Ordinary kuay chap OK Apr 17, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre

I ordered the $2.50 set of kway chap which does not come with the kway (50 cents). I requested for no pork belly meat and also requested a top-up of braised egg (additional 70 cents). Hmm, I thought my meal came up to be a bit pricey for a hawker kuay chap meal.

The kway came in a murky-colored soup which thankfully did not taste as bad as it looks. The big intestines were ok in taste but still had a hint of pungent smell to it. The preserved vegetables were rather nice. I liked the tofu as it tasted fresh and you could still taste the soya beans. But perhaps for kway chap fans, they might find it is not braised long enough - the color was too light. The egg was braised well though.

Generally, my set was normal, nothing special. Probably a one-time visit then for this stall.

It has been a long while since I've stepped foot into Yee Cheong Yuen. From a bigger coffeeshop outlet, it has now reduced in size but with a newly renovated restaurant-like setting, perhaps to become a bit more up-market.

- The arty display of noodles strainers on the wall

- Funky new furniture

Besides the usual ipoh hor fun, the menu has expanded to include quite a few others as well. Me and my dining companion decided to try their new dine-in set menu for 2 pax ($21++).

You can have 2 choices of either chicken/char siew/roast pork, hor fun/noodles/rice, oyster sauce kai lan, dumpling soup & 2 glasses of Luo Han Guo drinks.

Oh boy, we were astonished by the amount of food served. This can definitely fill the stomachs of 2 hungry growing adolescent boys or large eaters and perhaps among 4 ladies. We definitely ate more than we usually do and still cannot finish all the hor fun and the kai lan.

For the dumpling soup, there were 5 pieces within. However, I notice that there seemed to be only minced pork within and no shrimp. They tasted ok in general.

- Dumpling soup

For chicken, you can have a choice of roasted/white/soya sauce (the one we opted for) chicken. The skin was nicely marinated with soya sauce but the meat within could be more tender. As for the char siew, they were rather thick cuts of lean meat which tasted alright.

- Soya sauce chicken & char siew

The really huge plate of kai lan scared us. But the kai lan was of a good quality.

- Oyster sauce kai lan

Again another generous serving of smooth hor fun drenched in lots of gravy which was not salty.

- An individual serving of hor fun

All-in-all, quite a good value is offered for their set meals and the food offered is not bad. Worth a visit if you like to have your ipoh hor fun in a restaurant.

Just regular Ramen OK Apr 04, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Ramen

I am a fan of Ramen and has very high expectations of it. So far, only Santouka & Nansuttei has emerged tops among all the numerous outlets I have tried - perhaps my choice will give ramen fans an idea of the type of ramen I like lol

I have noticed that RamenPlay has a 50% off ramen mid-week deal for this month. This presented a really good opportunity for me to taste the ramen offered here. tongue I already anticipated that there will be many others who will be here for the deal, so I managed to arrive there quite early at 6.20 pm and got a seat only after a 5 mins wait. Subsequently, the queue was really long man!

Me and hubby ordered both the Cha Shu Tonkotsu Ramen & the Cha Shu Double Soup Ramen (both items on offer today).
The egg was nice & runny - good! As for the noodles, they are the slightly thicker yellow type. Noodle texture was quite springy, not bad. For the broth, I much preferred the Tonkotsu one. I do not understand why they mixed the shoyu & tonkotsu to give a double soup broth - in my opinion, it's better to stick to either one, not here not there only made it worse. Still, perhaps there are others who will like that mixed version??

I find the tonkotsu soup base to be lacking in oomph. I like a really intense, flavorful soup base, so this is actually kinda dilute for my taste. On the other hand, if you are the type who finds ramen to be too salty, then this might be more suitable for you.

5 generous slices of pork were given per bowl of ramen. However, they seem to have just been boiled, there's hardly any marinade or grilling done to the pork - which was not what I expected as pictured on their menus. Perhaps they had no time to prepare the pork in time for the large crowd?

- The decor within

- Cha Shu Tonkotsu Ramen

- Cha Shu Double Soup Ramen

Service at the outlet was prompt. The manager was calm even though there was a huge crowd waiting. He was also efficient and provided good service.

Personally, I think the ramen is worth a try only for the halved price ($6.40++). Given the normal price, there are plenty of other better choices that I could have.

Lor mee is the better choice here OK Apr 04, 2013

- The stallfront

- Lor Mee

I remember trying the bak chor mee from this place quite a long while before and I did like it. However, I decided to try their lor mee today as I have seen quite a few customers ordering that. For $2.50, you get a rather generous portion of noodles. The gravy is quite tasty and the ingredients - ngoh hiang, braised pork belly, crispy fried wanton skin were not bad as well. Freshly chopped garlic & black vinegar are available as optional toppings to your bowl. Luckily the lor mee here fares better than my previous bad experience with their bak chor mee. lol

Just a regular zi-char stall OK Apr 04, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Food Court | Zi Char

For non-MOE staff, most items are charged at 50 cents more. Still, at $3.50 for a plate of seafood sheng mee, it's still an acceptable price. I stood behind another customer, on the left side of the stall, waiting to place my order. However, my suspicion was aroused when I saw someone "cutting" my queue and ordering before me. Poor me then saw the sign on the right side of the stall, indicating to "order" there first. * Face palm * I had to wait about 10-15 mins subsequently for my order.

The sheng mee was alright, the sauce was not strongly flavored, so it feels a bit "healthier". Ingredients seemed fresh enough. And oh yah, chicken was used as the meat (instead of the usual pork) here. So, this is just a normal-tasting dish, nothing to shout about though.
