Now, I've always been intrigued by this interesting concept of a fast FRUIT restaurant at Star Vista. Frunatic takes up a large space with inner air-con seating and quite a huge outside seating area. I like the predominantly white decoration with the splashes of bright color from their signage, much like fruity colors. It's a nice place to hang out too, as there's ample space and a cool breeze wafting through. I must say the owners are rather daring to invest in such a large space - they must either be loaded or really confident of the concept they are offering!

I've tried getting my friends to accompany me to try out this place but they balked at the prices shown on the menu, (I think $7 and upwards) especially since it felt like paying a premium price for only fruits, which they are not going to eat solely for lunch. Well, it seems a huge variety of premium fruits are really offered and of course these ain't cheap to get in Singapore. Unfortunately, it's hard to convince us poor folks (I don't have many rich friends) to fork out such an amount for a fruit lunch.

Thankfully, I spotted a recent promotion which offers a choice of either olive zucchini lasagna or spaghetti meatball with an alkaline infused drink for $9.90 instead of the usual $13.90. Now, this has some semblance of a meal, so I finally managed to convince someone to try it with me. Yeah!

By the way, it's all raw, vegetarian food with no flour as well, so do not expect the usual lasagna or spaghetti/meatball.
If I'm not mistaken, it should be mostly vegan food offered. Well, I'm generally a healthy-eating kind of person so I was all game to try my first vegan meal here.

The spaghetti meatball was sold out, so I had the olive zucchini lasagna with a glass of rose infused alkaline water.

We had to wait a while since our order was made fresh, but that's a good start. I was a bit disappointed though when my olive zucchini lasagna arrived. It looked bigger and nicer for their promo picture. I was kinda worried if it was actually enough for me (definitely not enough for my male friend). I've not tasted raw zucchini slices before, but I think it was alright, a bit like a dryer version of a large raw cucumber slice. These slices pose as the "lasagna pasta layers". I felt that there was too much salt sprinkled on the top of the slices, although it was Himalayan salt that was used. Olive oil and some herbs were drizzled onto the slices too. Within the slices, there were dehydrated mushrooms, basil leaves, and sun dried tomatoes akin to the tomato-based pasta sauce we get in regular lasagnas. What looked like cheese inside was actually made from crushed pine nuts and macadamia which tasted pretty good. Only gripe is that due to the sun dried tomatoes, which are usually strong in taste, the lasagna tasted too salty overall. Other than that, the ingredients used were fresh and generally the dish itself is ok for a first-timer like me. After I finished my meal, I felt like I was 60-70% full, which is actually fine if you are on a diet.

The rose-infused alkaline water purportedly helps vital energy regulation, improves blood circulation, promotes clearer skin and improves bladder function. I did not like the rose flavor actually. My companion says it reminded him of soft soap. Perhaps I should try another flavor another time. Since the drink is supposedly good for me, I did manage to finish it albeit with some difficulty. Am I just not used to the drink? Hmmmm....

Well, if you are into healthy eating, I guess you can give this place a try. Personally, I might try their spaghetti meatball on another visit and choice of another alkaline infused water when I wanna go for another healthy meal. Or perhaps their fruit entrees.

For my bowl of you mian, the soup base was quite tasty although funnily it had a bit of ginger taste to it. And true enough, I discovered a sliver of ginger in my soup. Perhaps it dropped in accidentally since they also sell fish soup? Ginger aside, generally the bowl of you mian was alright and above-average in taste. A possible choice if you are in the food court here and just wants a simple, healthy meal.

I have not tried the original "Bishan's best curry chicken" as advertised at this stall before. However, since there's an ongoing promotion - $5.50 (original price $5.90) for the set, I decided to give it a try. Well, the taste is rather homely but then it's kinda one-dimensional, with no special taste to it. The chicken given was quite a large serving, but the meat is rather "old", though it has been cooked till it comes off the bones easily...but still, the meat texture itself is dry. So, will not actually recommend the curry chicken here, even though interestingly enough business here seems pretty good.

Ordinary Lor Mee OK Jun 13, 2013

This stall is newly opened at the YT coffeeshop so I decided to order something to try. I was more in the mood for Lor Mee today instead of minced pork noodles, so I tried a bowl which was still cheap at $2.50. It wasn't too bad, at least for the price and the uncle was friendly too. If you are not too finicky for your lor mee, this is still alright. However, the Lor Mee at the nearby Telok Blangah market tastes much better although that's at $3.

For our gathering of around 8 people, we tried going earlier (first one arrived at 6.30 pm) since fish & co. does not accept reservations after 6 pm. Well, luckily we had the table early because the place was filled up by 7 pm. Since we were here for a birthday celebration, we thought of signing up for their privilege card ($50) as on their promotional flyer, you can get $80 fish points available immediately to offset the bill which seemed like a great deal. Plus, there's an offer for the birthday month for the cardholder. However, when we approached the manager to find out more, he told us that they were out of cards which means he cannot issue as one straightaway. Also, he says that even if we got the card today, we cannot use it to offset our current bill!! He says its the fault of the management for not stating the conditions properly. Now, I don't know who is at fault here, but definitely this does not work out well for fish & Co. as it only made us think that they were not sincere at all in getting customers to sign up for their privilege card.

Staff was short on that day (guess we should have seen it coming, there's a sign outside the restaurant indicating immediate vacancies for staff) and it was really hard to get any attention from the wait staff (who seemed quite flustered and new at their job). When we requested for a candle to be put onto our cake slices, we were a bit flabbergasted that they did not light the candle...we had to spend quite a while trying to get the staff's attention again.....
Well, to give her the benefit of the doubt, she thought we wanted the manager and her to sing the birthday song and she will light the candle then. Anyway, we declined her kind offer and we sang our birthday song ourselves discreetly (we are kinda too old for over-the-top birthday songs)

Ok, enough griping over the service and let's focus on the food.

The classic fish and chips is still the best. Standard has remained all through these years. Can't really go wrong with their signature dish.

- Classic fish and chips

However, standard for the seafood platter seemed to have dropped. The prawns and mussels were quite fresh and good but the rice beneath was too hard. It was made more palatable only if we ate it with the butter sauce that came with the mussels. The grilled calamari did not taste as nice as I recalled...the fish was also just ordinary, nothing special.

- Seafood platter for 2

The chocolate layer mousse cake looked good but was not actually nice at all. Kind of a let-down for a chocolate cake. Think the caramel taste in it overpowers the chocolate.

- Chocolate layer mousse

The hot fudge chocolate cake fared better. The cake was moist, which went well with the hot fudge and vanilla ice cream.

- Hot fudge chocolate cake

Well, I will not say that I will not come back again, but next time I'll just stick with their classic fish & chips.
