Fried Butter Calamari ($8.50)

Ah loy thai 6

Never once have we had calamari fried in this manner, but we have to say that it tasted good. The butter was fragrant, and the calamari wasn’t too rubbery to the extent where it would be hard to chew. It was slightly sweet and salty at the same time, loved it!

Pandan Chicken ($10.00)

Ah loy thai 3

The pandan chicken was HUGE. Either there wasn’t enough seasoning, or that the seasoning that they used was very light. It had a bit of a sour taste occasionally which was kind of weird. Other than that, the pandan chicken was nicely fried with a few charred bits here and there.

I have to start by disclaiming that this is not a story about authentic Thai food. This is another story of how I found a gem by following the long queue. Ah Loy Thai located at the basement of Tampines Mall always had a queue every time I passed by. Like always. Being the typical Singaporean, I made the assumption that the queue means good food. I am a good follower. The pineapple fried rice ($7, below) had a wok hei taste, and the pineapples, prawns and raisins were a great infusion to entice

The pineapple fried rice ($7, below) had a wok hei taste, and the pineapples, prawns and raisins were a great infusion to entice the tastebuds. The eggs were to die-for. Although it tasted more like Chinese Zhi Char fried rice, it made me wanted to go Bangkok immediately.

The Tom Yam seafood soup ($7.50, below) was really spicy. One sip and it set my tongue and belly to flames even faster than I could say "sa-wa-dee-kha". And I think they must have been best friends with their supplier because there were a lot of fresh ingredients: prawns, mushroom, lemongrass and chock-ful of squids. It was like a bottomless pot of ingredients. The soup brought out the essence of the ingredients and the spiciness was well balanced by the sourness.

Loved the Phad Thai ($7, below) which was well done : not too oily and had a wok hei taste to it too. Umani packed thin flat noodles were flavorful and delivered the punch. Again, generous amount of eggs, prawns and beanspouts. This is like my perfect Phad Thai.

And before we thought the meal would not get any better, the butter calamari ($8, below) arrived. Hail the butter calamari! Every bite was a burst of sweet and savory. Although it's sinful, it's addictive and tasty. 5/5

Meat is very important in a meal so we ordered the pandan chicken ($10, below). Hmmm the chicken was a little tough (frozen meat?). Would give this a miss if we had known.

Although the food was more like Chinese Zhi Char rather than Thai Thai in my opinion, it's really irresistible and tasty and had us swooning. These were really simple, nothing over the top dishes but that's all it takes to make us contented. And also make us work harder at the gym thereafter. And all these for only $13 per pax which is value for money! There is no service charge or Gst. It would have cost more if we went to other Thai restaurants. There is another outlet at Bugis Shaw towers but I haven't tried it before. Despite the queues during meal times, this is stuff that I would not regret queuing for. Ok I need to wipe off the drool on my keyboard now.

This is place left a deep impression upon me because the food was so aromatic and so rich in flavour! In that meal, I tasted sweet, salty, spicy, sour flavours which complement each other very well. The thai ice milk was WOW. Superduper good place to eat.

I have tried the outlet at Shaw Tower, and have to say that the hygiene level here is much better. The queue at both outlets are about the same though- long!

I like the food at the Shaw Tower's outlet and decided to give this a try. Ordered the white basil chicken, it was awesome! Very fragrant and tasty, the bamboo shoots were very crunchy too. Next up was the pineapple rice. I didn't like that the rice was slightly too sticky. Also, it didn't really have much taste to it, so i wouldn't recommend it actually!

Last dish was the butter calamari, and everyone had better try it!! The calamari were fried to perfection and were really juicy! The best part was that the butter sauce was really creamy and went really well with the calamari pieces!

Last not but least, our favorite tom yum soup with thick base! There are mushroom, fish and vege in it. The soup taste so good that eating it with plain rice is enough to me already. Haha.

This has become my favourite Thai restaurant! (Used to be Nakhon Kitchen) It is very value for money too, no gst and service charge

if you are a Thai food lover, you should come here and try at least once!

Ah Loy Thai is a comfortable small Thai restaurant at tampines mall basement that provides a delightful experience and authentic Thai food. The food here is relatively inexpensive, costing around 6-8 dollars per plate for vegetables/stir fried basil with pork, etc. Taste-wise, the food here is pretty decent. The olive fried rice was pretty good because the wok-hei was evident, better than their pineapple rice which is average.

The sweet and sour thai style masked the muddy smell of the fish. Interesting plate design!

Tasty crunchy fresh Kai Lan goes well with the other dishes.

I was fourth in the queue, the waiting time was about 10 mins to get to the cashier and another 5mins to settle payment and get seated. The restaurant has very simple coffee shop type of setup, no frills and efficient. They have an open concept kitchen located at the middle of the restaurant.

Dishes serving was very fast here. My drink and dishes came within 15mins time.

Traditional Thai Milk Tea (red) with ice $2.20. This was quite nice, smooth and flavorful. It is a tad sweet so it must be consume after stirring it for a while for the ice to melt and dilute it a little bit.

Seafood Tom Yum Soup $7.50. The serving was quite huge, enough for two to share. Soup base was not overly spicy but was rather tangy, just nice for me. Some may find it not spicy enough though. Seafood and mushroom was fresh...slurp!

Thai Fried Kway Teow (Phad Thai) $7.00. Serving was quite big too. Rice noodles was quite springy and moist. The sauce was sweet but not spicy enough, need to add chili flakes to spice it up. Only 3pcs of prawns were found in the dish, along with generous serving of micro shrimps (the bits of red color stuff), beancurd cubes, egg and tau geh. Overall, quite delish.

I really like Ah Loy Thai because it has reasonably-priced (compared to other Thai food chains) food which are pretty delicious. I tried the Tampines Mall branch since this is an offshoot of the Shaw Towers one and the standards are equally high. I ordered the fried butter squid. Excellent. I also ordered the standard fare kangkong and the sambal was still quite strong.

Was very glad that they decided to open a new outlet in the East. I have become a fan of ah loy thai ever since I've tried the branch at Shaw towers. Absolutely love the butter calamari. Tried the pineapple rice, was average; phad thai was average as well. They do not charge service charge, hence it is affordable and reasonably priced. The tampines outlet is rather small, so do go early during peak hours to queue.
