Tasty Mee Soto Smile Sep 02, 2013
Categories : Malay | Hawker Centre

After visiting Teban Gardens Food Centre for a number of times and learned about Wasimon's Stall queue were mainly on Nasi Ayam Goreng and Mee Soto, I decided to give it a try.

Requested for a bowl of Mee Soto with begedil but begedil wasnt available so I have to stick to the bowl of soupy mee soto without any add ons. The lady was rather friendly, letting a smile as she responded to me on the unavailability of begedil.

With abundance amount of ingredients, the shredded chicken which was on top of the yellow mee had formed a hill on my bowl garnished with fried and green spring onions. I would say for the price that I'm paying its definitely worth the money!

Bean Curd Tarts & Pineapple Tarts Smile Sep 01, 2013

LE Cafe is one of Singapore oldest and finest pastry and cakes shop. Products were 100% handcrafted and they have their reputation built throughout the years with their quality and tasty delights.

"LE" is actually referring to the initial of the shop name, "Li Eng". I came to know of LE Cafe when my senior introduced its Beancurd Tart to us about 10 years ago. Ever since I had the tart, it was deeply imprinted into my mind as it was unique on its own and till now, I have not seen a place that is selling similar item.Let's go! I'm all for its Bean Curd Tart.

As we were approaching LE Cafe Confectionery, we get to feel the difference. The shop has been aggressively plastered up by prints of the media and their pastries illustrations everywhere leaving a small walkway about 5 meters into the shop only and that's all ( You cant move left and right to do selections like in a pastry shop). A few customers in the shop will eventually make the shop seems overcrowded and chock up the queue.

Their business was more of "you tell me what you want, I take for you" as everything was kept in within the reach of their helpers only.

We was given a name card and was told that pastries are sold out daily, it will be better to give them a call before coming down. (I remember them saying the same thing when I was walked in customers the last round ). Finally grab a box of beancurd tart, so happy about it! Every tart was well seated on the transparent plastic mold in the box neatly and self assure the safety of the tarts as they will not be knocking onto each other during handling. The smooth and silky beancurd make up of soya bean filling is the cream of the crop and encased by a thin crispy layer of delicious pastry.
Cost: S$8.00 (Box of 8)

It was the first time I tried its round pineapple tarts aka "golf-ball tarts" and indeed they were all in the size of golf ball. Every tart was well polished with egg yolk and baked into golden perfection. The balls are incredibly big and on an average, it costs about 90 cents. Not only are they big and tasty, the thin layer of crust was soft, flaky and packed with full load of butter fragrance. Yums! Bite into them and you will realize how generous LE Cafe Confectionery is with their pineapple jam fillings. These extremely addictive jam are full of moisture, rich with pineapple flavours. On top of that, these outrageous portion of pineapple jam was neither starchy nor gluely. Considering the thin crust layer ratio to the copious amount of pineapple jam, it is definitely rewarding and satisfying in enjoying such traditional Pastry!
Cost: S$8.70 (Box of 10)

Fatboy's mix-and-match  Smile Sep 01, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant | Burgers and Sandwiches

There were still ample of empty spaces left in our stomach after enjoying the petite portions of french cuisine nearby as our dinner in Far East Plaza and we decided to walk around for some bites. We chanced upon the burger bar which looked rather interesting and paused for a moment. The outlook of the bar looks funky looking with some cute characters drew on the wall. It's checkered tilings was blended well into its theme color, black and white. Shop area was not very big and can only accommodate up to 12 pax which includes 2 4-seaters table and 4 other seat by the side of the wall.

The idea of making my own burger had never come across my mind especially in Singapore where fast food are so easily available, prepacked and standardize. What most amazed me was that they had actually created an application on Ipad (available on 2 sets of ipad at the burger bar), suggesting customers to "build" their own burgers there. Implementing the use of the shopping cart experience system, its indeed very convenient and familiar to someone who had done online shopping before. Process of customizing burger was systematic, from choosing the type of bun, meat patty to even sauces add on just with a few triggers of the radio buttons. Sophisticated! When you are done with your choice, just click on "check out" and proceed to the cashier (And yes! At least there are still human touch)

A fridge was placed next to the counter, out of convenience, we grabbed a jar of Tiramisu. As seen from the picture above, the fridge was covered with a shade/screen, it was rather a good idea as it maintains the chillness, keeps the cool air within the system and not affecting the one who is sitting in front of it.

Bundled and tied up in a glass jar, Tiramisu Hero was real good, much more than I had expected.

It had an acceptable amount of alcohol content followed by a well controlled wetness level. The sweetness strikes a perfect balance between the pillow soft Tiramisu layers and the liquor. Yums!

Too bad that one cant customized Tiramisu through the ipad. Not to disappoint, customizations can be done through the Tiramisu Hero Website. smile

We did not have anything fanciful and had just only built the basic of a burger, bun, meat, vegetables (pickles, lettuce, tomatoes) and sauce at no additional cost but it's all satisfiable enough.

Come to think about it, it is less often we get to find pork patty available in burgers outlet and this is such a rare find!

Given an option of mix-and-match burger, it definitely attracts food pedant who are consciously aware their food intakes and those who likes to make their own burger. Having seen and tasted its quality, I would say that pricing is very comfortable, moreover the portions are "fat". This place is highly recommendable for its quality, price and portion!

Peanut Soup Smile Aug 18, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre | Chinese Soup

Peanuts soup is one of the items in the "MUST EAT" list and just nice that I chanced upon the stall "75 Peanut Soup" when I was in Maxwell Food Centre. Occupying the unit 57, they have an interesting stall name "75 Peanut Soup" followed by a "57" wording behind the shop name which make it reads as "7 Peanut Soup 57", sounds rhyme.
Stall and Queue

The stall is only specialized in 3 kinds of soup, Tau Suan (Split Beans), Red Beans and Peanut Soup. Fried fritters are available for Tau Suan and if you opt to add in rice balls for the peanut soup, it will be included as well.

I had my peanut soup finally and was happy about it as this is not easily available in most Singapore Hawkers. The milky color soup when scooped consists of peanuts boiled to a soften texture, together in the light tasty soup with peanut fragrance it brings back those memories of my childhood days.

Cost: S$1.00 (For Dine In, take away additional S$0.20 for the plastic container)

Holiday Breakfast Smile Aug 09, 2013
Categories : Coffeeshop

What could have turn a public holiday into such an enjoyable one? My answer will be just a meal down Casuarina road but of course not the Casurina Curry as it was overly crowded. A marvelous breakfast choice made even though it was quite a heavy meal and sacrificing the sleep hours in such a cooling weather especially during a rainy day but they are all well paid off.

Looking at its fruits drink on the menu, there were a handful of interesting drinks we can choose from and we had shortlisted the Bitter gourd with honey (Left) as well as the HK Style Yam Ice (Right). Bitter gourd drink tasted bitter in nature however taste was still bearable with the honey sweetening the entire drink while the Yam Ice was filled with yam's fragrance and coconut's milk, tasted close to a bowl of Bo Bo Cha Cha. Nice!

Kway Teow was clustered , sticking back to back and seemed hard to separate but it's just the small matter as they used lesser oil, making the plate non greasy. I had it well mixed with the sauce and taste wasn't that bad afterall. Most importantly, the chicken meat sweetness tastes special and uncommon from the usual shredded chicken I had. It was smooth, tender and juicy, well done! Vegetables via the sides were not the usual Xiao Bai Cai and what was given tasted crunchy.

Salute to this plate of Hong Kong Style Wan Tan Mee, even its soup tastes very rich with prawns flavours. Yellow Mee is absolute different from our usual thin yellow noodle and it gives hints of prawns flavour too in every strand of them. Mee was Q and springy doused in the light soy sauce and with big dumplings placed on top of them. Dumplings looks appetizing especially in its plump and crumpled looking translucent skin.

If you have tried Victor's Kitchen Carrot Cake, this is pretty similar. The "cha wan mushi" look-alike dish was actually its carrot cake. When seen from far, I thought they are selling some pudding. The softness cum its springy texture had blown me away. Dont worry, you definitely get to taste the bits of carrot in your cake. It was simply more than heaven! I will highly recommend this!

Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun is one of best sellers of Chef Chair Lao Ban. Not only that it is freshly made on the spot but also of its soft and thin skin that encase the ingredients properly. They were divided into smaller pieces with each of them doused with sweet soy sauce, sprinkled with cut spring onions and sesame seeds.

Chicken Shredded Porridge was a bonus to our breakfast (we are almost full) as we did not want to waste a trip down not trying its "Must-Try" dishes. Famous for its bowl size, we had ordered one bowl to try out. Fell in love with the softness and the mini cut fried fritters that comes with it. Those who don't enjoy roasted peanuts in the porridge will find it disturbing to consume when you have to bite the hard crust of them with the spoonful of congee. Shredded Chicken meat was exactly the same as the Kway Teow we had, and perfect!

The drink and noodle stall will sum up the business nature of Chef Chair Lao Ban's. The place is brightly lited with table and chairs well organized inside and out of the shop.
Inside the Shop

Inside the Shop

They had only a row of tables available for dining due to limitations of the pathway outside its shop.

Usually the shops' van will be parked in front of their stall and it's less likely we can get a good parking lot like this.

I find it funny to see the typical Hong Kong Man in his 30s wearing tee shirt and jeans, making his rounds to check if his customers' was served. Bald and carrying a big belly walking about and once in a while you will get to see him pulling his jeans all the way up way above the waist line, looking "different". And while he was walking again, his belly pushed his jeans and adjustment of jeans repeats. tongue. Anyway Chef Chair's service was prompt and better than average standards.

There was no receipt given and total cost of our breakfast (2 pax) is S$25 which we find it pretty reasonable for an Authentic Hong Kong Meal in Singapore.

Notes:
(1) For those who are dining in, just take a seat and servers will come to you while for those who are taking away, they are required to queue in front of the stall.
(2) They are selling Zi Char too but not in the morning.
