Yummy pasta, but at what price!
The Marmalade Pantry
2013-09-12
I have never eaten at Marmalade Pantry before, but I had heard good things about their desserts. However, when my colleagues suggested that we go there for lunch, I was a little skeptical- I believe that good dessert places probably don't do good mains. Anyway! We were given the menu to peruse, and I felt the pinch in my wallet. Don't get me wrong, the prices weren't sky high, but I felt that $24 for pasta (which was what I paid) was a little much for a cafe setting? In any case, I settled for the scallop pasta in prawn bisque because a) it was cheaper than the other options, and b) it sounded not bad. When it came, I felt mildly comforted, mostly because it looked not bad and smelt really good. There was a strong prawn-y aroma which told me the bisque/broth was flavourful and likely to be very yummy. After my colleagues' food came, we dug in.I'm not sure if its evident from the picture, but the linguine was very good- al dente texture that wasn't soggy despite the abundant broth and also not undercooked. There was also plenty of hebi (small prawns) buried in the pasta. I realised that that was what gave it such a strong aroma, and while it was slightly unerving to eat at first- I don't like fusion foods- I got used to it and it was actually a very comforting flavour that reminded me of homecooked food. I soon found myself scooping up every bit of broth and wishing there was more heh.The meal was really yummy, and I was very happy with my pasta. However, the thought of $24 for noodles with hebi and 2 pieces of big prawn and scallops each didn't feel very satisfying. I guess this would be one of those places to go once in a while. If you want somewhere for a date or a nice place to talk with friends and feel slightly more high-class though, I thoroughly recommend Marmalade Pantry!(I didn't get to try their desserts, but the table beside us were eating and it looked really good!)…查看更多

Decent korean food at a reasonable price!
Kim Dae Mun Korean Food
2013-09-12
I had heard ALOT over the years about this little korean gem tucked away in the basement of Concorde Hotel, and I decided to try it finally heh. One weekday afternoon my colleague and I walked over for lunch and got to filling our hungry tummies. The set up of the place was not bad, its was a food court setting, but they had their own seating area and the cooking/service area was hugeeeeee. An old korean? lady took our order and we paid, then stood to a side to wait for our food. Efficient and rather fast, our food was soon ready for collection.Tada! I chose the kimchi chigae (I always do haha) set, which came with a banchan (side dish) of either pickled cucumber, kimchi, or ikan bilis. Not a fan of ikan bilis and already having kimchi in my stew, I settled for the cucumber. After taking the requisite photos, we quickly tucked in. The broth was tangy and sour and spicy all at the same time, very yummy! I sampled a piece of kimchi, firm and crunchy, it wasn't as soft as I would have liked, and certain pieces (nearer to the heart of the cabbage) was a little too sour. Close up shot of my stew ^^ My colleague commented that no matter what angle you take kimchi chigae from, it always turns out bad -.- Either way, it was not bad. Eaten with the rice, the broth, which was a little too salty on its own, was balanced out nicely. My only peeve is probably that there was REALLY little meat in the stew. But then again, the whole set was $5.50, so no complains I guess. We also shared rice stew, dokbukki, between the two of us. I had high expectations of this, as it's one of my favourite things to order at dongdaemun. However, I felt that while the rice was sufficiently chewy, the sauce tasted like chee cheong fun sauce- thick sweet sauce. I really disliked it as I was expecting something more akin to my stew, tangy and spicy, with bits of kimchi in it. Oh well :(Overall, the meal wasn't a bad one. Obviously it was not the best korean food I've had, but again, for the price, it was pretty not bad. …查看更多

Burger anyone?
Triple O's
2013-08-28
A few colleagues and I had recently discovered this new addition to the Orchard Road belt, and so decided to come here for lunch one day. Triple O is like a fast food burger place, but when we looked at the prices, they weren't very cheap- burger sets started from $9.90 and went up to $14.90. With such prices, we had rather high expectations in mind.I ordered a Chicken Supreme Combo, with had a grilled chicken burger, a drink and fries, which I upgraded to poutine- a Canadian dish of fries topped with gravy and cheese. They gave me a little disc that would vibrate when my food's done, so we went to find some seats first. Soon after, my disc vibrated and I went to collect my burger. Here's how it looks- a pretty standard fast food kind of set. The poutine didn't look as exciting as I had expected though, and neither did it taste as exciting. The fries were substandard (I like mac's crispy shoestring fries, and these were fatter and soggier) and the gravy was just the mashed potato gravy that could be dispensed from 7/11s all over Singapore. As for the cheese, there were several clumps of melted cheese but it was too little to add any flavour. The burger though, was quiteeeeee okay. Here's a close up.My colleagues were complaining that their patties (which were beef patties) weren't juicy, but mine was pretty good I feel; perhaps it was because my patty was a grilled chicken patty. The honey mustard sauce was just nice too, such that each bite was flavourful and juicy. My only qualm i guess, is that my burger didn't come with a pickle :( The pickles here are quite cool, its a long slice from a dill pickle, and its laid on top of the burger, so I was quite looking forward to it. I guess they figured that only beef burgers should have pickles though, but oh well.Overall, I think the food was okay? It's probably not worth $10 (about $12 if you count the poutine top up)though, seeing as I can get better burgers and free-flow drinks for about the same price at Carls Junior. Maybe if I get a really bad burger craving and there's nowhere else around the area heh.…查看更多

Reasonable prices, salty food.
Ootoya Japanese Restaurant
2013-08-26
I had heard good things about Ootoya, and after checking a few blogs to be sure of its quality, I decided to visit it. I went on a Thursday night and I was rather worried that it would be full, but thank goodness, it wasn't too crowded. The set up consists of a 'bar area' where customers could sit in a large square on the floor - a little open concept I guess - and a normal booth area. I was directed to the booth area, where I settled myself.Ootoya had a set menu concept, where all its items were set items which came with refillable rice and miso soup. It seemed simple enough, and I got a Katsu nabe set- basically a pork cultet with egg on top set in a light soup broth- that came with rice, miso soup and a small pickled dish. How my katsu set looked like, it was quite a large portion and smelt really good!A close up heh. The pork cutlet was really flavourful and the breadcrumbs were nicely fried, although they soon got a little soggy because of the broth/gravy, but that was fine. I think my dish was quite good actually, but what irritated me quite a bit was the saltiness of the broth. It was so salty, I had to eat every piece of meat with a lot of rice, because the meat had soaked up quite a bit of gravy. In the end, I ate almost two bowls of rice -.-The chawanmushi also came with the set, and was really small :( Other than that though, it was fine. Although it wasn't anything to rave about, it wasn't bad either, so I was fine with that.I think the food is not bad, and at a price of $21 I think it's quite reasonable. The only peeve that I had was the saltiness of the broth, but other than that, not bad. Will I come back? I might, but I definitely wouldn't get the nabe set again.…查看更多

Good and reasonably priced ramen ^^
Ramen Bar Suzuki
2013-08-23
My friend and I were on our way to Harry's at Boat Quay and decided to grab a quick dinner first. Hearing the good reviews about Suzuki, we decided to give it a try. Walking in, it seemed nice enough, there was a bar area where people eating alone could sit and slurp up a bowl of noodles, and also tables for patrons. The crowd moved relatively quickly and we could tell it was a place for office execs to grab lunch or dinner. When we sat down, a few things struck me. Firstly, there were bowls of eggs on our table, and the menus came with a sort of form with a lot of options. We were seriously lost, so we asked a waiter what to do.His instructions were to look at the menu provided and choose what ramen we wanted. Then, we could use the form to customise our ramen- how flavourful we wanted it, how springy the noodles, whether we wanted extra toppings etc. He also explained to us that the eggs were hard-boiled and free-flow for customers, together with rice and shredded cabbage, which were on a table at the side of the restaurant. We were very amused with this and rather impressed, and we immediately went to work on a few eggs heh. A plus point, the eggs were still warm! (They must change them regularly/ only put them out when there are customers)After all the admin work of ordering was done, we sat back and relaxed. A waitress placed a jug of cold tea on our table, this was rather nice of them as it was complimentary, and would come in very useful later on.My ramen, which came quite promptly, was the signature original ramen, smelled really good. I also ordered tamago, which was an extra, but to my dismay, it was too cooked :( While the texture and that sweet flavour was still there, the yolk didn't ooze when I bit into it. On the other hand, the ramen noodles were just the way I liked them, springy and al dente. The soup was really flavourful as well, I really liked it, but after a few slurps, I realised that perhaps I shouldn't have opted for the extra-flavourful option; it was too salty :/ I ended up having to drink quite a few cups of tea to combat the saltiness.MY friend ordered the squid ink ramen, and it smelled really good when it arrived ^^ I tasted some of her soup, and it was good- there was a slight seafood flavour and a saltiness, but because she had not opted for the extra-flavourful option, it didn't become too salty. From the way she was gobbling up her ramen, I could tell it was delicious!Suziki ramen bar has ticked all the mandatory boxes, good flavourful ramen, nice japanese bar-ish ambience/setup, and good service. They even tried to differentiate themselves with the free eggs, which adds points to them. However, I do feel that perhaps their ramen might be a little too salty. But oh well, other than that, it was great, and I still would come back again!…查看更多

Great Japanese food, even greater service!
IKYU
2013-08-23
I had wandered into IKYU without any knowledge about it, but it had looked rather nice, and my friend and I were both hungry. Since they were offering a set lunch at around $25, so figured, why not!The decor of the place is really nice, classy and elegant with a little industrial feel- plenty of dark wood and metal, with slightly darker (and more romantic?) lighting. The bar area, where patrons could sit, and where two sushi chefs- one Japanese and one Malaysian- were preparing sushi and entertaining everyone with their banter and stories. It was a very friendly and chill sort of vibe.So after some consideration, we decided on what we wanted! We also ordered drinks, I got a yuzu iced tea (which was very normal and therefore not deserving of a photo) and he got a cocktail with milk and japanese strawberry liquer.Tadaaaaa! It doesn't look like much, but it was actually really good! The alcohol taste was really subtle, and even though I don't like milk, I would have gladly drunk the whole glass!Anyway, our appetities came soon after. He stuck with the safe option- potato salad- while I went for the salmon spring roll. His potato salad was nothing amazing I felt, but he was happily gobbling it down, so I guess if you love potato you'd like it haha. I really like my spring roll though, the skin felt like the rice paper used for wrapping vietnamese spring rolls, but crispier, giving it a crunch, and the proportion of rice and salmon and roe was just nice, allowing me to taste and savour the buttery texture of the salmon ^^ The bonito flakes sprinkled on top were a nice touch too! Then came our mains! I was super excited because I had got the chirashi don, which i love- sashimi slices on rice, what not to love!- and he got the seven sisters sushi (basically 7 pieces of sushi lol) Here's his sushi! I couldn't take a nice picture because it was too long, but presentation was actually very nice! Moreover, the server was super nice too, he took the time to explain each sushi so that we could fully appreciate it. I tasted the tuna sushi, which had very nice, fat, sticky rice with a thick slice of tuna on top. While not the best tuna I've had, it was not bad.And then my set arrived! I was super happy when I saw it ^^ While the sashimi was chopped up instead of in slices, it was more than compensated by the huge amount of fish. The chirashi was really yummy, with each sashimi having different textures (the salmon was the best I feel, buttery and fat, it was smooth and slid down my throat) and mixed with the lightly seasoned rice :) There was also this sweet pickled gourd in it? I'm not sure what it's called, or if it even is what I think it is, but it went really well with the fish because its sweetness brought out the sweetness of the fish as well!Close-up of my yummy yummy lunch! All in all, it was a great lunch with good food at fair prices. But what was really worth mention is actually the attentive and personalised service at IKYU. I have rarely had such great service, with prompt removal of dishes and topping up of water, and smiles all round. It was very impressive and made my lunch so much better! 5/5 stars!…查看更多

Good coffee ^^
PS.Cafe Petit
2013-08-17
I went on a food exploration trail a few weeks ago around Tiong Bahru after hearing that there had been an explosion of cafes and good food/coffee around that area. First on my trail was PS Cafe Petit; I had never been to PS Cafe before and so was looking forward to the experience. The interior was very very nice, very classy and plush, like a gentleman's club in New York or something. They had a really nice bar area, a huge selection of wine and even magazines to browse- they had the New Yorker! After we went in, the barista/bartender explained to us that it was more of a takeaway place, which explained the small size of the cafe, but that if we could eat in the cafe if we were willing to eat from takeaway plates, so we started our food journey with a latte and a meatball and mozzarella calzone. It might not look amazing in this picture, but it was actually not bad- the crust was thicker and more pastry-like than other calzones that I've tried, but it was steaming hot when we broke into it, and the meatball and mozzarella were perfect complements for each other. However, as we continued eating, it started to become reallyyyyy jelat, because of the cream and cheese. Here's a close up.It was then that we discovered the highlight of the dish- the chilli that they gave at the side. It looked like sambal, but it wasn't really spicy, instead, it tasted sweet with a tinge of tangy-ness and spiciness- from what we could tell, it was chilli fried with garlic, so it was really fragrant and crunchy and really really good when eaten together with the calzone, lightening the heavy cream and cheese. We also ordered a latte that was really good. It was smooth and creamy, but light, and the coffee wasn't sour or acidic at all, which I loved. Moreover, the barista was really really nice, chatting with us and making sure that we were comfortable, even asking for feedback about his coffee and about the food.We went on to look about the rest of the Yong Siak area, but I really enjoyed PS Cafe Petit. While I might not come back for the food- it really was a bit too creamy for me- I would definitely come back for a cuppa.…查看更多

Tamagooooooo ~
Ramen Santouka
2013-08-17
I had great ramen at The Central's Santouka, so when I found that there was another outlet at Cuppage, I couldn't wait to try it. Just my luck, a couple of friends and I were around Somerset and looking for a lunch spot, so off to Santouka we went!Whenever I go to ramen places, I always get their signature; I feel that from their signature/ original ramen dishes, you can more or less gauge the standard of the ramen. Thus at Santouka, I got the Shio ramen- the salt based ramen. And as always, I got a serving of the tamago ^^I was really hungry so I couldn't wait for my ramen to arrive, and when it did it smelled sooooo good I almost forgot to take a picture of it first. Anyways, I was super excited and quickly dug in after taking the mandatory shot. At first slurp though, I was disappointed. The noodles were too soggy for my liking, and they were thicker than I remember (or expected). I like my ramen a little like mee kia, thin and springy, so that was a disappointment as it felt like instant noodles to me :/ The soup was slightly better, the chicken broth was tasty and flavourful, albeit a little salty, but it didn't make up for the ramen :(I think what saved the day though, was the tamago- the egg that comes with ramen. I don't know how exactly it's made, nor how to make it, but I die for a perfect tamago; soft and creamy egg white and an almost liquid gold egg yolk that spills out when you bite into it. And boy oh boy, Santouka does a GREAT tamago.Their tamago is the perfect tamago; heaven in a bite. It's slight sweetness complements the salty soup so well, and Santouka gave a whole egg, unlike certain other ramen places (coughippudocough) so that I could enjoy my eggy goodness more. While their ramen isn't as great as I remember, Santouka's tamago is perfect and I sincerely think that I might go back, just for the tamago heheh^^…查看更多

Homemade &made?
&Made / L'Entrecote Express
2013-08-17
I've heard from somewhere that &made was named so as to sound like the word 'homemade' in a french accent, after it's French creator. Well, being a restaurant of celebrity chef Bruno Mernard, I wanted to see if it was really all that great, so when my friend wanted to meet up for lunch around the area, I volunteered &made. The decor of the place is a mix of modern and quirky, with colour tones of red, black and white. We were seated at the far end of the restaurant, so getting the attention of the servers' was alittle hard, even though there wasn't much of a crowd, but when we did get their attention they were attentive and enthusiastic to serve us. My friend, being the salmon fanatic that she is, got the Honey Salmon burger, which was basically seared salmon with a honey mustard, dill and tatar sauce, while me, being a nuisance, decided to create my own burger. I chose a beef patty and paired it with shitake mushrooms and a fried egg, as I had had great breakfast burgers before with beautiful sunny-side-ups and I had hoped to recreate that experience. All the burgers on the menu came with a side of fries, which meant that my friend got to have fries while I didn't, but that was fine. Our burgers arrived relatively quickly, and they definitely looked good. The Honey Salmon burger, which looked great and according to my friend, yummy! (although she does like anything salmon so we don't know how accurate her judgement is.) She also kept munching on the fries, and she's rather picky about carbs, so it must mean that they were good- thick and well fried, but soft and still potato-y when you bite into it.As for my burger, well... I'm undecided. First things first, my egg was NOT a sunny-side-up. This might have been a misunderstanding on my part, as fried eggs (as I belatedly realised) are not necessarily sunny-side-ups. However, I had expected one so I was rather disappointed. The mushrooms were done well though, with the earthy taste coming through nicely, and the beef patty was fine- but not amazing. It was seasoned well and it wasn't too well done too, but I felt it wasn't very juicy, neither was it super flavourful. All in all, while the presentation was good and the burgers weren't bad, they weren't amazing either? My burger was $17, which I felt was okay for the reputation and ambience, but again, I probably will not be coming back :/…查看更多

A satisfying light lunch!
Kilo
2013-08-17
Having wandered Orchard Central many times, I had come across this little concept store tucked away in a corner and was intrigued. It sold clothes and other 'designer/tumblr-ish' items, but had a food area as well, so I decided to give it a try one lunch break. The setup was simple but classy, with wooden blocks for chairs and a bar area for people eating alone. It was quite busy with the lunch crowd- mostly corporates with a few angmohs - but my friend and I were seated rather quickly. The menu was a simple one, with rice dishes (like japanese dons), sushi rolls and ciabatta sandwiches. There was also a lunchs set going on, a drink and a sandwich/rice bowl for $15, and we went for that- I took the salmon and avocado ciabatta, while my friend took the wagyu beef rice bowl.My sandwich arrived...slightly late I felt, but it's prettiness in presentation made up for it. Very smart of them to cut with the cross section showing, I love veggies so it looked REALLY good. When I bit into it, the ciabatta crust was crisp and lightly toasted but not hard, and the filling of salmon (which was rather generous i felt) complemented the creamy avocado, while the rocket, onion and cucumber added a crunch and sweetness. There was also a sort of tangy dressing which I couldn't place but really enjoyed. My friend's beef rice came soon after; compared to mine, his seemed much less. Either way, he seemed to enjoy his meal, and complimented the beef slices as juicy and done just nice- the edges were seared well, but the middle was still slightly pink, making it not overdone and thus chewy. Overall, it was a nice lunch, but it certainly was not the most filling lunch nor the most value-for-money one that I've had. It's great for the ambience and cool chill vibe, but I don't think I'd be returning soon.…查看更多

yum yum to my tum!
Mei Heong Yuen Dessert
2013-07-31
I was wandering around Chinatown after dinner looking for some sweet and cold dessert to take away the hot and sticky Singapore night and I found this gem of a place! It was around 9pm on a Saturday night and the place was SUPER crowded, with tables spilling out onto the road and people loitering around waiting for seats to free up. After a little pro aunty skills, I managed to secure two seats for my friend and I and we looked at the menu with high expectations.Mei Heong Yuen offers both traditional Chinese desserts like Almond Paste, Fu Zhok (Barley with Beancurd Skin), and Mango Pomelo Sago, and also more modern and youngster-friendly desserts like flavoured Shaved Ice. Both are equally popular, as both families and older people, as well as youngsters looking for supper troop over for dessert. I got the Watermelon and Lychee Shaved Ice, while my friend got the Fu Zhok (cold), so that we had a chance to sample the old and the new. The Fu Zhok was creamy and sweet with barley and pieces of beancurd skin. However, I felt that it was a little too sweet, and that my mom makes a better version ^^ The Watermelon and Lychee Shaved Ice, on the other hand, hit all the right spots. I'm a sucker for fro-yo, and I personally think that the texture of shaved ice is actually very similar to that of frozen yoghurt. The watermelon and lychee complemented each other very well as both are light flavours, and it wasn't too sweet nor artificial, a major plus point. Moreover, it was COLD! Perfect for quenching thirst and cooling the body down. While the prices of the desserts are a little steep- my shaved ice cost $6 :(((- Mei Heong Yuen Dessert is not a bad place to have supper/dessert with friends and family and enjoy the ambiance of a typical small, crowded eatery with bustling aunties serving desserts. …查看更多

His.tori
2013-07-30
KOREAN BBQ! I recently went to Tanjong Pagar for a korean bbq fix; I was hoping that 2 Day 1 Night would miraculously be empty at 6pm on a Saturday night, silly me. In the end, my friend and I ended up at His.tori, another Korean BBQ place just a few doors down. I am traditionally suspicious of new things, and His.tori was no exception. Having only been to 2 Day 1 Night, I was worried that this new place would disappoint me. Moreover, the service staff that greeted me was, horror of horrors, not Korean! LOL anyway after we settled down, I went to check out the buffet spread. The spread was similar in layout and content to that of other Korean BBQ restaurants, and was overall quite acceptable and tasty. However, I felt that the pork belly at His.tori wasn't as good as other places ie. 2 Day 1 Night, as it was still very frozen even as it was on display, and the frozen food taste was quite strong. Also, they don't have the cold barley drink that I really like; I find that it helps to cleanse my palate after all the meat. While there were minor disappointments, on the whole the meal was quite satisfactory indeed, and it is slightly cheaper as well I think, at $24 per person for dinner. I left smelling slightly of BBQ, stuffed to the brim, and rather happy.…查看更多

Always a silver lining :)
La Pizzaiola @ Jalan Riang
2013-07-30
My friends and I had actually wanted to go to neighbouring Fat Cat and then Wimbly Lu for dinner and dessert, but when we reached Jalan Riang, lo and behold, both were closed -.- The only place open was La Pizzaiola, and while I was hesitant about going in, there didn't seem to be any choice.La Pizzaiola is a italian restaurant (no surprise there) doing traditional pizza and pasta dishes with antipasti and a few mains. When we walked in, the place was abuzz with people and caucasians, which put me a little more at ease. They seemed to enjoy the food and looked comfortable, so we settled in and looked at the menu. As far as italian food went, this restaurant didn't stray too far from the path, with the usual proscuitto al fungi pizza and risotto with porcini mushrooms. My eye picked up on a slightly more unusual pasta though, squid-ink potato dumplings in crab meat sauce, and in the end we decided to go with that and a calzone to share. The pasta came first and we peered hesitantly at it. It looked slightly dubious, but it tasted good, thank goodness. The potato dumplings weren't too hard or 'jelat', it felt a little like tang yuan? And the crab meat sauce it was in was tasty, not too salty, and the tangy-ness of the tomato was present as well. The calzone came soon after and did not disappoint as well. I was worried the inside would dry out (which happens if its not done well/properly) but when we cut into it, the gravy sipped out pipping hot. ^^ It was filled with ham, mushrooms and olives, and the pizza skin was thin enough that there was enough filling for skin and enough skin for filling. The service was also good, with friendly and helpful service staff. One of our servers was slightly pushy toward certain items on the menu, but it's probably what he was more familiar with, and it didn't negatively influence our experience at La Pizzaiola. On the whole, it was sad that we didn't manage to go to Fat Cat/Wimbly Lu, but I guess there is always a silver lining. …查看更多

Soup, salad and panini!
The Rotisserie - Chicken & Gourmet Salads
2013-07-30
I went for a dinner recently at The Rotisserie, which was located at Rochester Mall. After reaching Rochester Mall, I soon realised that food there was pricey and that there were few restaurants to choose from. As a result, The Rotisserie- reasonably priced food- became the venue for dinner. From what I hear from my friends, the pork knuckle there is really good, but I wasn't really in the mood for salted meat, so after pouring over the menu I opted for a 'safer' option- soup, salad and panini. While it may sound bland, boring and blah, it was actually really tasty and filling. It basically consists of a Soup-of-the-day (it happened to be chicken and vegetable on my day), a choice of salad from the salad bar, and a choice of panini from their selection of filling. Long story short, I chose the Chicken ranch salad and the Italian panini. The Rotisserie works in a self-service manner, (you're given a buzzer after you pay at the cashier which will alert you to when your food is ready for collection) but I was quite glad that they didn't take too long to prepare the food. I've heard that for the pork knuckle, only a few are available at any given time, so if they run out you'd have to wait for a half-hour before you'd get your food. Anyways, my food was served rather promptly. So, first things first. My soup was really tasty, and I liked that there was a chicken bone/thigh and chopped vegetables in it- it made me feel that it was home cooked (although there was also a rather strong MSG taste). Next, I chose the Chicken Ranch salad, which was an adequate portion. While it wasn't very generous, the lettuce was crisp and there were quite a few slices of chicken so I've not qualms about it. My only peeve is the amount of dressing they used; whatever notion of healthiness I had when I ordered a salad vanished with the thick dressing. Lastly, the panini. The bread used seemed to be the normal gardenia bread, but because it was grilled panini-style it wasn't bad, and the filling wasn't sparse. The Italian panini came with ham and salami, dressed with basil pesto. Together, the soup, salad and panini made quite a filling meal that left me not bursting, but content. Moreover, the setup at Rochester Mall was quite chill and laid-up, making it a nice place to meet your friends for a meal and a catch-up session (if Buona Vista happens to be convenient).…查看更多

Bull & Butcher
2013-07-29
I had passed by Bull and Butcher a while back and it looked good, so I decided to go there for dinner a few days ago. Together with my friend, we got a set menu for dinner- consisting of a appetizer, main and dessert- and a mixed grill with a separate appetizer of oysters and a side of sauteed forest mushrooms. First to come was the salmon salad- the appetizer from the set menu. It was a generous portion, there were thick slabs of smoked salmon with rocket and capers and a drizzled cream cheese dressing. The cream cheese went extremely well with the salmon and the capers took the edge of the bitter rocket. The half a dozen oysters came next. They were fresh and juicy; although they were cleaned, you could still taste the sea, which in my opinion, added to the flavour. My Australian Wagyu beef fettuccine came next (it was the main I chose). I enjoyed the tomato base and the al dente texture of the pasta, but it was nothing to write home about and I felt there wasn't enough beef. The Mixed Grill also arrived at the same time, but I was so busy with my pasta I forgot to take a photo of the Mixed Grill :( That is a true pity because both my friend and I really liked it. There was a selection of steak, sausage, and lamb. The steak was done medium rare and so so juicy! Eating it I could tell that steak was Bull and Butcher's forte. The lamb was decent, but again nothing amazing, but I really liked the sausage. It was stuffed with herbs and this offset the otherwise 'jelat-ness' of the meaty sausage. We also ordered a side of sauteed forest mushrooms. While simple, the mushrooms were tasty and flavourful, accompanying the meat and pasta well.We were really stuffed by the time it came to dessert, but I couldn't help myself when it arrived. The cheesecake was very light and not at all creamy, and the fruits went very well, making it a delightful end to the evening. All in all, I really like Bull and Butcher, both because of the great food and the lovely ambiance. A great place to go for a date, or just a quiet dinner with someone special. …查看更多
