Ordinary bak kut teh OK Sep 06, 2013
Categories : Bak Kut Teh

Came here with my friends (4 of us in total) to try out this new bak kut teh stall.

The ginger sesame chicken was surprisingly good. It's tasty and has a very home-cooked feel to it. It's a tad oily though. But this dish fares better than the other 2 bak kut dishes we tried.

Ginger sesame chicken - $5.80

The bak kut teh here was not too bad but it's nothing spectacular. You can ask for a top-up of the soup which is herbal in taste. The bak kut was tender enough and the tau kee was ok too. Still alright if you are not setting your standards too high.

Small bowl of bak kut teh - $5.80

For the dry bak kut teh, it was cooked with slices of dried cuttlefish and lady fingers. Also not bad in taste but I've had a better version at other places before. The dish is ok if you are a fan of cuttlefish. Otherwise, it might lend a slightly "fishy" taste to the bak kut.

Dry bak kut teh - $6.80

The salted vegetables and braised peanuts were also alright in taste. But again, nothing too special.

Salted vegetables ($1.80) and braised peanuts ($1)

We tried to order the honey lemon jelly but unfortunately it was sold out already.

Well, generally the bak kut teh here is not bad but I probably will not come back again because I've tried better places elsewhere.

Decent yong tau foo Smile Sep 06, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Hawker Centre

I wanted a healthy meal for lunch today, so I tried this yong tau foo stall here. There is a minimum order of 7 items while other places usually dictate 6 pieces. The items are also charged at 50 cents per piece, same as food court places and not cheaper, which I had expected for a food stall in a market. Thankfully, the yong tau foo here is pretty decent. The pieces are fresh and the soup base quite tasty as well. They also have boiled soy beans at the side for you to add to your dish.

Yong Tau Foo with seven pieces of items, no noodles - $3.50

The best pancakes! Smile Sep 06, 2013
Categories : Bakery

Now, this is the absolutely the best pancake I have ever tasted. The pancake is very crispy and fragrant. I highly recommend the cheese pancake ($1.60). The cheese just oozes out and is very nice! You really gotta try it for yourself. And the pancake is best eaten hot and fresh on the spot. On a previous occasion, I have packed it back for my family to try and it still stayed quite crispy half an hour after that. The uncle will painstakingly separate each pancake with a waxed paper parchment. This stall is very popular and you really have to wait quite long due to the queue. Some advice if you are here for lunch - Order the pancake first thing before you order your main lunch dish. So by the time you have finished your main, the pancake will be ready by then as your after meal snack. smile From some of the articles pasted at the stall, I think the owner has been selling at this place for a long time already. So he's a pro at making the pancakes hehe.

Char siew noodles ok OK Sep 06, 2013
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Coffeeshop | Roasted Meat

Rong Kee specialises in roasted meats, so I decided to try their char siew wanton noodles today. For $3, the amount of char siew given was generous. The meat was tender and well-caramelized, with a mix of fat within. The noodles were cooked till springy and the sauce flavoring was quite ok as well. Actually, I will rather they do not give any wanton and just focus on the char siew. The wantons were pitifully small and had almost no meat. Instead of adding a plus to the meal, it actually brings down the overall taste. Hmmm when I had my meal today, there was only this stall and another economic rice stall open in the whole coffeeshop. I believe that once again, it might be renovation time for the coffee shop and getting in of another round of tenants.

I love the curry puffs at Old Chang Kee. This stall at the holland village mrt underpass area offers a seat-in area where you can order some meals and drinks as well. Well, since they specialize in curry puffs, I reckon that their chicken curry shouldn't be that bad right? So I made a safe choice and ordered their chicken curry set with buns.

3 freshly fried man tous (buns) were given with some achar which all tasted good. The chicken curry was tasty and the amount of chicken given rather plentiful. I especially loved the potatoes which were cooked till very soft with the curry taste permeating through. I also like that it is stated at the stall that they do not use coconut milk and that they use fresh chicken. The environmentalist in me would have preferred that they do not use disposables but I guess that might be due to convenience. A "heaty" meal but worth it if you're a fan of curry chicken smile
