It was the wonderful BBQ pork I had on my last visit that tipped the decision to revisit Canton i in favour of another nearby Chinese restaurant.

I still like Canton i's "modernised" take on traditional dining decor. Just that tables did seem a little too small this time round - signs that I've been growing horizontally?

BBQ Pork - The vote changer. The ever delicious BBQ pork - 50% fat, 50% meat, making for a melt in your mouth treat. Drizzled in nice, not cloyingly sweet yet mildly savoury sauce, it was the pièce de résistance of the evening. And to prove our point, we had another serving of it.

Lychee Wood Smoked Duck - One of Canton i's signature dishes, the smoked duck had a nice crisp to its skin whilst retaining the moisture in its meat. Honestly I don't know the significance of smoking it with lychee wood but overall the duck was good.

Beancurd with Luffa (Loofah) in Abalone Sauce - Loofah or 胜瓜 are vines and what is served is usually the fruit, which is eaten as a vegetable and popular in parts of Asia and Africa. This being the 2nd time I'm eating it, I still can't quite come to terms with the rawness of it but I'm still open to having another go. The beancurd was smooth and silky with a nice savoury taste to it, much better than my previous visit.

Egg White with Scallops & Fish - This dish was quite a disappointment. There was a lingering fishiness to it and definitely nausea inducing. Not my cup of tea.

Long Beans Fried with Minced Pork - Aside from being a little too oily, I loved this dish. The beans were cooked just right - crunchy with a nice burst of moisture and pairing well with the minced meat. There just wasn't enough to go around.

The total bill for 5 pax (inclusive of 2 bowls of noodles that didn't make it to this writeup and drinks) was almost $230. Rather expensive if you ask me because of the smallish portions but food quality was definitely above average. I will definitely return, if I am in the mood for decadent char siew of course.

I visited this restaurant on Sunday during lunch hour. Although, the restaurant was packed the queue's waiting time was not too long, it's about 10 minutes. I recommend those who are from Hong Kong and those who want to bring their colleagues especially from Hong Kong to have a visit of this restaurant.

I had sour and spicy soup while my friend had a pot of soup of the day (it happened to be radish and pork ribs soup that night). They were generous with the ingredients. You can find shredded tofu, mushrooms, radish and minced meat in them. It tasted extremely good especially when it was a rainy night we visited the restaurant.

Another dish to recommend was the salt and pepper fried tofu. It was an appetizer, tasted really delicious. The tofu was crispy on the outside and really soft and sweet on the inside.

Generally the food was not too bad but the price was on the high side. The soup cost about $8 per pax. We paid about $42 per pax for the meal.

We visited Canton-i because I had quite a good experience there. This time, we just ordered something simple and I had a bowl of their signature prawn wanton mee and it costs me $9.80. However, the wanton mee tasted average only. Although the noodles were springy and the stock was okay, I had eaten better ones at a much lower price. The total bill was quite expensive as they charged $4 for a cup of oolong tea, another $3.50 for the braised peanuts. Not forgetting the wet towel that costs $1 each

Wow, I was really impressed by the roasted pig. It was so delicious and it tasted so goos just like what I had before in HK. The dim sum items were generally okay in my own standards. However, there were some special dim sum that we cannot find in other outlets like crystal jade.

The decoration of the restaurant was modern yet it gave a very homely and comfortable feeling. It is a great place for gathering. As my friend's family had patronised the restaurant a few times before, the manager actually recognised them and thus can provide suggestions as to what to order.

As we are hungry by that time, we ordered a lot of dim sum but half way though, we were already 90% full. Thinking that we still have a lot to stuff ourselves, the manager came and informed that she had stopped the order for the other items as she felt that we were all full. What good service it was. There was still food left and we had to pack the rest of the food that were on the table.

Overall, the service was good and the environment was clean and bright. In the background, old cantonese songs were being played and how I loved those songs. It was indeed a good place. However, one must note that the food items' prices are not in the cheap range. It is slightly more expensive.

If you ask me whether I will go again. YES, definitely cos the place is very comfortable but most probably I will go with friends during gathering session or special occasions. Thumbs up

We were enticed by the $1++ soya sauce chicken offer dangled by Canton-i in conjunction with DBS credit cards. Us and a ton of other people as well, judging by the long queue that had formed by 6pm on a Saturday evening. If you are not interested in queuing, reservations would probably be recommended.

Hailing from neighbouring Malaysia, Canton-i's Singapore outlet is located on the 3rd level of swanky ION Orchard. The interior is awash in white with hues of red radiating from bird cage lamps hanging from the ceiling - traditional in a fun sort of way. Wooden tables and chairs complete the whole outlook.

Roasted Meat Combination - The roasted meats (烧腊) are apparently a signature of Canton-i. And it's honestly not difficult to understand why. The BBQ pork (叉烧) was literally melt in your mouth with a high fat to meat ratio (50%-50%). Absolutely heart stopping (literally!) but simply delightful, especially with the little charred bits along the edges and the robust sweet sauce that didn't overwhelm.
I wasn't too taken by the Roasted pork (烧肉) though, seeing that I've had better ones at Imperial Treasure Cantonese. That's not to say it wasn't any good though. The skin had a noticeable (and audible!) crisp but as the fat to meat ratio was very high, it left a greasy aftertaste in my mouth which was a little overbearing in my humble opinion.

Soya Sauce Chicken - Call us cheapo but this was the main reason why we were at Canton-i; for the $1++ soya sauce chicken. And what a disappointment it turned out to be. The meat was tender but I honestly didn't find it anything out of the ordinary. It tasted like chicken with a hint of sugar sweetness, which sort of defied my preconceived notion that soya sauce chicken should be salty. I probably haven't eaten much soya sauce chicken to know but it wasn't exactly my cup of tea.

Long Beans Fried with Minced Pork - Not many places do this dish well and Canton-i falls into the minority. The long bean was fried till crunchy while retaining a wee bit of moisture, boasting a wonderful hint of wok hei and topped with savoury minced pork. An excellent dish, but only if you aren't adverse to oil.

Beancurd with Luffa (Loofah) in Abalone Sauce - This is the first time I've ever eaten luffa/loofah (胜瓜) and I must say that it was rather interesting. Soft with a mildly raw vegetable taste that hits you towards the end. I can't say that I'm a fan of it but I wouldn't mind having another go at it, especially when paired with the flavourful and not too starchy abalone sauce. The beancurd was egg based and came across as smooth and silky. Pity about the lack of savouriness though.

The 3 of us chalked up a bill of about $82, which was honestly a little on the high side considering that the soya sauce chicken was a mere $1. Sky juice is chargeable at $1++/pax and so are the wet towels and tidbits, all pretty much standard stuff at a Chinese restaurant (save for the water though but they do tell you upfront that it's not free). However, the quality of food is undeniable and service is decent, making it a viable, albeit pricier alternative to Imperial Treasure Noodle & Congee House a couple of floors down.

How would a Malaysian chain serving Cantonese cuisine fare? Would it be up to the mark or would it stay "Malaysia Truly Asia"? FreshGrads was recently attracted by the cleverly placed Steamed Pig Buns advertisements in ION and checks Canton-i out…

THE FOOD:

First came the XO Carrot Cake, which was crunchy and well sautéed in XO sauce though we know of similar dishes done better elsewhere.

Next, the signature dish of Prawn Wanton Noodles consists of springy noodles and fat wantons bursting with flavour. The ingredients for this dish is said to be imported from Hong Kong. But again, it is not distinctive enough for me to return to the restaurant for.

What would make us return to Canton-i for would be the porridge. We specially loved the silky smooth and creamy porridge. According to the server, it consists of the three different grains of Japanese pearl rice, Australian thin rice, Thai fragrant rice and with dried scallops added for sweetness. The chefs start preparing the porridge at 7am daily. Perhaps that is why porridge at Canton-i is much thicker and better than that of Crystal Jade. The you tiao was also excellently crispy.

Another hit was the Roast Pork and Roast Duck combined platter. Both wood-fired meats were perfectly executed. The skin had the crucial crispiness to it, while the meat is moist and tender. Definitely something we would return for as well.

And finally arrives the adorable Steamed Pig Buns. Each order of the buns comes in pairs. The red-bean filled buns were tasty but nothing to rave about. Still, it served its purpose of attracting customers, especially kids, to the restaurant. Another dim sum you should keep in mind is the Steamed Golden Egg Yolk Custard Bun but do beware of the warm liquid egg yolk that spills out as you take a bite. Diners should also note that dim sum ends at 5pm to prevent disappointment.

THE MOOD:

White birdcages, pretty butterflies motifs and flora prints adorn the interior of Canton-i, intended to bring it to a garden-like atmosphere. The male species, however, might just be a little put off by the predominantly pink and white decor.

We were puzzled by the rumours of flies in Canton-i - how did those flies get into such a high-class, air-conditioned shopping mall and up three levels to the restaurant. We were fortunate enough to find Canton-i fly-free with brisk service when we visited.

However, diners might want to think twice before heading to Canton-i well above the basements of ION - its prices might deter you. Though its dishes are slightly costlier than Crystal Jade for similar cuisine, they are tastier as well. DBS Card members may fray the cost with a DBS promotion from now to 31 December 2010. With a purchase of above $100, members will receive a $10 DBS voucher.
