Fermented Beancurd or Smelly Tofu as it is more popularly called, is like Durian - you either like it or you hate it. Mini Star has been making Fermented beancurd in the Geylang vicinity for the longest time. Unlike in Hong Kong or Taiwan, you can't really located the shop by following the stench - it seems like the Authorities made them installed state-of-the-art ventilation system to get rid of them. The fermented beancurd ($4 per piece) was deep-fried to a light crisp on the outside while it’s moist and soft inside. Served with sweet sauce and chili sauce with slivers of cucumber, it really isn't smelly at all.For those of you who chose to skip the fermented beancurd. Do try the duck meat pancake ($7), duck meat stuffed into chinese styled pancake and fried to ultimate crispiness. If you are an adventurous foodie, try the fermented beancurd at Mini Star. The smell might be a little overwhelming at first, but once you tried it, you will just keep coming back for more! continue reading

The one adn only smelly tofu shop left in Singapore. Not as good as those that you find in Taiwan, but yeah.. there's no standard to compete against here in Singapore due to little competition.Be greeted with the wonderful smell of smelyl tofu, i REALLY can't understand why people don't love this delicious crispy tofu that's super juicy and it has this unexplainable taste in the sauce..the lightings made me want to sleep, the shop's very old and traditional.we also ordered a bowl of porridge to be shared among 3 peopleand this pig intestine is crispy and cooked differently (deep fried)what's inside the tofu??? Looks like a lot of 'airy' pacs so it's not really filling! two pieces of tofu = $4. :'( that's quite expensive!!! continue reading

From the menu, we order the standard fermented beancurd, 1 bowl of sour spicy soup and 1 bowl of different soup noodles. Initially, we couldn’t smell much of the fermented beancurd, until they start to fry it. And when it came, the smell was not really enough, the vinegar-seasoned cabbage was quite little and placed with the chilli instead of with the beancurd. But the sour spicy soup was special to me and for that alone, it very appetising and not sour at all. Although it very red in color but not spicy at all. My friend find the soup noodles nice, with hers having braised chicken wing and fried fishballs etc in it, the taste was a bit salty. The noodles was springy as well. Overal, the food was not bad. continue reading

My first try on Fermented bean curdThe first plate that came, sliced stinkies. Crispy, but not as smelly as I thought. Not bad, quite juicy even though they are sliced. Then came the cube stinkies. Crispy and very very juicy; they literally drool themselves out in my mouth! Lol! Smellier than the first plate, and I'm pleased. Ordered soft shell crab cake to try as well... Not anywhere near impressive...Fried golden mushrooms... Too oily for my liking, but the interesting thing is that they served it with deep fried cai bo... continue reading
