I was rather intrigued by the dish - deep fried... kang kong?! The menu didn't state that it came with tempura prawns and fish (no wonder it is $13!). Besides the usual mookata, I ordered this and shared with my friend. We were unable to finish it as it was too much. The kang kong was quite "gelat" as it was deep fried and there was not much taste. The only thing that was shiok was the crispy batter. It's quite a novelty dish but I probably won't order it again.Read More

I was meeting *Celine for dinner tonight, so since she craved for steamboat and I have been wanting to try Thai steamboat (aka Mookata), we decided to dine at Tom Yum Kungfu at Boat Quay area.It was a very casual and nondescript casual restaurant done up to resemble the ones in Thailand itself, apparently. Thai music was blasting and the wait staff were scurrying about while diners happily enjoyed their meals. We ordered the Steamboat Set (SGD$39.90) to share - the one for 2-3 persons. These are the vegetables - consisting of golden mushrooms, vermicelli (dong fen), fried beancurd skin (tau ghee) and an assortment of greens. I enjoyed the fresh vegetables but also must commend on the fried tofu skin - despite having been oversoaked in the soup for too long a period , it was still crunchy upon consumption. The meat platter consisted of pork lard cubes, beef, fishcakes, shrimps, scallops and pork. All the well marinated ingredients were charred to deliciousness state by our own hands. And this is one of their signature items - the Deep Fried Kangkong (SGD$13.00) that came with some deep fried shrimps. The vegetables were probably coated with flour, and yes they were crispy. Though, tasteless - there was where the spicy-sour dip served separately came into play. While I enjoyed this, I still prefer the usual stir-fried sambal kangkong...For full review and more photos, please feel free to visit:http://thearcticstar.blogspot.sg/2014/10/mookata-at-tom-yum-kungfu-mookata-at.htmlRead More

Located at boat quay, Tom Yum Kungfu is very accessible via public transport or even if you drive. Beside having thai steamboat, they also serve a huge varieties of thai cruisine. On top of that, the renovation here will brought you back to the 70s with all the posters and also the vintage deco. We ordered a thai steamboat (mookata) set from the menu at $38 with fish paste ($9). The fish paste was rather ordinary in my opinion. However best of all is the thai chilli that come free when you dine at this eatery. It is slightly sour but has a well balanced flavour of spiciness as well. On top of that, unlike many thai steamboat place, they are still using charcoal and also the price tagged along is also very affordable.Do give it a try if you are around the area.Read More

This is my 2nd visit and I brought along my friend to try it out here at Tom YUm Kungfu. In mind, I already know what is a must-order items in their menu.Mookata - Thai BBQ $38Our purpose is to have mookata so definite order. The portion of raw items are enough to fill 3 ladies up. They actually did a very good job in marinating those meat especially. The chicken and pork meat taste juicy and chewy.Fried Kangkong - RecommendedThey fried the kangkong in a tempura style. Crispy and crunchy. Sauce is provided for you to dip with but the originality is still better. You can find prawns and dory fish underneath the pile of fried kang kong. Very fresh ingredients.Pomelo Salad - RecommendedNice and refreshing. Boost your appetite. Very nutty taste as there are cashew nuts in it.Fried Chicken WingTender meat and juicy. Crispiness on the outside, crunching sound can be heard in your mouth.Definitely one of the place to recommend for mookata. A good variety of side dishes to choose from. You can also have normal steamboat if you want.Read More

Was here before for their thai steamboat, their standard of food is very consistent, still taste as good ( had reviewed this before). This is my first time trying their ale carte dishes. We ordered seafood tomyum soup (non-clear base). By the look of it we thought it will be very spicy. But it isn't. The seafood inside are fish, prawns, sotong, clams which taste fresh. We like this dish a lot. Fried kang kong (with some fried fish at the sides), which we heard from many reviews that it is very nice and unique dish. However we find it rather normal. Not much taste in it, it taste like tempura instead. Will not be ordering this again in future.Overall, we still love to dine in here Best thai steamboat in singaporeRead More

He's back from Cordon Bleu in Paris and was craving for some Thai Mookata which couldn't just wait till his Bangkok trip the next day.So us being the ever accomodating girl pals, we went along with him to Tom Yum Kungfu. A reservation at 8pm got us seats in 15 minutes while a group of two girls waited for just slightly longer before they got a seat. Apparently from 6-8pm, people wait for up to an hour for seats without reservations. Not that I wanted to ever try. Food made simple. You choose from set meals if you're having Mookata. Otherwise, there's a whole host of Thai dishes to choose from their ala carte menu. So this was it. Our best deal set for 3-4pax for $49. No Mama noodles, more veggies please. And we added on a side of pork and pork belly. This was some oink loving going on. And by recommendation, we got their signature fish paste on bamboo too. But this was a downer. Lacking in taste and bite, this was too expensive to take up stomach space. I'd rather much have my pigs thank you very much. The art of mookata, soup the soupy ingredients and grill those meats well, crisp the edges and leave the middle tender with the help of their generous lard cubes of course. Ingenious. And takes some skill. Or actually, discipline. I'm happy just cooking my meats. Who cares about the browned edges or grill marks... until he fed me one done just right. Mmm.And if you love chilli, their sauce packs a right punch! It left me wanting. For all that and two rounds of drinks each, it totalled to $99 for us three. Which was a satisfyingly filling dinner for a decent price. :)Read More

Me and my frenz had this craving for steamboat, so we decided to try Tom Yum Kungfu since its reviews on Openrice and Hungrygowhere are prettty good. To our disappointment, the reviews are overrated. For a 2-3 persons steamboat portion of $38, there was only a small basket of vegetables and tray of generous portion of pork, but cut into really thin slices, 1 prawn and scallop per person. We ordered an additional plate of chicken, but the chicken was hard and dry, probably because it was chicken breast. Even after ordering a mango salad and potato cakes, we were still not full. Another one packet of noodles will cost a whopping $6 more!:(The menu is also very restrictive. It does not allow for mix and match, We could not have both pork and chicken in our steamboat package. Unless we add-on, the package consists of only pork meat. From the picture, you can see that the rounded grill had occupied the majority space in the middle of the steamboat pot and there was really no space for the soup around the grill, so it had to be constantly topped up. There was also difficulty scooping up the soup, owing to the space constraint. As a result of the grill, being rounded in shape, grilled food is sometimes in danger of slipping into the soup. There is also not enough space on the grill to put a lot of meat. The whole design of the steamboat was atrocious. The service was also pretty bad, when the place was not even full house yet. Our drinks had to be repeated and followed-up many times. The place was also cramped with no additional space for leg space and bags. Though the price is cheap, but me and my friends' steamboat craving were not satisfied. If I have to spend a $10-20 more for a better steamboat , I would gladly accept the latter. Read More

I am a big fan of thai steamboat! Specially love tom yum kungfu as they have very tasty soup and it doesn't contain MSG so you will not feel thirsty after that. It is also not so oily.I love the concept of BBQ + steamboat idea. You can choose to bbq them or eat healthy and placed it into the soup. But usally i will bbq the meat and place the vegetable (not in the photo) into the soup. Have been to here a couple of times and the food here is really fresh and well marinated. My favourite will be the pork belly and scallop. Also, they have very nice chilli. Staffs were quite attentive as they will help us to top up the soup constantly. Read More

Personally i love the concept of mookata ( combination of steamboat and bbq together ). Usually the soup base used for mookata is quite nice and i just love to refill it again and again. It may be a bit shallow for the steamboat part but i have no issues with it.I do know for some friends they don't like the after effect black "chao ta" part on the top (for the bbq). But i think it's ok for once in a while kind yah =)For this first visit at Tom Yum Kungfu with 2 other friends, we went for this $40 something set which consist a bit of everything. Ingredients are quite fresh so that's good. And i super love the chili sauce! Very spicy but really shiok! Really enhance the taste of everything =) Overall it's a good experience doing bbq, steamboat and chit chat with friends. I've tried mookata in bangkok before but for singapore, it's the first time. For my friends, they totally never try it before but i'm glad they can accept it.Read More

For a complete review, visit http://rachelays.blogspot.sg/2013/06/tom-yum-kungfu.html2-3 pax set at $39. My partner and I finished up everything and only felt 80% full even though she was a small eater. This would feed 2 persons just right instead of 3 unless you and your friends have small appetites. The pork and chicken were marinated well and were very yummy. The vegetables were soaked up in the goodness of the soup broth and were very flavourful too. Overall, it's a positive experience and I can't wait to go back to try their a la carte menu. Read More

I have tried their mookata before which was not bad, and this time I came for their ala carte dishes. I have read that their kang kong is very special; true enough, it was fried till crunchy, not your conventional kang kong at all, and there's seafood beneath the kang kong with their own gravy, which was good as well. I also had their fried chicken, was tasty and not too greasy.Read More

This is my first time trying the thai steamboat + bbq. To my delight, the soup wasn't that oily at all even though the bbq was combined with the steamboat and oil from the bbq dripped into the soup. We had a platter that came with scallops, prawns, meat. The meat was well marinated, and tasted good after bbq-ing, and the other stuff were all fresh. Servers were efficient and came to replenish the soup every now and then.Read More

Do check it out the signature thai mango salad here as they are really fragrant and delicious! The mango slices are very thick in texture and also very sweet in taste as well. Goes really well with the spicy sweet sauce that goes along with it. The generous amount of peanuts topped on it are also very crunchy and with that really nice roasted flavour in it too. The combination taste really good and the price is very reasonable as well.Read More

Food is expensive and small serving, taste is above average and seating place is extremely limited and very very poor air vent , imagine eating with bbq pots inside a room! On weekend after 6pm dont bother to turn up without calling, takes 1hr queue and not in waiting order, seen a 6 person table only has 2 person occupied and the staff are just running about like monkeys, serious management problem. My first visit and it is really a great experience! We decided on this place after much research on the internet. It was my mom's birthday and we did made reservation beforehand. Luckily we did as the place was really full with people when we reached. We had steamboat bbq. The food is real fresh. Scallops, prawns, oysters, beef are all extremely fresh. There are many huge chunk of white cubes at the corner of the plate (pork's fats) which is to grease the pan before barbequing. 2 way bbq, soup or not. Read More
