German Cuisine Smile May 23, 2013

In celebration of my colleague's birthday, we have reserved the indoor seating for 4 pax. Greeted with a warm welcome by the staff as we walked up to Brotzeit. Reservation was make easy with their professionalism given a choice of outdoor/indoor seating. They have also make two calls (a one day before and few hours) before the reservation to confirmed our attendance. Service was prompt and above average.

Aranciata, S$4.50. Sparkling Orange drink poured from a can.

Apfelschorle (Sparkling Apple Juice), S$8.50. Imported from Germany, a refreshing cup of apple juice mixed with sparkling mineral water.

Hurray! Here's the feast for tonight! Tuck in!

Camembert (Breaded Camembert with Cranberry Sauce), S$12.50. Fried to golden perfection with cheese filled up, the cranberry yogurt like sauce makes a perfect pairing.

Wurstelplatte (Sausage Platter for 2)
, S$32.50. Comes with assorted flavours of authentic sausages: spicy chicken sausages, Nurnberger sausages, pork cheese sausages, Weisswurst and garlic pork sausage and my favourite sauerkraut. Dab the sausages with some mustard sauce and some sauerkraut and it goes perfectly.

Schweinshaxn (Pork Knuckle), S$36.00 are one of the top selling item from a german cuisine menu. This cripsy hind shank of grain fed pork were thick at the exterior especially on its skin is served with potato salad, sauerkraut and the delicious homemade sauce.

Spargel mit Lungenbraten (White Asparagus with Grilled Beef Tenderloin), S$46.50. This is only available with a limit period (promotional item) base on the white asparagus feast.

Kaspressknodelsuppe (onion soup), S$9.50. Quite translucent bowl of bland tasting onion soup, however the one that steal the show is its yammy cheesy dumping that had dived underneath the bowl of cut onion stripes.

Kaiserschmarren (Emperor's Cake), S$12.50. A great choice for after meal desserts! Shredded fluffy pancakes with rum and raisins paired with plum sauce.

Apfelstrudel (Apple Strudel), S$12.50 is served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Even though our stomachs have been filled with the scrumptious meal earlier on, we could not resists these alluring sweet treats coming our way. This non sweet version of strudel tastes great.. The icing sugar drizzled over it is sweet but not cloying.

The total damage for the night from 4 dinners.

Recommendation / Tips
It would be a great dinning experience to enjoy the German draft beers at their outdoor seating.

Yes, you read it right - it's Fruit Juice Mee Siam, NOT Fruit Juice AND Mee Siam.

I was invited to this food-tasting session, with many thanks to OpenRice, without which I wouldn't have had the chance to discover the existence of such a creative re-invention of this local delight.

It seems like they have named their stall (Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa) after their own humble beginnings which started in 1956.

This is the star of the day - Fruit Juice Mee Siam with Crayfish, $6
(Mine kindly sponsored by OpenRice)

There are also $3 and $4 options but these are without crayfish. I'd say these are still good options considering that, as you can see, they also serve several slices of chicken, a few prawns, one whole egg and a handful of bean sprouts in the dish, so you'll never run out of ingredients with every bite of the noodles. Otherwise, why not top up just an additional $2 - $3 for an extra whole crayfish?! This deal is too good to be missed; I'm not sure you can get a whole crayfish elsewhere for this price.

The creative element in this dish is none other than the use of fruit juice. The few of us at the table speculated that the secret fruit juice ingredient could be pineapple. But whatever the secret ingredient was, the owner obviously succeeded in re-creating this new mee siam recipe. The soup is light, very smooth and has almost no traces of oil. It also has this slight natural sweetness, and yes, sour at the same time, tastes authentic just like mee siam, in fact everything like what a good mee siam should be. I suppose this should be the healthiest recipe to an awesome bowl of mee siam, topped with a generous amount of ingredients.

This mee siam really won hands down as compared to other mee siams I've eaten at various coffeeshops, hawker centres or cafes, which usually charge at least $3+ for a bowl of oily mee siam with only a few tiny bits of tau pok and an egg.

So many goodness in this meal, so what are you waiting for?

Although my meal was sponsored this time round, I'll be sure to return to this stall as a willing paying customer.

The Best Handmade Noodle. Smile Mar 04, 2013

$5 Ban Mian.

$5 Ban Mian.

This is where i get my fix for a comforting bowl of handmade noodle. The tip is to go early to avoid long waiting time. I usually go before 11 am. The expected waiting time then is about 20 minutes or less. Their consistent efforts in serving one of the better handmade noodle is definitely commendable. I enjoy the tasty broth served with nicely handmade noodle together with fresh tasting ingredients like prawns, minced meat, vegetable and dried ikan belis. The superb spicy chilli complemented the noodle nicely particularly the dry version. If you love their chilli, it is available at $3 per container.
The Stall.

The food is good, their service is friendly and that is probably the main factor to get their customers to keep coming back.

- The Shop
The 60-seater outlet offer an exciting variety of the best homemade delicious Asian soups with everything made fresh from the kitchen with No MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) added!!

- The Food
Sumo Nabe Hotpot @ $15.80

The variation of Sumo Nabe hotpot comprises slices of chicken, cabbage, lotus root, fried tofu and carrots. The soy milk broth is light yet thoroughly satisfying. The sweet beany taste enhance the savoury aspect of the broth. It's unique and interesting. I wasn't quite sure if I like it initially, but I quite enjoy the soup thereafter.

Three-Cup Chicken Hotpot @ $13.80

The thick homemade three-cup sauce has a divine aroma of sesame oil, rice wine and soy sauce. It was deftly flavored and braised succulent. Combined with basil and dried chilli is simply pungent!

Paper-Wrapped Herbal Chicken @ $16.80 (Half Chicken)

The delicate aroma and flavourful blend of herbs is a crowd pleaser. Not overly concoctions yet intensely good. The chicken was tender and succulent. Enjoy every bite with the inviting aroma as you tuck in. The dish is completed with a bowl of white rice.

Szechuan Style French Beans @ $6.90

The wrinkled and tooth tender french beans accompanying crumbled savory bits was drenched in flavor.

Braised Tofu in Sambal Chilli Sauce @ $7.50

This is comfort food at its best. The sambal chilli sauce was addicting, a tad spicy and sweet. The garlic bites also add an extra flavor punch.

- My Opinion
Being a soup lover, I likes most of the soups at Soup Broth Asia. They are very heartwarming and tastes of home.

There are plenty of options of soup to suit your taste. They are healthy (no MSG), flavourful (slow boil for at least 8hrs!) and low in calories. Anything better, you will have to cook yourself!

I love to do food reviews! smile

Conveniently located near Bugis, you can see this dessert shop fully occupied with patrons in the evening till the closing (11pm). So in order to avoid the crowd, I went over for dessert right after lunch in the afternoon.

My friend, Nicholas and I want some durian so the dessert we ordered are all durian desserts. So if you HATE durian.. I'm sorry this food review is definitely not for you!

Here's their menu!
Durian Sago

Durian Sago

Durian with Pomelo Sago (Cold)
$6.50

First we ordered Durian with Pomelo Sago (Cold).
I thought it was supposed to be watery, but I have no idea why it ended up to become something like durian puree. So I was kind of disappointed! I think I'll try out Ah Chew's durian dessert the next time round.

And I really have to say this, the puree taste like those durian placed for a very long time. It gives out those gas-y taste and I dislike it L

The ball in the middle is made of real durian.
It was normal durian only, not as good as the one I tried few months ago. I still remember the last time I had this, it was much better.
Durian rice roll

Durian rice roll

Durian rice roll
$5.80

This was slightly better. However, it was retrieved from the fridge, so the rice roll skin was a tad hard. So you probably want to leave it warm up to the room temperature for a while before putting it into your mouth.

The rice roll is generously filled with real durian puree. I thought the skin was a little thick though, but it could be because like I said, the skin was frozen in the refrigerator. Nonetheless, it was pretty good!

To sum up:

For dessert like this to cost more than $5, nope I don't say it's very worth it. The other dessert shop few shops down the same street named Ah Chew's is probably slightly cheaper. But if you want something new and modern, you probably want to come here. Then again, I won't say the food is worth the price because it's quite expensive. Share a few dishes with a group of friends will be more economically smart!
