I’m lucky to be living in an estate with hawker centres and coffee shops in close proximity 24/7. But it was also disappointing that there wasn’t any decent fish soup here until I chanced upon Mr Teh Tarik eating house at Blk 608 Ang Mo Kio Ave 5 (where Botak Jones used to be located) a few months back. Mr Teh Tarik is a halal certified coffee shop/food court with several outlets island-wide. It offers a good mix of local Singaporean food, most if not all, cooked by our Malay friends. At Mr Teh Tarik Ang Mo Kio, you’ll find nasi padang with a variety of tasty Malay-style dishes, nasi ayam (chicken rice), wonton noodles, fish soup, tze char (stir-fries), nasi briyani, indian rojak and a drink stall that serves interesting concoctions and refreshing beverages.

My favourite has got to be the fish soup (sop ikan) stall. Using rich-flavoured fresh stock and ground ikan billis that is only spooned into the stock while cooking upon ordering, the soup itself is simply scrumptious. The fish slices (I think they use batang fish) are fresh and the other accompaniments of vegetables, tofu cubes, tomato wedges and black seaweed just add texture and colour to the dish. Portion is generous. My husband thinks it’s just standard. But each time we count the fish slices in our respective bowls when we eat separately, it seems mine would always have extra pieces than my husband’s! Maybe the Malay lady at the stall gives me a tiny incentive because I’m a regular customer? Maybe it’s just sheer luck!

I've tried some of their teas and coffee. The tea flavor is extremely aromatic, it gives a nice whiff that engulfs your nostrils - the taste is consistent too (over the period I have been here) There are also sandwiches and curry puffs available for something light to fill the early stomach. It's open air and smoking is prohibited so...it's really quite morning fresh air. Not really a coffee connoisseur, so I'll let other experts comment on that.

Went to tabao prata from Mr Teh Tarik! This was recommended by my friend who says their prata is very nice and would not lose out to the jalan kayu prata! I bought 2 ko-song and one egg prata to eat. Although it's not very hot when i brought it home, the warmth is still there. I ate the egg prata first. Very nice and fulfilling, you can taste the whole egg in the prata. The kosong one is just as nice as well The prata is very soft not hard and dry like some that i ate before. I believe it's due

The prata is very soft not hard and dry like some that i ate before. I believe it's due to the piak piak and tossing done by the prata chef. Also not to be racist by most nice pratas are made by the indian muslims. After finishing all, i feel that it's very filling and a great brunch to have

Our first time to dine at this coffee shop. We were presented with the menu rather quickly upon seated down. We decided to give the Seafood Horfun for $4.00 a go. It was served in 5 minutes with fork and spoon rather than the usual chopsticks. The taste was passable with a slight hint of wok hei. The ingredients found within were shredded chicken meat, slices of fish cake, prawns and veggies. They replaced the usual pork with chicken as this is a halal certified coffee shop.
