This place is quite small and can only seat a few customers. However, it is prettily decorated in baby blue and pink with peranakan-like motifs. I've noticed this place for a while and thus wanted to give it a try. Me and my dining companion ordered the executive set lunch A ($14.50++) each, and topped up $2++ for a drink too.
The place looked understaffed when we arrived at around 12.15 pm. There was only one chef inside who also had to take orders. We waited a while before a second staff who just came in (she looked as if she's just starting her shift) took our order. We wanted to order their special stew and was disappointed to be informed that they have ran out of the item. Isn't it a bit early? Anyway, we then tried to order the babi pongteh and was told it was not available too, for the day! In the end, we settled for the satay bohong and the nyonya tau yu bak instead. My companion had limited choices since he does not take much spicy food.
- Satay Bohong with sayor lodeh and mango kerabu salad
I think the use of satay is misleading, as the marinade for the pork slices did not taste satay-like at all. It was a midly spicy marinade which was not too bad in taste. The vegetables in the sayor lodeh were too tough, especially the cabbage which was not cooked long enough. The mango kerabu salad was also very sour. I tried my best to eat off most of it, but my dining companion could not take more than one bite of it.
- Nyonya Tau Yu Bak with nyonya chap chye and mango kerabu salad
My companion's set came wrongly with sayor lodeh initially, but was changed to the correct chap chye when I pointed it out to the staff. The nyonya tau yu bak and the chap chye tasted ordinary and were more like chinese dishes than nyonya dishes.
- Pulot Hitam with dried longans (our dessert)
The pulot hitam fared better. However, I feel that dried longans do not need to be added into this dessert, as they were too sweet.
The lemon grass drinks were also dilute and not very nice too.
Overall, I'm kinda disappointed with the food offered here. Perhaps ordering from their ala carte dishes will be a better choice?
