A good halal zichar place Smile Nov 10, 2013

Categories : Zi Char

My hubby highly recommended this place to me, as he had tried it with his colleagues for lunch before and everyone loved the food. Since we were in the vicinity, he brought me here. We were lucky to get a seat straight away, for right after us, the restaurant was filled up very quickly.

- Assam fish head, $16

The assam fish head is the best I've eaten so far. The assam curry was very appetising and tasty, so we ended up ordering some fried buns to mop up the remaining curry after we finished our rice. The fish head was also very fresh and a large portion was given. There was also plenty of vegetables too.

- Sambal kang kong, $6

The sambal kang kong does not look impressive, but it tasted really good too!

- Fried buns, $2

We enjoyed our zi char meal here and will love to be back for more next time. lol

Wholesome soup  Smile Nov 10, 2013

- Ginseng chicken soup, $6.50

- The sachet of herbal ingredients

Heard from my friend that this stall is quite famous and popular, so here I am to try it out. The soup comes in an earthen jar and one whole chicken thigh is given within, which is cooked till tender. The soup is pretty tasty, although there's not too much of a ginseng taste to it. Actually, I prefer my ingredients to float around in the soup so I can pick out whatever I like to eat. In this case, you can still tear apart the sachet to get to the ingredients. The flavoured rice (80 cents) had bits of mushroom and shrimp within and was quite fragrant. You can order side dishes like vegetables to complement your meal too.

Ordinary Peranakan food OK Nov 10, 2013
Categories : Peranakan / Nonya

This place is quite small and can only seat a few customers. However, it is prettily decorated in baby blue and pink with peranakan-like motifs. I've noticed this place for a while and thus wanted to give it a try. Me and my dining companion ordered the executive set lunch A ($14.50++) each, and topped up $2++ for a drink too.

The place looked understaffed when we arrived at around 12.15 pm. There was only one chef inside who also had to take orders. We waited a while before a second staff who just came in (she looked as if she's just starting her shift) took our order. We wanted to order their special stew and was disappointed to be informed that they have ran out of the item. Isn't it a bit early? Anyway, we then tried to order the babi pongteh and was told it was not available too, for the day! In the end, we settled for the satay bohong and the nyonya tau yu bak instead. My companion had limited choices since he does not take much spicy food.

- Satay Bohong with sayor lodeh and mango kerabu salad

I think the use of satay is misleading, as the marinade for the pork slices did not taste satay-like at all. It was a midly spicy marinade which was not too bad in taste. The vegetables in the sayor lodeh were too tough, especially the cabbage which was not cooked long enough. The mango kerabu salad was also very sour. I tried my best to eat off most of it, but my dining companion could not take more than one bite of it.

- Nyonya Tau Yu Bak with nyonya chap chye and mango kerabu salad

My companion's set came wrongly with sayor lodeh initially, but was changed to the correct chap chye when I pointed it out to the staff. The nyonya tau yu bak and the chap chye tasted ordinary and were more like chinese dishes than nyonya dishes.

- Pulot Hitam with dried longans (our dessert)

The pulot hitam fared better. However, I feel that dried longans do not need to be added into this dessert, as they were too sweet.

The lemon grass drinks were also dilute and not very nice too.

Overall, I'm kinda disappointed with the food offered here. Perhaps ordering from their ala carte dishes will be a better choice?

- The stallfront

- Interesting old-school design at the food collection counter within

You can order your food at a touch-screen panel in front of the stall, which is pretty interesting. The counter staff was friendly and helpful in explaining the options available and suggesting to us which food to order when we seemed unsure of our decisions.

- Curry chicken set and the dry curry chicken set

We did not really like the packaging that the food came in, as it felt too much like takeaway, microwaved food even though we were dining in. Perhaps it's more suitable if you pack it back to eat in your office.
The normal curry chicken was delicious, the chicken pieces were tender and the curry gravy very tasty. However, it was hard to scoop the curry out from the bowl as it was very deep and we were given a plastic long spoon (not the soup spoon kind).

The dry curry chicken was tasty as well and much easier to eat from the bowl. The chicken pieces were tender and small pieces of potato were mixed in.

The lime juice and hot tea were all too sweet though.

Pretty good seafood hot pot here Smile Nov 10, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

- Yosenabe (seafood & vegetable hot pot), $12.80

Since I do not eat uncooked food, i.e. sashimi etc, I ordered the seafood & vegetable hot pot. I was disappointed at the blackish-looking pot it was served in. Thankfully, the food within was at least good. There was plenty of fresh seafood within - salmon belly, scallops, squid, prawns, together with glass noodles, enoki mushrooms and other vegetables in a tasty miso base soup. A healthy, satisfying meal smile
