The best Lor Mee! Smile Sep 19, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Hawker Centre | Noodles

I was introduced to this stall by my hubby who swears by the Lor Mee here. Indeed, it's the best I have tried so far. By the way, there are three lor mee stalls at this food centre - I'll try the other 2 out soon and see who wins the battle of the lor mee in the end huh? LOL

Lor Mee - $3

What stands out for the lor mee dish here is the very special sauce. Instead of the usual uniformly black thick sauce we get elsewhere, the sauce here is interestingly speckled with some brown bits (some special ingredient or herb I gather) in addition to the bits of egg within. The resulting sauce is very unique and tasty. Working through the dish, I also bit into bits of fried fish that looks a bit like those used for salted fish, but the fish bits here were not salty. Perhaps that's one of their secret item. The other ingredients like ngoh hiang and fish cake given were generous. The egg was also well-braised. A note of warning: Their potent addition of chilli padi on top of the sambal chili given is really very fiery. So if you cannot take spiciness well, remember to at least remove the chilli padi from your dish first. Else, enjoy the hot shiokness!
5/5 for the taste of the lor mee!

Since this stall sells zha jiang mian as well, we ordered it to try too. Hmmm, I'll say just stick to the lor mee. The zha jiang mian here is pretty normal, nothing spectacular.

Zha Jiang Mian - $3

Char Siew Roasted Pork Rice - $4

There is usually a long queue at this stall during lunch time. Today, I managed to reach this place for early dinner so I did not have to wait for my meal. The roasted meat here is one of the best I have tried so far. The roasted pork is especially good. The skin is crackling crispy and the meat oh-so-tender. The char siew also has a good mix of fatty and lean parts. It was well-marinated without being too sweet or overwhelming in taste. Thus, you can truly savour the tender char siew meat. Highly recommended!

Tomato banana milkshake OK Sep 19, 2013

- Tomato banana milkshake ($2)

Saw an interesting tomato banana milkshake here and thus ordered one to try. The owner used one whole fresh tomato and one banana to blend together with ice to produce the final ice-blended milkshake. Only a splash of UHT milk was added to the drink, which is a pity because more would have made the drink nicer. The owner did not add any added syrup to the drink, so whatever taste comes straight from the tomato & banana itself. Perhaps the banana used was not sweet, so the drink tasted more of tomato than banana. Oh well, for $2 I guess it's still an ok drink if you like your drink to be light-tasting.

Decent claypot tofu OK Sep 19, 2013

Claypot tofu ($4), bowl of rice for $0.50

This stall sells quite a few zi-char type of dishes served in claypots. I ordered the claypot tofu to try. The sauce was rather tasty without being too salty. There was a wide variety of vegetables within, e.g. broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, onion, french pea, chinese cabbage and celery. There were only 3 pieces of egg tofu, although there was one prawn (slightly over-cooked) and some pork slices as well. Generally a decent enough comfort dish.

Not worth a try Cry Sep 19, 2013

Fried sotong mee - $3

Ordered the hokkien mee (or sotong mee as it's called at this stall) and char kway teow to try.

The sotong mee looked quite terrible when it arrived. The egg in the sauce was cooked till it was all over the place in "little bits". Hard to explain, but you could take a closer look at the photo above. Besides egg, I could not taste any seafood sweetness in the sauce. Chilli was a bit too sweet and slightly sourish too. Definitely below normal expectations for a plate of hokkien mee.

The char kway teow did not fare any better. The noodles arrived limp and rather watery without enough black sauce taste to it.

Seems the chef here does not cook very well...I'll advise people not to try this stall at all.
