Wanton Noodle. OK Jun 01, 2013

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hawker Centre | Roasted Meat | Noodles

This stall has recently featured in a food programme that aired just about a week or so ago. I kinda expected the queue to be long but never did i expect it to be so extremely long. I was there at about 11.55 am and started to queue then. I counted. It has got about 20+ customers queuing in front so i kinda estimated the queuing time to be about 30 minutes. I waited. I was still in the queue 30 minutes later. I waited. There were still 5 customers right in front of me at about 15 minutes later. I only managed to order at about 1 pm. Some customers came to take away many packets of rice and noodle. I guess that would be the main reason of such a long waiting time though the queue might not seemed to be as long.

I was told that roasted meat have already sold out.
Wanton Noodle at $3.

Wanton Noodle at $3.

So, i decided to go with the wanton noodle for $3. The well-marinated char siew nicely roasted to give it the beautifully carmalised dark red color with a slightly charred surface. It has got a good mixture of the fat and the lean part of meat to give it the desirable tenderness with the just right balance of sweet and salty taste.

The noodle has got a noticeable springiness and it tasted nice after mixed in the chilli.
Plump-looking wanton.

Plump-looking wanton.

A bowl of soup with 2 pieces of wanton came along with the noodle. The wantons were of a slightly bigger than average size. It has got a good amount of minced meat and prawn filling. I could actually see and taste the prawn in it. It tasted wonderfully fresh. The soup tasted light with a slightly peppery taste.
The Stall.

The Stall.

When i went back to take the picture of the stall at 1.15 pm, the stall was about to close. They left their last few plates of noodles and gone is the long queue too. They were already sold out before their usual closing time at 2 pm.

So, is it worth the queue? i seriously doubt so. The taste of their wanton noodle is good but not exceptionally outstanding. I am rather certain i would not queue another hour just to taste it again.

I would be delightful to eat it again only if the queue is short with reasonable amount of waiting time.

A lot of Filipinos here in Singapore got so exited when they
knew that Jollibee is opening in Singapore. Of course count me in together with
my house buddies who try to find their way to free their one friday night schedule
just to see and taste by ourselves our all time childhood favorite fast food chain.

I choose to order the chicken spaghetti meal and happy to say their chicken joy
crisp and tenderness is so real as the one in Philippines! I also enjoy the spaghetti which really satisfy my cravings for the sweet and spicy Filipino style of spaghetti. The gravy reminds me also of home and makes me homesick because fastfood outlets here do not consider gravy as a staple condiment for chicken. #Jollibee smile

My friend introduced me to this yong tau foo place at Lucky Plaza, and oh my, I never looked back at other yong tau foo anymore. My Favourite Café is hidden at the top floor of Lucky Plaza next to Jollibee, and enjoys quite a fair share of patrons especially during lunch hours. You will need to queue for about 10 minutes before you get a space, but it sure is worth a wait.

Look at how everyone is digging in like mad. Yummy yummy lol

Huge selection of things to put in your bowl: you can choose 5 items and one noodle type for only $3.50! I love the mushrooms - so huge and juicy and I can't get enough of it! I wanted to just grab like 3 mushrooms but that would be a little obsessive and a lack of variety. So.. I shall do that the next time ;D

After you finish choosing what you want, there are five noodle types that you can choose: mee, mee kia, mee pok, etc. Usually I just buy the mee pok smile

It's super nice. Trust me. When I'm looking at this picture, I can taste the godliness of this bowl of yong tau foo. Especially the juicy mushrooms and the meatballs. The more I look at this picture... the more I'm making plans to go grab this next week again.

There's the sauces provided but I don't really like/need them, so I just left it alone after trying a bit of each. The soup itself is flavourful enough, so I think there's no need for the extra sauces. smile

It might get a little squeezy because you have to share tables with strangers, but anyway you'll be busy stuffing yourself with the food to be uncomfortable with that!

Tip: Go in pairs to get a seat faster.

Sembawang White Bee Hoon Smile May 09, 2013

Categories : Coffeeshop | Zi Char | Noodles

I had a chance to patron the famous white bee hoon which located along Japan Tempang, Sembawang. You Huak Restaurant , occupying a corner shophouse unit which is just opposite the Sembawang Shopping Centre. The location wasn’t that convenient though as you need to take a bus from Sembawang MRT station to get there.

Photo of people queuing for dinner.

The restaurant is an open-air eatery which was light up with very bright cool white fluorescent lamps on evening onwards. They served range of zhi char dishes which was all listed on their menu. All the available dishes are shown on the laminated menu so that customers can just order directly from the categorized dishes.

The signature dish, Seafood White Bee Hoon @ S$12.00 (L) served in generous portion. The wok hei was there and the moist of the bee hoon stir-fried with the seafoods (prawns, squids, eggs and vegetables) tasted similar to Hokkien mee.But the bee hoon taste lighter than Hokkien mee. It tasted delicious while it is hot. The dish is quite addictive too as we can’t stop having it for several rounds.

Indo-styled Fried Chicken Wing @$16.00 (L)- Taste is ok only although it is cooked with stripped gingers to add up the taste. No much to rave about it but it would taste better when it is pipping hot as you can taste the crispiness of the skin.

Sambal Kang Kong @$12.00 (L) does not taste spicy as it looks. It taste as same standard as other zi char stalls as well.

Omelette with prawns @S$9.00 (L) . It taste same as normal zi char stall.

Calamari / Fried Sotong @S$10.00 (S) tasted crispy as it looks. You need to have it while it is hot and dipped them with the ready served mayonnaise. It can be addictive once you start having it while it is still crispy.

If you wish to give it a try, you may want to avoid peak hours especially weekends and also night time. Although the signature bee hoon was highly recommended, I will not queue for more than 15 minutes for it.

The owner takes pride in cooking the gravy from scratch, insisting on using only the freshest ingredients he obtains from the wet market daily.

What sets this Mee Siam apart from others is the secret blend, of several fruit juices that yields a light and refreshing taste. The commixture of fruit juices imparts a familiar tangy flavour that we associate Mee Siam with, but without the heaviness, oiliness and cloyingness of the accustomed version. There’s also a subtle sweetness coming through the tangy notes, which I suspect comes pineapple juice. I couldn’t discern the other ingredients he’d added, but the grittiness commonly encountered in Mee Siam (from the addition of shrimp paste) is not present.

Hawker foods are generally high in calories. A regular serving of Mee Siam consists of an average of 700 calories. For those who seek a healthier alternative, this Fruit Juice Mee Siam is more forgiving on the waistline –same amount of satisfaction, but lesser the guilt. I actually enjoyed this version more than the conventional version of Mee Siam.

A bowl of Fruit Juice Mee Siam costs $3 to $4. For a slightly more lavish option, you can order the $6 portion that comes with poached crayfish. The succulent flesh comes off the shell easily –evidence of its freshness.
