Nice Fish n Chips Smile Jul 24, 2013

Categories : Bakery | Café

We visited Olio Cafe for a quick lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the food variety and quality. The husband ordered their Golden Fish n Chips ($16.50++) and found it to be quite tasty. The fish was tender and moist while the batter had just the right amount of fluff. However, for that price, the portion seemed a little too stingy.

Service wise, the waitresses were quite attentive and polite. We will definitely visit again to try out the other mains which look all-so-mouth-watering from the menu!

After our far from satisfying breakfast at Subway, we headed over to CBTL located just a few steps away.
We've always loved their Raspberry Chocolate Cake ($5.80) as the cheese is exceptionally smooth and creamy, yet not overpowering. The zesty layer of raspberry cream cheese was simply divine! And to top it off, the white chocolate flakes sprinkled with cinnamon powder was heavenly.

And to complement the cake, we had their Anniversary Blend Tea Latte ($5.80) which was an amalgamation of exotic and surreal flavours comprising of 4 teas: white, green, oolong and black infused with acia berry flavoring.

Simple light lunch Smile Jul 20, 2013

Yet another visit to Bakerzin, albeit a different outlet this time round. As the husband and I had a pretty heavy breakfast, we decided to have a light lunch this time round and ordered a salad and some small bites.

Waldorf Salad (11.50++)
Consisting of Fuji apples, cherry tomatoes, celery, dried cranberries and walnuts tossed in plain yoghurt, this healthy appetizer is not only wholesome but yummy as well! The crunchy apple chunks were a delight to munch on. Truly a guilt-free dish to satisfy our mid day craving!

Baked Sausages ($11.50++)
The Bartwurst sausages were chewy and paired well with the sauteed potatoes and mushrooms. However, I found this dish to be too oily and salty for my liking although it was still pretty tasty.

Warm Chocolate Cake ($11.50++)
And to top it off, we had the molten chocolate cake as with our previous visit. Pretty similar standard (for details, pls refer to our post "A flair for fillet...") between outlets I must say. Still as yummy!

We were shopping around Lot 1 for some gifts and when we are finally done, we headed over to Wan Chai for some cheap and good Hong Kong cuisine to satisfy our rumbling tummies.

Shrimp Dumpling Noodle ($5.90++)
I've always preferred the Hong Kong version of preparing Shrimp Dumpling Noodles to the Malaysian ones, reason being it tastes more original (without all the sweet sauce submerging the noodles and you could truly enjoy the natural flavours of the ingredients) . We found the noodles to be quite springy and chewy. The dumplings, however, were the true star of this simple dish - big, juicy and solid! Oh, and did I mention that their chili sauce is a definite must-try?

Ginko Nut with Barley ($2.30++)
The dessert, however, paled in comparison to the staple. It was quite sweet and pretty average. Perhaps the various pastes might be a better choice?

Overall, it was still a good, simple and authentic HK fare that is value for money!

Good and Affordable Steak! Smile Jul 20, 2013

Categories : American | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills

We visited Steakout to redeem our deal vouchers (choice of 1 main and 1 drink @ $14.90) bought recently and ordered two sets of steaks. As they had ran out of Sirloin Steak that evening, the waitress offered to replace our orders to an Angus Ribeye instead (but at a smaller cut of course tongue).

The steak was grilled in its natural juices and the charred smoky taste complemented the beef. The quality was good considering the price and the portion was pretty decent as well. The sides were the standard stuff - fries, garden vegs, mashed potatos, apple salad etc.

As drinks was included in our purchase as well, we ordered the Earl-grey Lavender Mar-Tea-ni (Earl-grey infused gin with Lavender notes) and Yuzu Dream (Yuzu Juice with Gin). Overall, I found the drinks to quite mediocre and one could just give it a miss. The Earl-grey did not remotely taste anything like earl-grey and the hint of lavender fragrance was plainly absent. The Yuzu dream was slightly more flavourful. However I found it too sweet and overpowering for my liking.

Service was generally pleasant and the place was pretty empty despite being a Friday night. The original pricing of their menu, to our surprise, was actually around the same range as what we paid on deal.com.sg (minus the drinks). Would definitely drop by again for some quality yet pocket friendly steaks! Yet another outlet to add on to our likes of Astons, Botak Jones and Char Grill!
