of it, after eating 3 mouthful, i gave up. It was too sweet and the texture of the cake is hard.

Will not go back again.

On a good side, the size of molten cakes are just nice to enjoy the flavour, yet not too sinful. Great for ladies out there!

Here for a healthy treats baking workshop conducted by cafe owner, Celine, herself. A vivacious character, she makes you feel like you're right at home here in her shop. A family who dropped in for some brunch was tended to by Celine, talking to their child and making sure the food is to their taste. It's this kind of personal service that has become a dying breed in our society today.

Generously sharing her recipe on the most popular non-chocolate dessert at their shop, we set out to try our hands at the various stages of baking their shop's own carrot cake.

While waiting, I had a flat white ($5) redolent with the fragrance of single origin beans from Papa Palheta and a blueberry crumble muffin she made specially for us.

Messing about with cream cheese frosting, we got to frost our own cupcakes and try the extras. The carrot cake was moist and light. Complimented with the savoury sweet and rich cream cheese frosting. This was a dream. And she very endearingly prepared their original mini lava cakes retailing at $3.90 instore for us to takeaway.

I popped the lava cake into the microwave for 10 seconds and as the name aptly implies, it flowed out like hot lava after i cut it up for sharing at home.

Perfect place for a lazy Sunday brunch. Quiet yet cosy. I'll be sure to check out their new outlet at Craft Bakery Holland village.

I did not have the mocha, but those who had it said it was sufficiently sweet from the chocolate sauce yet retaining the alluring scent of coffee. The coffee beans used by them are from Papa Palheta, which is simply aromatic and fragrant.

The Affogato that I had was brilliantly blended. The French Vanilla had a distinctively rich vanilla flavour and totally made a great match with the aromatic espresso, it is definitely an enjoyment to have.

The Molten Lava Cakes were literally a volcano waiting to erupt. A single cut made and all the chocolate starts flowing out like a slow erupting volcano. Besides the chocolate, the Bailey’s one also had Bailey’s sauce which carried a very strong alcoholic flavour that was just simply seductive mixed with chocolate. 3 inches of pure pleasure, I would say.

The Belgian Waffles are particularly crispy but lacks a bit of volume in fluffiness. It certainly felt fragrant but the texture could have been better on the inside. One thing we did not know was that the scoop of ice-cream added was at a-la carte price even though it came with a waffle; something to note if you are ordering them with ice-cream.

I think I’ve been subconsciously telling myself to search for all chocolate desserts available out there that my flimsy wallet can spare. I’ve eaten more lava cakes this year than any others. Where some have disappoint me so badly that I don’t even think it’s blog-worthy, there are a handful of cafes/restaurants/shops that never fails to make my soul gratified with a capital G.

And one of such places I’m referring to has got to be 3 Inch Sin. Just like Max Brenner and Laurent Chocolatier, 3 Inch Sin is also another must-go places if you’re a chocolate lover living and exploring all the cracks and crevices of this isle. Personally, I do not think there’s a need to compare who does lava cakes better since they craft and bake their desserts with their own chocolate recipe although out of the three places, I have to admit that 3 Inch Sin is the most affordable with prices under $8 as compared to the other two specialty shops.

Upon entering the shop located amidst the building which we call Millenia Walk, one would be greeted by an array of chocolate desserts sitting by the counter just waiting for that moment when your lips touches them. Such is the chocolate paradise that we don’t get to see but we yearn for it every single day.

Then came the lava cake, served warm with a scoop of strawberry field to complete this wonderful afternoon tea affair with my lovely girlfriend. I’m thinking the lava cakes is as they say, 3 inch? The cake was moist and crumbly which is typical of any lava cakes but unlike the name, the core didn’t really flow as it should which was rather disappointing but still a great piece considering that they only use Valrhona’s Chocolate which is said to be one of the best if not THE premium grade of black gold you can ever grasp. Just joy. Only a true chocolatier can ever apprehend.

If you’re looking for an affordable lava cakes in town, try 3 Inch with their sinfully made lava cakes. There’s said to be 11 flavours to pick from. Ranging from the fruity Bitter Orange and Lemon to nutty Hazelnut and Peanut Butter and to the adult’s extend, Baileys and Cherries Jubilee. It’s one flavour down and 10 more to go! And I shall leave those 10 in time to come…

“It’s only three inch. It’s only a few bites. But it will hook you forever…”

PS: Do note that the outlet at Cluny Court, Bukit Timah is closed.

3-inch sin, a dessert cafe borne out of the passions of a brother-sister duo, first started out at Cluny Court specialising in molten chocolate cakes made with premium Valrhona chocolate. They've since expanded their repertoire of cakes offered, mostly still chocolate based, and added a few light bites into their menu and opened another outlet at Millenia Walk.

The cafe at Millenia Walk is very quiet (it's probably got something to do with the fact that there's very little foot traffic on a Saturday afternoon), and has a very appealing homely and casual feel about it.

We had:

1) Raspberry Molten Valrhona Cake ($6.50) with French Vanilla Bean Ice-cream ($3). They've got like 11 different flavours of molten choco cakes! The raspberry provided deep fruity notes to the bittersweet chocolate, while the comforting vanilla ice-cream contrasted well with the richness of the warm molten chocolate.

2) Mini-Me ($4.50) a super dense chocolate cake slathered with dark Valrhona couverture chocolate. Despite the seemingly richness of the cake, this managed to stay balanced and nuanced. We also added a scoop of the French Vanilla Bean Ice-cream ($3) to the lush confectionery

3) Mushroom, Bacon & Cheese Sandwich ($7.50) salty crisp bacon with shitake and button mushrooms, cheese and lettuce finished off with toasty wholegrain bread. Simple and wholesome straightforward stuff.

This indulgent drink served with thick dark chocolate sauce and topped with coco powder. The chocolate sauce did add fragrance to the drink, but coming from a super chocolate lover point of view, this drink isn't obscenely rich, but the sweetness was just right.

The cake was soft, moist and not too sweet. Valrhona chocolate was rich and luscious. The center was thick and sticky, it will be utter satisfying if the centre was more ooey-gooey.

Same type of chocolate as the Original, except there were whole cherries in the molten cake.

I likes the distinct kick of alcohol in the cherries and the subtle cherry sweetness, however the centre was too creamy and thick. Personally, I will prefer a liquid lusciously melted centre oozes out of the warm cake (like molten chocolate cake from Pietro Ristorante Italiano!).

- My Opinion
I stumble upon DanielFoodDiary post on this cafe sometime back and decided to bring Lena (also a chocolate lover) to try the Baileys Premium Molten Cake and Royal Chocolate Cake.

We went there with excitement but was filled with disappointment as both items was not available for the day! We were curious why the highly raved cakes are not available on a daily base. The staff said they don't prepare all types of cakes everyday to prevent wastage as customers don't buy them everyday and we just have to try our luck because she don't know which day it will be available.

Feeling even more disappointed, we walk away to look around for other cafe. But after awhile Lena decided to try the Original molten cake because she can't stop thinking of the oozing chocolate. This time a different staff was on duty and we asked why the Baileys molten cake and Royal chocolate cake was not available, and she said it was sold out.

We were there around 3.30pm, so which staff is proving the correct info? I think it's best that you call before heading down to avoid disappointment.

I had the Bailey’s flavoured choc molten cake. ($7.50 for alcoholic flavours)

As the cake was heated up in the oven, the smell of chocolate permeated the whole shop. The smell of warm, luscious, mouth-watering chocolate really whets your appetite even before the cake is set on the table. The top is slightly more set than the soft warm core inside. Every mouthful was pure chocolate bliss. It isn’t sweet at all, so it’s really good quality valrhona chocolate you’re consuming, not some diabetes inducing sugar confection. Only 2 drawbacks. The bailey’s essence was not enough for me. It was mainly concentrated in the core, so the sides didn’t really have any bailey’s taste. And after eating most of the cake, it felt really dry. The staff recommended adding an ice cream topping initially, but I refused. But now I understand how a topping of ice cream would improve your enjoyment of the molten cake, especially for people who choose the Original flavour. I’m sure Chocolate connoisseurs will scoff at this idea, but it would have improved my experience. One scoop of ice cream will set you back by another $3.

So I’m not sure if I would spend around $10 for a molten cake+ice cream. It’s a little expensive but I guess if you need your varlhona fix and would like to spend some quiet time away from the crowds, it would be a great idea to drop by!

When I was there, waiting for Jasper Aston Lim and Melissa Koh, the aroma from the oven, the freshly baked scent, was killing me. I MUST EAT NOW. The thought of robbing the cakes crossed my mind.

Decor: The place has a L-shaped sitting area with a bar table at the back. While the focus here is on the food, the decor could be improved, maybe have a theme

The shop specializes in molten chocolate cakes ($6.50 for non-alcoholic, $7.50 for alcoholic). Celine, 1/2 of the owners, left her cushy job to pursue her passion. Very courageous and admirable. She was trained at Cordon Bleu and interpreted the cakes with molten middles in souffle cups. She uses 70% valrhona dark chocolate.

There are 11 flavors and we tried Original, Peanut Butter, White Chocolate, Bitter Orange, Raspberry, Lemon, Cherries Jubilee and Hazelnut. We all had our favorites but strangely no one picked the Original as his or her favorites.

Jasper’s favorite is raspberry and Melissa’s is white chocolate. However, raspberry, white chocolate, bitter orange and hazelnut didn’t work for me because the favors didn’t come through. This is partly because the flavors are concentrated in the center and I ate from the side (my bad). When I feedback-ed that the favors could be stronger, Celine explained that it may affect the overall taste. She knows her stuff. Don’t play play.

I strongly recommend Peanut Butter, Lemon and Cherries Jubilee. Peanut butter is ALWAYS awesome, especially with chocolate; this was thick and chunky–like how I like my men to be. The Lemon was a huge surprise. Lemon and chocolate Who would have thought But the cake wasn’t sour, it was mildly sweet. There was a strong citrus fragrance, very refreshing. Perks you up from your afternoon lethargy. The alcoholicCherries Jubilee came with whole cherries. There was a subtle cherry-sweetness that pervaded the entire cake and the bitterness from the alcohol added another dimension to the cake.

In general, the cakes are (1) the texture was crispy on the top, but soft inside. And in the mouth, the cake felt very smooth. (2) they are not overly sweet. In fact, they are only mildly sweet, so the focus is on the quality of the chocolate.

The cakes are available for take-away. Just warm it up in the microwave for 15-20 seconds.

New to the menu are cakes, tarts and ice creams.

The ice creams ($3.50) are customized to be less sweet so that they could go well with the cakes. There are seasonal favors so ask for them. In general, vanilla ice cream goes well with chocolate molten cakes.

Mogador ($7) is a chocolate cake with dark chocolate mousse and chocolate sponge, glazed with–not chocolate!–raspberry. Most SIngaporeans, including me, have a predilection for airy Japanese cakes. The cakes from Celine–trained at Cordon Bleu–are more European. It was light but chocolate cakes in general couldn’t be as light as Japanese cakes. It tasted a bit like seaweed to me! Another friend tasted it too. I thought it was quite unique, surprising and fun.

Perhaps there was an overdose of chocolate, so I cannot really taste the chocolateness in the Dark Side ($6), a chocolate tart.

Overall, I’d still stick to the molten chocolate cakes, one of the best I’ve tasted, a scoop of ice cream, a cup of hot tea and a book on a lazy afternoon. Hey, if my hero Brad LadyIronChef Lau declares it’s the best molten chocolate cake in Singapore, it is the best in Singapore ok!
